The first Madoka Magica volume accomplished this feat despite a recall that Aniplex announced on its second official day of sales. It sold 22,000 on its first day of sales alone, April 27. It also sold 9,097 DVDs during the April 25-May 1 week.
Hmm, so better than 50% after first day (but not massively more) for ~62k first week. Bu it sounds like the recall (since it was indeed inventory) may have had an effect after all. No good way for us to know how much, though, since the fixed discs wont be available for a month.

Curse you, glitches. I'm much more annoyed by the uncertainty it throws on sales numbers than the glitch itself. =P

Now granted, even though Madoka beat the best first-week BD sales of Bake, Bake sold far far more DVDs than Madoka. And due to its story structure, it did not drop off considerably from beginning to end, whereas Madoka will drop off at least a bit. So unless the recall had a really major effect, Madoka will fall significantly short of Bake's 78k average.

I guess we'll know more when vol 2 comes out. I'm thinking this is fairly complete though.

Oh, and lest I sound like I'm downplaying its success...FUCK YEAH MADOCCHI!

(Heh, Madoka is 70Fractale.)

Just added the DVD >100 numbers.

And... ouch. I wondered what Fractale's DVDs might have added to the lackluster BD total but the answer is... not much. Wasn't in the top 300 for the week... it sold less DVDs than Kuragehime v4. o_O That's as close to "nothing" as you can realistically get.

I was looking at the lifetime volume 1 sales for the top 10 sellers, and it would not be unheard of for Madoka to add a significant amount.

I do expect its sales to be relatively front loaded, but adding another 30~40% would not be out of line

Quote:
First volume, first week sales of anime series:
Evangelion: 30 519 (114 317 total for initial VHS + LD releases)
Gundam Seed Destiny: 57 000 (80 635 total)
Gundam Seed: 30 000 (71 081 total)
Bakemonogatari: 44 885 (82 803 total)
Fullmetal Alchemist: 21 500 (65 000 total)
Macross F: 39 000 (64 000 total)
Code Geass: 36 500 (68 000 total)
K-ON!: 40 949 (53 472 total)
Gundam 00: 22 847 (42 415 total)

Madoka: 62 000
I really don't feel the Evangelion number is particularly useful for anything, since that was such a different period, but the rest are fairly instructive. Will be interesting to see if its more like K-On or more like Bakemono.

Default Re: Novel/manga adaptations and sales

Ultimatemegax did a bit of digging and got some numbers on the Suzumiya Haruhi series of novels and said I could post it here if I wanted. It's interesting to see how a franchise can grow over time, so sure why not?

"I've done some research today on the cumulative sales of the Haruhi series pre/post anime. I'm not sure it would fit in the Anime sales 2011 thread currently, but since you've been interested in the topic I thought you'd like to see the results.

Reporting Date | Amount sold | Volumes | Amount Sold per Volume | Reporting Difference | Difference from 2006

Apr-06 | 1500000 | *7 | 214286
Dec-06 | 2800000 | *8 | 350000 | 87% | *87%
Dec-07 | 4300000 | *9 | 477778 | 54% | 187%
Dec-08 | 5300000 | *9 | 588889 | 23% | 253%
Feb-09 | 5600000 | *9 | 622222 | *6% | 273%
Jan-10 | 6000000 | *9 | 666667 | *7% | 300%
Apr-11 | 7000000 | *9 | 777778 | 17% | 367%
Jun-11 | 8000000 | 11 | 727273 | 14% | 433%

Haruhi was an exception to the general trend, but it's still amazing to see how much it's grown in just over 5 years. We can't base any projections on it for other franchises though."

If anyone is wondering, do please feel free to post this kind of stuff. The relationship between anime and source material sales is definitely relevant to this thread.

Uh fence... Bake was supply constrained.. And every other title you listed was airing in a mainstream timeslot or is very mainstream like macross. Geass and k-on being the exceptions. Also a lot of those Vol 1's were released while the show was airing and hence was able to add buyers during the second half of the show. I would think geass 22-23 not to mention 24-25 got a lot of people to finally dip... Madoka can't do that, it's over, it's the advantage long running series have.

I think k-on is the better example since it is also otaku aimed, the later bake vols did like 70k op week and another 10-12k for lifetime.

K-On still added an additional 20%, which would bring Madoka up into the mid 70s.

And we have the recall and resulting supply constraints to take into account.

I'm not saying its incredibly likely, just that its within reason. The real test will be volume 2, and seeing how much of a dropoff it has, and how often volume 1 continues to chart for BDs.

Now I'm totally considering adding a "#frt" calculation to my source spreadsheet for the 10k+ shows list.

...Which I'd love to update with Madoka in its right place (well, based on v1 wk1 at least...) except the week's numbers still don't seem to be out. Well, can't update it until I get home anyway.

