Was confirmed in the BD forum solicitation as well. Definitely looking like a pattern with them - too bad they aren't putting out shows I want to import, or using subs I'd want to watch. Blah.

Default Re: 2011 09/12~09/18 Full / Translated List

http://jbbs.livedoor.jp/bbs/read.cgi...1293278942/184

Full list is out, but literally nothing was added beyond what made the Tuesday list. I was wondering why I wasn't seeing anything in the sales chatter thread.

One of the slowest weeks I've seen in a long time... Actually, has the Animation Top 10 BDs ever extended beyond the Overall Top 50 BDs before? T&B v3 wasn't actually even in the top 50. And only 13 of the Animation Top 30 DVDs were actually anime (the rest were Disney/Pixar). Only 6 anime DVDs even made the Overall Top 100 DVDs.

Jeeze, anime releases are so highly concentrated. Look at all these empty weeks that could be filled with releases to spread things out! This week was utterly pitiful, while next week we could be seeing 1k thresholds. Famine and feast...

Of course I have to assume there's a reason why everything is crammed into the same week... they wouldn't be doing it if they didn't think it helped sales. Guess it lines up with what's usually pay week in Japan?

Original post has been updated with the ranking numbers but that's about it.

Default Eroge adaptation sales

http://yaraon.blog109.fc2.com/blog-entry-4200.html

Eroge adaptations that sold above the Manabi Line.

I believe the list is just first volume sales rather than averages (why do they do that when averages are so much more meaningful?) but the broad outlines are still clear - there's definitely been a lack of hit eroge adaptations in recent years. 2003 to 2006 was the heydey (minus a lull in 2004).

Granted, the distinction between non-adult and adult visual novels is pretty meaningless when it comes to anime adaptations. Are Kanon and Clannad (not on the list because not ero) fundamentally different regarding sex as anime adaptations? No, not at all, they're both entirely devoid of explicit sexual content. And Fate/Stay Night would just be another action show that could have as easily been adapted from a manga or light novels if you didn't specifically know it was an eroge.

I think once you move away from school-based harem or ren'ai storylines, the fact that something is "a visual novel adaptation" starts to mean very little. How much do Steins;Gate and To Heart have in common, really?

Still, it's interesting to me how adaptations of visual novels have waned, with their influence over romance/relationship anime largely superseded by light novels in recent years. Sometimes I'm not entirely sure if the change was for the better, but shows like Toradora!, Denpa Onna and OreImo make it hard to complain.

Default Total sales in ¥, 10k+ list

Just a heads up, I've finished adding ¥ totals to all the shows in the 10k+ list. Don't think anything shocking comes out in it. Numbers do fluctuate a lot but that's a function of widely varying MSRPs, volume counts, and series lengths.

Top 15 by total sales:
03) *68,734 ¥5,629m 50 ep 2004 Sunrise________ Kidou Senshi Gundam SEED Destiny
04) *58,589 ¥4,798m 50 ep 2002 Sunrise________ Kidou Senshi Gundam SEED
01) *78,671 ¥3,558m 15 ep 2009 Shaft__________ Bakemonogatari
10) *39,385 ¥2,888m 27 ep 2010 Kyoto Animation K-ON!!
12) *36,511 ¥2,754m 51 ep 2003 Bones__________ Hagane no Renkinjutsushi: Fullmetal Alchemist (first series, 2003)
06) *46,146 ¥2,705m 25 ep 2008 Satelight______ Macross Frontier
05) *50,551 ¥2,673m 25 ep 2006 Sunrise________ Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch
02) *69,565 ¥2,502m 12 ep 2011 Shaft__________ Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica ★(5 vols)
17) *29,146 ¥2,423m 24 ep 2007 Kyoto Animation Lucky Star
08) *42,690 ¥2,370m 25 ep 2008 Sunrise________ Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2

09) *41,037 ¥2,091m 14 ep 2006 Kyoto Animation Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
19) *28,537 ¥1,905m 24 ep 2004 Frontline______ Initial D 4th Stage
11) *39,352 ¥1,658m 25 ep 2007 Sunrise________ Kidou Senshi Gundam 00
31) *19,639 ¥1,608m 26 ep 2004 Production IG__ Koukaku Kidoutai (Ghost in the Shell) 2nd GIG

Keeping in mind that Madoka is ongoing, with the last volume numbers coming out tomorrow. Even with just its first week numbers it should end up slightly ahead of K-ON!!! and behind Bakemonogatari. Unsurprisingly, both SEED series are way out in front due to their far greater length.

