Preliminary list, all to report is that KnK Epilogue DVD is up 2,286 to 21,260. Guessing this will be a slow week.

Was a bit curious about this too. I have not followed the movie, but was it supposed to be a fairly big release? I just noticed the runtime is over 2 hours. 6k is kind of... low sounding.

Well, it's pretty much the next thing from the same team behind R.O.D the TV and Kamichu (did those sell well in Japan?). Not sure how "big" it was supposed to be beyond that.

Wasn't this the movie I heard really mixed reviews on due to pacing and wasted concepts?

ROD TV averaged 6,737 and BD box did 4,894. Kamichu averaged 5,703 and BD box did 5,689. Both fairly solid sellers with very successful BD boxes.

Space Show is in the same range but a movie should be moving more than a TV series given that it's a one shot release and not sales x8 or x9. When I saw the sales I was thinking Space Show was a half hour OVA, not a 136 min movie.

Well, we can add at least one onto the LE count since mine isn't technically bought until iM@S2 comes out next week

In terms of money actually spent on the production of the movie, I'd imagine that Aniplex wanted it to be A Big Deal. It's a pretty darn beautiful movie that must of cost a hell of a lot to produce - I wouldn't be surprised if it was more expensive than any none-Redline movie released last year, anyway. I gather it didn't do particularly good box-office in it's theatrical release either, though.

To be honest, I kind of suspect the problem is that they had absolutely no idea how to position the movie. Too otaku looking for mainstream audiences and too mainsteam-kids movie looking for the otaku audience. To be honest, I kind of wonder if it's got a little too much of Hideyuki Kurata's offbeat sensibility to play well outside the otaku market in Japan, though I suspect it'd play better overseas were it given the opportunity.

2010 was also unusually strong for otaku movies anyway.

Of course, Shoushitsu alone would horribly skew the numbers, much less Nanoha 1st and Itsuwari no Utahime.

God, did I really use "To be honest" twice in the same paragraph? That's a terrible habit that I really need to get out of...

But, yeah, I'm not so sure that the numbers are horribly skewed as such, but last year really wasn't a great time to try and launch an original anime movie with all those fan-market super-properties and a new Ghibli movie. You're going to struggle just to get mental bandwidth, yet alone getting people to see it. It really didn't help that there was an unusually large number of less major movies floating around as well.
