I guess GC found its footing after ep 3 somehow.
God knows why. Episode 3 was a distinct step down from the first two on all fronts.

I agree. I've lost faith in humanity now.

Default UtaPri's sales drop

Even if it's 2:1 sales to points ratio, that's still a 10k drop, and it likely is an even steeper drop than that.
Huh, I hadn't been following UtaPri 2+ but you're right, the drop is really bizarre. Predictions for subsequent volumes are generally less accurate, but even so it doesn't seem to explain it. Don't think I've been seeing it rank highly on the daily rankings either.
Oricon will be out in the morning and I'll do the usual post (might not finish in the morning since I need to be in work earlier than usual and the list will be huge), but SoundScan estimates are posted.

Keeping in mind that SoundScan estimates are usually moderately higher than Oricon numbers:

v1 BD - 9,xxx
v2 BD - 6,xxx

v1 DVD - 13,xxx
v2 DVD - 7,115

In this case SoundScan and Oricon were quite close on Vol. 1, meaning the Vol. 2 numbers could be pretty accurate. With a minimum of 13k, maybe 12k for Oricon, it's still quite firmly ahead of Natsume or Yuru Yuri, and ahead of what Penguindrum will likely do, so it's still the best seller of the season (not counting the atypical Idolmaster situation). But sales definitely dropped, on the order of 35-45% from v1 wk1. I guess there definitely must have been some special extra in v1, like an event ticket or highly-desired CD or whatever (don't feel like researching it myself though). I don't think the ending would have turned buyers off, as I thought it was quite good and appropriate, but maybe I'm in the minority, and I'm not the intended target audience anyway.

Gotta say, all three v1s this week performed a bit below expectations. Obviously it's not a big deal with Idolmaster because of the game bundle, but PenguinDrum didn't manage to even rank DVDs, and wow only 5k BDs? Knew it wouldn't hit 10k but Stalker overshot a fair bit. I guess Usagi wasn't too much below expectations but I really hoped it'd hit 5k.
37 of the 50 BDs this week were anime. Nice.

Summer update:
PingDrum v1 does 5,216 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Again, good deal below expectations of 7-9k. Update: Approximately 650 DVDs, total 5,866.

Idolmaster v1 does 3915/1549 for 5,464. Total disappo--oh right. I'm tempted to do what someone in the livedoor thread did: a seasonal Vol. 2 ranking. Maybe I will, between Imas' situation and UtaPri's huge drop. Although v2 isn't really ranking well either so either this isn't the hit people expected and the PS3 game bundle is selling entirely on the game's merits, or a way way higher percentage of people are buying the G4U bundles than I thought. I wouldn't be too shocked if v2 BD only put up about the same numbers as v1... [Update: Game sold 65,265, but there is no breakdown of Game-only vs Game+Anime bundles).

Usagi Drop v1 does 3245/944 for 4,189. Well, at least DVDs ranked, makes it a bit better. Really feel like it deserves higher though. In many ways it's just as good as AnoHana. But maybe that's just me.

UtaPri v2 drops like a rock to 5390/6563 for 11,953, a 43% drop from v1 wk1.

Natsume San v3 does 5444/4053 for 9,497, a 2.7% increase on v2 wk1. Must be for the artbox. This season really does have a shot at hanging on to 10k, though it'll be really close. I think every volume needs both a DVD and BD second week to really clinch it. Last vol comes out at the end of the year which might hurt its chances.

Roukyuubu v2 does 4774/1549 for 6,323, only down 1.9% from v1 wk1. Very very stable.

BakaTest Ni v2 does 2638/1517 for 4,155. Slightly up from v1.

Mayo Chiki v2 ranks BD only, 3,791. Pretty close to v1 wk1 BD. Update: Approximately 750 DVDs, total .

NO.6 v2 sells 1549/1957 for 3,506, a 29% drop from v1 wk 1.

KamiDolls v2 does 1,450 BDs, DVDs don't rank. Update: Approximately 325 DVDs, total 1,775.

Sacred Seven v2 drops to 1,643 BDs, DVDs are outside Top 300 (<265).

Blood-C v2 does 948 BDs, DVDs don't rank. Update: Approximately 560 DVDs, total 1,508.

Croisee v2 does 1,161 BDs, DVDs don't rank. Update: Approximately 325 DVDs, total 1,486.

R-15 v2 drops 31% in BDs to 1,026, DVDs don't rank. Update: Approximately 425 DVDs, total 1,451.

KamiMemo v2 does 908 BDs, DVDs don't rank. Update: Approximately 450 DVDs, total 1,358.

ItsuTen v2 sells approximately 425 DVDs, BDs unranked.

Dantalian v2 sells approximately 300 DVDs, BDs unranked.

Spring update:
AnoHana v5 does 19774/3812 for 23,586 which is actually 3 copies higher than v4 wk1.

Tiger&Bunny v6 does 21613/1797 for 23,410, 2% increase on v5 wk1.

