Default [Simulcast] Hanasaku Iroha Episode #3 Review

Review by Greg Smith

Mania Grade: B+

* Released By: Crunchyroll
* Series: Hanasaku Iroha

In Summary:
With this episode, we get an end to the somewhat menacing turn that the conclusion of the previous episode hinted at, but instead of violence or tragedy, things are, as one can now come to expect for this show, played as farce for comedic effect. In addition, it would appear that every episode, we are going to learn a little bit more about Ohana, this episode providing us with a glimpse into a desire that Ohana had that even she was previously unaware of. Overall, the show continues to be entertaining, providing a light-hearted look at the life of a city girl now living and working in a small country inn. Ohana is slowly moving forward.

As you mentioned in your review, there were several parody aspects to this episode.

Another one would be the car chase: which includes the person fleeing stopping at a red light, even though there isn't any traffic, and the pursuers stopping their chase to go shopping for tofu.

It's interesting how I've never actually seen a live-action Japanese television drama, but there have been so many short snippets that have appeared in anime that I know about the cliff-side dramatic ending and a few other common scenes. I'll have to keep in mind the stopping at a traffic light and the pursuers stopping to go shopping cliches for the future.

Yes the cliff side dramatic scene, is a big cliche that as you mentioned has been replicated in many anime shows, but sorry about confusing the issue with the the car chase.

I don't think that stopping at the light or going shopping during a car chase are J-Drama cliches, at least not that I've heard about. I was talking more about parodying car chase scenes in general, by having the author stop at the red light, and them stopping mid chase to go shopping, instead of both vehicles careening through the streets with reckless abandon. Even the choice in vehicles was not really suitable for a car chase.

Although this episode got a little weird with the tie-up of Ohana by the "author", this is still my favorite of the season so far.
