It's pretty good for a BD boxset. However, keep in mind that virtually all anime airs on obscure channels/timeslots. Bacano did average (3,389) because it's just not the kind of show that most otaku are going to go crazy for.
Yeah, doing 2,156 for a BD set when your original sales were 3,389/disc is really quite good.

Melancholic, my guess is that the huge success of Durarara!! (which is of course by the same animation studio and same original author) is what influenced a lot of people to go back and take a second look at Baccano even if they didn't pay attention to it initially.
It would be interesting if this prompted a sequel series for Baccano!, especially if they feel they need to wait a bit for the proper time to do a second DRRR!! series.

I have no idea, I still have yet to give it past episode and not sure if I ever will.
So this is going to be one of those series where it took at least a quarter of the series in order to get good, huh?

Well, enough people had to like it to still be watching late in I guess. I dropped after ep 1 though.

There's a site where you can track how unreleased discs are ranking on Amazon Japan, and Suzuku noted this on January 9th:

So maybe ~4 eps ago.

Star Driver has gotten a ton of hype from "sakuga otaku". By that, I mean the people who obsess over individual animators, their trademark styles, the quality and creativity of key frames, etc. Aniplex assembled a star-studded team (week after week at that) to work on this show, and it wasn't too long before the hype spread to more general fans of anime.

I wouldn't say that animation alone can sell a show, but the cult following that emerged definitely propelled this one to new heights.

Just look at how Milky Holmes flew off around the middle of its run. Naturally, the numbers don't compare to Star Drivers, but it was looking to be a total (and expected) bomb until a vocal following gave it visibility. The producers wisely hired some renowned animators too.

Actually, Milky didn't take off until after its last episode, so I don't think that has much to do with it. Likewise, Star Driver didn't start to sale well until like four weeks ago.

I'm considering going back and translating the full lists from 2011 onward (or maybe the end of 2010 onward to catch the early Fall Vol. 1s) though it'll have to happen later in the day. Too much time needed to do so when posting from work. These things come out with really bad timing for me.
I have the lists fully translated from the 12/16 week to now, so I can copy/past them here if you want.

I've been hearing the name of this show and never checked it out but reading that paragraph makes me really really really want to see it. I can't watch a show solely for animation but I can watch a show with a story decent enough to get from one well animated fight/sequence (I've been awe struck by hair flowing) to the next.

Hell, most of the shounen I watch and enjoy fits into this category and all the shounen I dislike is because the animation doesn't get good enough quick enough.

I don't find this obvious, actually. The Railgun manga doesn't sell anywhere close to the levels the novels do. And the novels sell much better than they did before the anime airs.

It would be like if Haruhi-chan sold more than Haruhi (2009). It just doesn't make sense. All I can conclude is there is a large discrepancy between readers and DVD buyers (which makes me wonder how many buy-it-all fans for a franchise there are).
Railgun is a significantly better show than Index. Sidestory or not, its just better done.

It seems the Index/Railgun team is better at expanding material to fit the alloted space than cutting it down.

(also this season of Index is just...not very good, the last two arcs in particular were bordering on being outright bad)
I think the second series of Index has also been adapted less to the tone of the novels than the first, they have cut out a lot of the long speechs about the series' religious history and some of the more incidental character interaction (this was possibly inevitable from being semi-forced into adapting one more novel than they did for the first series) - so whatever anyone's opinion of that, it is a bit of a disconnect. Whereas I think the original content for Railgun was very faithful in tone to the series as a whole.

Oh, hah, I read this just now as I was coming here to post exactly that. Well, thanks for the offer, would have saved me some time if I'd checked first. Well, not that I mind doing it, and at least I have a format down now that I can use going forward. I'll probably work backwards earlier than 12/13~12/20 over time.

Gonna link these in the 2010/2011 indexes as well.