Ouch. No DVD rank for Zombie or Merry. That makes their drop-offs look even more painful, even though Zombie's week 1 is only 27 copies below v1. Merry though... from 2353 first week v1 (distro constrained) to 1658 v2. Painful. And it's unlikely to add anything like the 1.4k v1 added in later weeks. Milky's DVDs fall below the threshold with this volume too.

And holy shit, Hourou beat Fractale! To the great amusement of the 2ch/yaraon posters.

Winter update:
Madoka Magica has arrived! 52,944/9,097 for 62,041. If it were to add a decent portion more and stay very consistent, it could pass Gundam Seed S1 and take 3rd overall since 2000. It's 6.6k behind Gundam Seed Destiny and while I can see v1 very possibly passing that, I don't think it'll maintain it as an average. Unless the recall really did bite into it and 62k is only the beginning... but I doubt it was that much of a factor to be honest.

Hourou Musuko does 1,056 BDs, DVDs don't rank. Hourou is 1.19 Fractale!

KoreZombie v2 doesn't see DVDs ranking. BDs were remarkably consistent though, 2,170 vs the 2,197 v1 did first week. [Edit: DVD estimate, 1100] Edit2: DVDs confirmed at 1,072, so 3,242 total].

Yumekui Merry v2... ;_; No DVD rank, only 1,658 BDs. Brutal. Unlikely to rank in any fashion again, so we won't know what it truly did but that's a nasty drop from the cheaper v1. Bye bye second season. Oh well, I tried. [Edit: DVD estimate, 750]

Freezing v2 starts at 1,782/3,431 for 5,213.

Starry Sky v3 does 3,221.

Dragon Crisis v3 continues its amazing, market-defying volume on volume increases! 625 BDs! Up from 602 the volume before, up from 562 the volume before that. At this rate it could sell almost 700 for v6!

Infinite Stratos is still at it. Five weeks in, adds 631 BDs for 36,132. It's added nearly 6.8k total discs after week 1. With 400 more it can take 12th from FMA '03. But same as Madoka, assuming averages from v1 sales is obviously not going to be accurate.

Fall update:
OreImo v5 starts at 15,556/3,952 for 19,508.

Star Driver v4 brings it down to a first week of 5,411/2,661 for 8,072.

Milky Holmes v4 sees DVD miss the list, so 3,852 BDs it is. [Edit: DVD estimate, 1050] Edit2: DVDs confirmed at 1,044, so 4,896 total].

Otome Youkai Zakuro closes out up slightly to 1,760. Average across all six with 2,200 estimate of v2 brings us to 2,122. Deserves way better...

Hyakka Ryouran v6 is a final volume as well, doing 2,947/1,632 for 4,579. Unless it charts again next week, it has averaged 5,305. 1,900 estimate for DVD v2.

SoraOto F v4 sees a small bump to 2,450/1,335 for 3,785, a couple hundred more than v3 first week.

PantyStocking v5 gets 1,700.

Fortune Arterial v5 does 1,305. [Edit: DVD estimate, 900] Edit2: DVDs confirmed at 891, so 2,196 total].

MM! v5 is used to sub-1k territory... 905 BDs.

Past seasons:
Amagami SS v12, part two of Tsukasa's arc, does 3,460/1,382 for 4,842. The final volume with Risa and Miya does 3,912/1,444 for 5,356. Average is 5,300 right now but at least v13 should rank again.

Kuroshitsuji II v8 does 5,983.

UraBoku v11... still not done. >_> 1,709.

DenYuuDen v7 drops below 1k with 997 BDs.

K-ON!!:
!! Vol 1: 42,433 (12 wk)
!! Vol 2: 39,247 (*9 wk)
!! Vol 3: 38,747 (*7 wk)
!! Vol 4: 38,019 (*5 wk)
!! Vol 5: 40,484 (*5 wk)
!! Vol 6: 36,756 (*5 wk)
!! Vol 7: 35,144 (*6 wk)
!! Vol 8: 36,424 (*6 wk)
!! Vol 9: 39,827 (*5 wk)

- I'll remove the K-ON!! section after the monthly BD list comes out and we have a final number on Vol. 9. Though maybe it's the monthly list after that we'll need, I'd need to check reporting periods. If this is it, though, average is 38,565, at #11 since 2000, right behind Gundam 00 S2.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Senjou no Valkyria BD Box does 665.

Gundam Unicorn v3 tops 10k BDs. 100,873/57,179 after one month for 158,052.

Sadly, Clannad AS box didn't rank again. BD threshold was 564, which is more than it would have done second week. The list says BD Top 100, so why don't we get more than 50? ;_; There are few cases where a couple hundred units matters more than a ¥62k BD box.