Top 15 by sales per episode:
01) *78,671 ¥3,558m 15 ep (¥237.2m) 2009 Shaft__________ Bakemonogatari
02) *69,565 ¥2,502m 12 ep (¥208.6m) 2011 Shaft__________ Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica ★(5 vols)

05) *50,551 ¥2,673m 25 ep (¥106.9m) 2006 Sunrise________ Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch
15) *34,134 ¥1,260m 12 ep (¥105.0m) 2011 8-bit__________ IS -Infinite Stratos- ★(5 vols)

17) *29,146 ¥2,423m 24 ep (¥101.0m) 2007 Kyoto Animation Lucky Star
04) *58,589 ¥4,798m 50 ep (¥*96.0m) 2002 Sunrise________ Kidou Senshi Gundam SEED
08) *42,690 ¥2,370m 25 ep (¥*94.8m) 2008 Sunrise________ Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2
25) *23,841 ¥1,360m 16 ep (¥*85.0m) 2010 AIC____________ Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai
19) *28,537 ¥1,905m 24 ep (¥*79.4m) 2004 Frontline______ Initial D 4th Stage

Again, this is without the last volumes of Madoka and IS, so they'll both increase. Madoka is basically guaranteed to easily overtake Bakemonogatari for #1 with Vol. 6 sales data, which should put it around ¥245m.

You can see three distinct tiers: Madoka and Bake, then K-ON! and Haruhi, then everything else.

About 1k for both thresholds this week - brutal. Madoka sees v4-5 on the charts again. I'm glad Nichijou comes out next week, not this week.

Summer update:
UtaPri v1 is clearly way out in front for the Summer season, and I'm not sure if Idolmaster would have been enough to beat it: 8110/12822 for 20,932.

Yuru Yuri v1 does 8367/1425 for 9,792. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! Fuck yeah YRYR. I really hope the other volumes keep up and this isn't just being boosted by the student council version of the OP. I neeeeeeeed a second season so fucking badly.

NO.6 v1 does 2111/2813, totaling 4,924. That's more BDs than I expected, taking it to almost 5k.

Mayo Chiki! v1 does 3787/760 (DVD estimate) for 4,547.

BakaTest Ni v1 does 2587/1,513 for 4,100.

Nurarihyon S2 v1 does 922/1898 for 2,820 total.

Sacred Seven v1 does 2,068 BDs, DVDs were outside the Top 300 (likely less than 300 copies).

Ikoku Meiro v1 does 1486/400 (DVD estimate) for 1,886.

KamiDolls v1 does 1,437 BDs, DVDs were outside the Top 300.

Natsume San v2 does 5406/3843 for 9,249, a normal drop of 7% from v1 wk1. One annoying thing about these shows hovering right around 10k is that I never know if it's safe to add them to the 10k list or not... 10,183 after two volumes indicates a ~9k average to me so I'll hold off for now.

Nekogami Yaoyorozu v1 did not rank in either format. DVDs were outside the Top 300.

Spring update:
AnoHana v4 does 19796/3787 for 23,583, a drop of 9.4% off v3 wk1. We're now nearing as 50% drop off v1... more like 40% after v4 adds whatever else it's going to add (3k more or so I guess). Well, we already know it was a skewed v1, and that AnoHana is more like a 25-30k-range show not a 40k+ series. Average stands at 32,626 right now, which means it's dropped below IS for good.

Tiger&Bunny v5 does 21176/1759 for 22,935. Down 8% from v4 wk1. 25,545 average at the moment.

Steins;Gate v4 starts at 14254/600 (DVD estimate) totaling 14,854. Up 8% v3 wk3 which also had a DVD estimate. That marks the third volume in a row with an increase over previous, at least in the first week.

Gintama' v3 does 10,952, slight increase on v2 wk1.

AoEx v4 does 4697/6090 for 10,878. Down 11.5% from v3 wk1.

Hanasaku v3 does 7695/540 (DVD estimate) for 8,235. Up 2.3% from v3 wk1.

Dog Days v3 starts at 4715/2083, total 6,798. Hmm, slightly worried at how much it's dropped already (10.3k > 8.1k > 6.8k) but that event ticket in v1 had a pretty notable impact. Hopefully it gets a second week of BDs again (another 500-600), passes 7k, and stays at about this level to the end. I need a sequel! [Edit: And we're getting one! =D]

Hidan no Aria v4 does 3114/1652 for 4,766, a 8.6% drop from v3 wk1.

A Channel v5 does 3337/1050 (DVD estimate) for 4,387. Down 10.7% from v4 wk1.

Maria Holic 2 v3 does 1,114 BDs, DVDs ranked too low to estimate.

Lotte v4 does 1,102 BDs, DVDs ranked too low to estimate. That's exactly how many BDs v3 did.

Winter update:
Madoka v6, our final volume, starts at 51475/8714 for 60,189. Only up 2% from v5 wk1, so I don't think the director's cut of the last episode is making any difference at all. It is very slightly higher than v4 wk1 as well. Average stands at 68,003 putting it back below Seed Destiny for the moment, but should it be back up around 69k when v6 is done, and maybe 70-71k when we get full year rankings.
Update - v5 adds 1390 in its 5th week, a good bit more than I would have expected given that v6 saw very little increase over Vol. 5's first week. Total is now 65,938.
Update - v4 adds 991 in its 9th week, which means it did about 259 in the unranked weeks 7-8. Total is 67,396. that puts it 1.1% higher than v3's total so far but I'm sure v1-3 all added more this week too (just less than 922) so they're probably about the same.

