Well, there's just less OVAs made in general, whatever the reason. Overall it seems like nowadays the 1 cour TV series has taken the place of the ~4-8 episode OVA. I doubt we could really determine if there's a relation to piracy, or whether the TV 1-cour model is just more profitable/easier than the OVA model overall. Regardless, I'm not a fan of OVAs so I'm not lamenting their decrease.

Any sales analysis of OVAs would be pretty hard because I imagine a significant percentage of them do not rank, and didn't in the past either.

I guess, Index is one of the best selling LN series period and Touma dominates LN character polls but if the adaption is "meh" why would you spend so much money when you already have the superior versions that are also so far ahead it's not funny. Railgun considerably amped up one aspect (i'm talking railgun manga to anime here) it had to appeal more to Otakus and that's why it was successful. And Fencedude quality has nothing to do with sales the majority of the time, you should know better. This season in your words sucks compared to the first and yet has a 33% increase in sales, why even bring up quality in this discussion.

Sure, quality isn't a totally accurate predictor of sales, but in a situation like this, its a pretty fair comparison.

I certainly wouldn't use it to compare two shows that weren't fairly closely connected anyway.

Index II sucks compared to season 1 as you said but has an increase in sales of 33% over that season. And Railgun is also more aimed at otaku than Index.. otaku =! quality.

You going to tell me that Durarara is 16k better than Baccano? Fujoshi's =! quality

Lets be reality, we know why those two sold better and quality had nothing to do with it.
