Yeah, their name is new but Studio Gokumi is formed from some of Gonzo's former staff for Strike Witches and Saki.
Its really obviously the same people who did Saki.

Even so, I think seeing how anime ranks without being overshadowed by everything else can be interesting on occasion. Especially given how often we're told Anime is niche even in Japan.
Besides that I'm more interested in anime sales relative to each other since non-anime dvd/bd, outside the occasional J-pop DVD, released in Japan doesn't interest me too much.

I think his point was more that, if you're interested in the relationship between preorder ranking and sales, identifying position within all DVD/BDs is much more helpful.

Or just use ranking stalker to see both anime relative to each other as well as position in the whole DVD/BD list.

Speaking of sold out, T&B didn't come back in stock yet so it stayed sold out the last few days before release. Should be back in stock 6/03, I believe it says. Might see a larger than usual second week.

It's a matter of perspective even if it's slightly skewed, but I understand looking at the bigger picture.

Default 2011 05/16~05/22 Full / Translated list

Note, I'd messed up the dates last week. It was 5/09 to 5/15, not 5/16. I've fixed it for my posts in the subthread.

Slow week, as expect this time of the month. Next week will be huge, though. I wonder if the BD threshold might be so high that Madoka v1 doesn't chart again, though people picking up corrected copies along with v2 could possibly bump it up, I guess.

Winter update:
Madoka Magica v1 adds 835 BDs in its fourth week, though it actually passsed the 70k mark last week with the revised DVD numbers. And the BDs break through 60k. Hmm, is that the first TV anime BD volume to ever sell 60k? [Edit: Wait, that was kind of a dumb question. No TV anime has sold 60k total in the BD era other than Bake, so... yeah, obviously.] Bake never quite got there since its DVD sales were strong and took up a much bigger chunk of sales. Man, talk about being in an incredibly exclusive club. Total stands at 70,838.

Kimi ni Todoke S2 v3 adds 602 to 6,146 DVDs.

Fall update:
SoreMachi v5 starts at 1,572 BDs. [Edit: Looks like about 550 DVDs, so 2,100 or so total.]

Hakuouki S2 v5 is up 1,216 for 11,520 DVDs.

KamiNomi v4 charts a second time, up 264 to 2,627 BDs.

OreImo v5 goes a fourth week, adding 263 BDs for 21,533.

Past seasons:
Nothing really this time, I guess when I start Spring, Fall will become "Past seasons".

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica:
Vol 1: 69,547 -> 70,838 (*4 wk) - Adds 835 BDs.
Vol 2: **,*** (** wk)
Vol 3: **,*** (** wk)
Vol 4: **,*** (** wk)
Vol 5: **,*** (** wk)
Vol 6: **,*** (** wk)

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari BD Box gets 2,078.

Next week, A Channel, T&B, and... oh, right, I need to make a Spring Vol 1 post tonight. That sure crept up on me.

KamiNomi, keep climbing, maybe we'll get a third season. iirc KamiNomi is Manglobes best selling series to date?

And Madoka Magica has finally passed SEED's entirety and is 8k behind Bakemonogatari. Let's hope for very consistent sales from here out.

Mmm, it might be, which would be really, really pathetic if so... At least I can't think of anything they've done that averaged even 3k.

It passed SEED Destiny's average last week but the odds of Madoka staying above 68k average through all six volumes is, hmm, I'd say considerably less than 50%. SEED Destiny did that average over something like 13 volumes while Madoka is only one vol in.

Default Re: Anime Sales in Japan - 2011

This article seems to support your analysis that while hit titles have sold more and more in the past years, the rest of the titles remain stagnant, something.

"The sales of anime has been improved by the spread of Blu-ray, but there has been a larger and larger gap between successful and failed titles due to the careful selection of the consumers."

The trend seems set to continue into this season as well, with AnoHana and AoEx's sales preparing to dwarf A-Channel's sales.

Speaking of which, we haven't posted ratings for noitaminA and Nichigo in a while.

[C]/AnoHana ratings: Ep 4: 2.8%, Ep 5: 2.5%, Ep 6: 2.9%

AoEx ratings: Ep 2: 3.4%, Ep 3: 2.4%, Ep 4: 2.5%, Ep 5: 3.5%

If BD sales are an indication, AnoHana is probably doing a lot to keep the average rating between it and [C] in the mid-upper 2 percentile. I imagine it's doing 3-4% weekly with [C] in the low 2s if not lower. As for AoEx, good to see it doing relatively well in the slot.

Quite often you can buy "used" items and seriously question how much "use" they have seen, but I feel like you would see more examples of rows of same-volume copies if this was the case. Also don't forget that most of these stores (including Book Off) don't deal exclusively in second hand items, and so could have their own stock of "new" items to sell off anyway. I wouldn't be totally shocked if you were right, though.

edit: wow, just noticed the stat in the sub-thread header. Is there any other example of media-consumption on the level of anime with such a concentrated core market?