Infinite Stratos v6 does 20270/6970 for 27,240, 4% decrease from v5 wk1. Current average 32,985 though it'll have a couple more weeks and yearly rankings left.

Merry v7, final volume, does 1230/500 (DVD estimate) for 1,730. Final average, 2,469 counting DVD estimates for v2, 3, 6 and 7. You might see 2,851 elsewhere from sources that only count the higher v1 DVD number of 1,102 (making it 1102 avg. DVD + 1749 avg. BD instead of 720 + 1749) but 2,469 is closer to the real number. At any rate, sadness, but I know full well how flawed the show is both in the very poor direction of its action scenes and in its rushed ending, so I can't say it deserved way better, even if I still liked and imported it and wished it had done better.

C v2 does 1,126 BDs, DVDs ranked too low to estimate.

Hourou v6, final volume, sells 982 BDs, DVDs ranked too low to estimate. Final average, 1,012. So sad, it deserved to sell ten times that much even if it was never going to.

Past seasons:
Index II v8, final volume, does 10218/3487 for 13,705, down 43% from v7 wk1. Total average right now is 16,700 and it should stay pretty close to that when it's all done.

Hetalia WS v8 is finally out, and that series just barely manages to hang onto its 10k+ list spot by doing 5,846, keeping its average at 10,129 plus whatever it gets in the second week if anything.

Star Driver v9, final volume, does 4642/2191 for 6,833. 2% increase on v8 wk1. It hasn't been getting 2nd weeks lately so the average is basically set at 8,996.

Starry Sky v8 does 2,336.

DenYuuDen v12, final volume, does 987 BDs, DVDs ranked too low to estimate. Final average, 1,665. Too bad as I'd rather like a second season.

SRW Inspector v4 does 900 (DVD estimate).

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica:
Vol 1: 78,237 (12 wk)
Vol 2: 72,507 (*8 wk)

I don't think we need a >100 list, at least not for the summer shows. Most of them wouldn't have done more than 500-700 copies in DVDs and the ones that would have done more than that did rank. Also, I No.6's first volume is priced the same way as Anohana and P4A so that 3-4k it did this time will probably drop to 2k or lower for vol 2 and onward. And Stalker was dead on this season, looks like the new method works.

Yeah, but I like those low numbers. =P More data is always good. It'd be nice to get more consistent DVD numbers for shows like Hanasaku or Steins, even if it's only a small percentage of their overall sales. For something like Mayo Chiki!, 1k DVDs is a 33% increase, etc etc.

Wow...that is a lot of DVD sales. Idolm@ster is going to be one of those shows where we'll never really get a good feel for sales due to the game bundles. Even so, I'd still love to see the sales of the standalone BD/DVD releases. They should rank.

Mayo Chiki! v1 does 3,787 BDs, DVDs did not rank.
DVD did not rank, but I am curious when the larger list comes out (I also want to see where Merry vol. 7 ranked, too). I do wonder how many of the regular edition BDs sold in comparison (probably ~0). I found it a weird move by King Records to do a limited and regular edition BD release.

Infinite Stratos v6 does 20270/6970 for 27,240, 4% decrease from v5 wk1. Current average 32,985 though it'll have a couple more weeks and yearly rankings left.
Also, the OVA is coming out in November which should sell well. Would you count that towards the avg. sales for IS or do you usually separate OVA sales?

It'll rank, but not impressively. Vol. 1 BD is gonna end up at like... 4k at this rate, and DVD maybe 1k? Vol. 2 isn't looking to be particularly better despite not competing against a super deluxe game bundle. I wonder how many people are buying the G4U discs... or more importantly, how many people that wouldn't have bought the standalone BDs are buying the G4U discs. ¥9k for a little photo session simulator seems kinda steep, but I don't underestimate the dedication of Imas fans.

DVD list is finalized at this point, so I don't think we'll see anything else from Mayo Chiki unless we get a >100 DVD list. As for Merry... I don't even know if it'll make Top 50 BDs

Nope, I don't count stand-alone OVA releases (i.e. no TV or streaming broadcast, or released independently of the main broadcast) in averages. I do make a distinction between standalone OVAs and "bonus" episodes on an otherwise normal disc, though. The latter are of course counted since they go alongside broadcast episodes.

something, I was thinking about this yesterday: do you think it would be a good idea to add the publishing companies to the 10k list? While the number of hits for a studio helps increase their prestige and potential future job offers, it's the publishing companies like Aniplex and Bandai that stand to actually profit off of the productions and they're the ones heavily involved in actually producing the shows, as they're the ones that gather talent and give the studios the resources they need to animate the series they contract them for. I noticed that the publishing companies are also a much more clear indication for whether a show turns out to be a hit or not, if you look at the top 10 selling shows in the past decade, 6 of them are Bandai, 2 are Aniplex, and 2 are Kodansha. If you look at the 10k+ list overall, it's dominated by Bandai and Aniplex with some Geneon and Kadansha thrown in. If you just take a studio's record then, unless their Kyoani, the rate of success of shows they produce is much lower if Aniplex or Bandai isn't involved. Or course, there are exceptions.
