Right...at least from what I read from the post, I thought Suzuku thought the side-story game would have done 100k in the first week which is a dream for any 360 developer in Japan. That's what I said that was a really optimistic sale numbers one can expect for a Xbox 360 title in Japan.

So, in reality, with the double pack...the game sold a little over 40k in the first week. Impressive considering the first game did about 16k in it's first week of sales.

It generally only happens with shows with an odd number of episodes. Since Japan will almost never put 3 episodes on a disc for a non-children's show, 13 episode shows become 1/2/2/2/2/2/2. Or for AnoHana, 1/2/2/2/2/2.

Subsequent volumes are still two, it's just that they squeeze the extra volume out of you, albeit at a reduced (but not necessarily 50% off) price.

The main annoyance is that it ends up making shows take a month longer to complete. I'd rather pay more for a final 3 episode disc and get it in 6 rather than 7 months.

I have a question regarding a series which aired in April 2011, the second series of Kaiji (Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji). Does anyone have a clue as to what is happening with this series? I've noticed not one thing, the soundtrack aside, has been solicited for this season. Did the first series go through something similar? I've noticed the first series has a DVD Box as does the other FKMT series'.

Any hints as to what is going on will help.

Producers of Kaiji don't care about disc sales. They rely on ratings and increased book sales, so the discs aren't heavily advertised and come out late. Yes, IIRC something similar happened with Kaiji S1 and Akagi.

Normal top 50 list is out. As expected, Nichijou sold 2.5k BDs.

Shana's blu-ray box set sales have me worried about its waning popularity. I mean, the OVA's sales dropped a lot between vol 1 and 4, but since vol 1 sold 10k I wasn't too concerned and just chopped it up to being that since it's an OVA series a lot of buyers wouldn't keep up with when new vols come out. The DVD box set numbers I just figured were because it was already released in that format so a lot of buyers didn't see any point in buying it, although the fact Index's box set sold so well was strange. The BD numbers are... concerning though. At the popularity Shana was at three years ago it should have sold around DtB's BD box set level. The novel sales have also dropped off a cliff...seems more and more like Shana is a dead series that doesn't have nostalgic appeal. Hopefully the TV series gets things going again...or it could end up selling around 5k per volume.

And it looks like we were right that Madoka volumes would get a boost every time a new volume came out; both vol 1 and 2 added 1k to their total numbers. Kind of funny to see all three Madoka volumes on the same weekly list.

I think the boost in Madoka volume 1 and 2 sales is more likely due to the Nico rebroadcast which was viewed by nearly 1M people http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...n-japan-taiwan. I checked amazon rankings the day after that broadcast and saw a major jump in ranking for all volumes.

The reason I think that's more likely is that when volume 2 came out, volume 1 had a so-so week of 835 BDs, which was lower than the prior week's 1,485. The week after that it spiked up to 2,201. It's possible there was a delayed reaction to volume 2 sales, but more likely the increase was a post-recall bump.

I'm just going to use my existing post and add what was missing.

Spring update:
Ao no Exorcist v1 does 7318/10892 for 18,210. One of the few shows doing more on DVD these days.

Steins v1 does 11,802 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Azazel-san v1 does 5649/2592 for 8,241. Could pass 10k.

Denpa Onna v1 does 5267/1361 for 6,628. Hooray! I wanted it to be a 10k series but that obviously wasn't going to happen.

Hidan v1 does 4007/2349 for 6,356. More than expected.

SketDan v0 does 6,891 DVDs. [Note, this is a super discounted release with a bunch of extras and the first episode.]

Sekai-ichi v1 does 4,574, also DVD only.

Tiger&Bunny v2 does 22685/1071 for 23,756. Already almost as much as v1 has to date including RE. This must be a whole lot closer to meeting first week demand.

A Channel v2 does 3,697/1,312 for 5,009. Nice to get two volumes topping 5k first week.

Nichijou v1 does about what I'd feared, aka 2.5 BDs and 1k DVDs. Turned out to be very close: 2,620/924 for 3,544. We may or may not see the DVDs rank again, since they'll be in busy weeks and it just barely made it this time.

OreTsuba v1 does 1,025 BDs. Ouch. Even Hourou beat that first volume. [Update: Sells about 680 DVDs, total 1,705.]

Lotte v1 only does 1,316 BDs. I still wonder what that oh so brief jump to #16 was about, heh. Even if it was only a few copies it's still uncommon.

Winter update:
Madoka Magica v3 does 51840/8528 for 60,368. A drop of 2k/1 off v2 first week.

Infinite Stratos v3 does 22197/7758 for 29,955.

Zombie v4 does 1947/912 for 2,859.

Starry Sky v5 does 2,855 DVDs.

Merry v4 takes a hit... 1,325 BDs. A drop of 25% off the previous volume. No DVDs of course... it's been doing about 750. [Update: Sells about 555 DVDs, total 1,880.]

Gosick v3 is down to 1,842 BDs and no ranking DVDs.

Mitsudomoe ZRC v4, final volume, does 1,056 BDs. Final average 1,567.

Hourou v3 is down below 1k at 989, boo.

Did not rank in either format:

Past seasons:
SRW Inspector DVD does 921. I'm sure most sales will be with the BD/game bundle.

OreImo v7 does 16731/4108 for 20,839. Only a bump of about 100 each on DVD and BD over week one of vol 6, despite the special eps. Still, that reverses the usual decline and it'll add more next week.

Index II v5 does 11590/4132 for 15,722.

Star Driver v6 does 4892/2283 for 7,175, which knocks it out of the 10k list even if it does the usual ~450 2nd week BDs.

Milky Holmes v6 does 3899/963 for 4,862 for its last volume. Average is 6,007 although it'll go up a little with some more BDs next week.

Kaminomi v4 does 2,493 BDs. No DVD number but its only been about 380 in recent volumes.

Tegami Bachi Reverse v7 does 1,302.

DenYuuDen v9 is at 1,002, still hanging on to 1k barely (though it missed by 3 on v7).


Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica:
Vol 1: 75,182 -> 76,980 (*9 wk) - adds 1007 BDs and DVD v1 adjusted +791 in half year rankings. Pretty huge for a 9th week. Madoka v1 is actually 4k ahead of where Bake was at this point. Of course, Bake v1 ranked something like 31 times, aided by incredibly low BD thresholds back then. Madoka won't still be ranking when it adds ~200 discs in a week and so likely will not pass Bake.
Vol 2: 69,969 -> 71,140 (*5 wk) - adds 1212 BDs
Vol 3: 60,368 (*1 wk) - starts at 51,840/8,528.

Shana season 1 BD box does not so great though, only 1,269. I really thought it had a bit more staying power than that. I wonder if they shot themselves in the foot by releasing those cheap DVD sets that came out not very long ago at all. Now I wonder if season two will be under 1k...

Arietty second week is 9,463/48,766 so the total is over 200k at 222,261.


Two new shows make the 10k list. Ao no Exorcist and Steins;Gate! Though Steins may drop out before the end if DVDs don't rank.

Oricon DVD/BD Top 50 for the first half of 2011. This includes a bit more than the ANN news entry did, especially on DVDs.

Keep in mind that these are just sales in the first half of 2011 (well, really starts some time in December 2010) so if something was released before the cutoff, these aren't the complete numbers. Totoro is an obvious example. And of course is something here is still selling beyond the middle of the year where this cut off (like Madoka) it won't be complete either.

With these new top anime lists I'd say the chances are more likely. On slower weeks we will be in the ~200 range where they should be at, and the total sales will accompany them if they didn't rank in the previous heavy weeks.