Steins;Gate v5 does 13,800 BDs. It finally ends its streak of increasingly higher first weeks every volume, though it only drops 3% vs v4 wk1 BDs. Update: Approximately 475 DVDs, total 14,275.

Gintama' v4 starts at 11,936 DVDs.

AoEx v5 does 4306/5601 for 9,907 so that's the first vol to do under 10k first week.

Dog Days v4 does 4861/2138 totaling 6,999, 3% increase on v3 wk1.

Denpa Onna v4 does 5031/1159 for 6,190, only down 2.3% from v3 wk1

Hidan no Aria v5 does 3126/1718 to total 4,844, 1.6% increase on v4 wk1.

A Channel v6, final volume, does 3545/1159 for 4,704, up about 7% from v5 wk1. Final average unless it ranks again next week (probably will), 5,241.

KamiNomi II v4 does 2,076 BDs, DVDs are outside Top 300 (<265).

Nichijou v5 does 2,020 BDs, DVDs don't rank. Update: Approximately 650 DVDs, total 2,670.

C v3 sells 1,105 BDs, DVDs don't rank. Update: Approximately 375 DVDs, total 1,480.

OreTsuba v5 sells 842 BDs, DVDs don't rank. Update: Approximately 450 DVDs, total 1,292.

Mariaholic Alive gets 1,109 BDs, DVDs are outside Top 300 (<265).

Hanasaku v4 adds 925 BDs in its second week, total 8,428.

Softenni v5 sells approximately 325 DVDs, BDs unranked.

Winter update:
Gosick v7 does 1,631 BDs, DVDs don't rank. Update: Approximately 510 DVDs, total 2,141.

Suite Precure first BD release (Box 1 of 4 accompanying the 16 DVDs) sells 1,061. Well, that's about double what its been selling on DVD, I guess. In terms of ¥ it's about 2x as much in sales.

Next week we start Fall already with Working'!!, then nothing for two weeks after that, then Persona and Majikoi. After those we wait until the end of the year for 10 different v1s, all scheduled in such a way that we'll probably not get 2nd week numbers for most of them. At least we'll get first week though.

Shame to not see Katte ni Kaizo OVA 3 in the top BD list. I think it's second OVA in August did about 2k or 3k. I'm not very sure if around 3k is good enough for SHAFT or Starchild to go ahead with the TV production. Apparently the booklet with OVA 1 says something about a TV series being in the planning stages, but I'm starting to doubt it will ever happen, I can't read Japanese that well to confirm or deny it.

We'll probably see Kaizo on Thursday.

We should be getting the Media Create sales charts this week (I think tomorrow) so we can see the sales of Idolmaster. Hopefully the rest of the G4U bundles will chart with numbers when they are released since we normally get only sales numbers for the top 20 or so.

Mayo Chiki vol. 2 sales aren't terrible at least it's been consistent with vol. 1. Might be a larger decrease depending on the DVD sales.

I won't be surprised if Steins;Gate adds a decent amount the next few weeks to bring it closer to the sales of the first four volumes.

Default Idolmaster game sales

[Update here: 65,512 first week sales all versions]

Just going to go ahead and make this its own subthread, as it could potentially generate a lot of discussion.

http://kamome.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/ghard/1320119496/

This is the link that's going around, with the take-home message being 250,000 units sold, 40% of which were the Game+BD bundle, i.e. 100,000 bundles moved.

Personally, I need someone more skilled in Japanese to confirm, as I'm not exactly sure where the numbers being claimed are coming from. That 60% number is important - my understanding is that that is 60% of the initial shipment sold through (sort of like what Westlo posted recently for Macross SnT). Is 250k the shipment, meaning 150k sales? Or is 250k the sales, meaning 415k shipment?

Also not sure where the "40% was game/anime bundle" statistic is coming from. I wonder if it's a misreading of the 60% of shipment sold line?

Even if the current reading is actually correct and the bundle sold 100k, it'd be pretty hasty to equate that to the anime being a 100k seller on its own terms. If it were that popular then it would be the biggest anime since Evangelion and have sold way way more than 5k standalone units.

The standalone v2 BD and DVD will be lucky to sell 10k combined, probably it'll be more like 5-6k. It'll be interesting to see what the G4U bundles sell - it certainly won't be 100k, I'm sure.

In essence, I'm thinking the vast majority of Vol. 1 bundle sales were more about fans buying the fanciest version available to get all the extras as a whole, rather than ~95% of the anime fanbase deciding to spend an extra ¥12,660 when the BD is primarily what they wanted. Basically, a bundle sale is not a true equivalent to a BD sale had there never been a game bundle.

At any rate, I won't be counting the bundles in my lists (though it'll get asterisk'd)... no matter how much I love the show. To give an admittedly extreme analogue, it's similar to saying that every copy of Super Mario Brothers bundled with an NES is equivalent to a standalone copy sold... obviously not the case.

[Edit: Thought of a way better example... it's like if every disc of a Haruhi S3 were bundled with a deluxe edition of the next few light novels.]

I had a feeling that the Stalker numbers would be inflated because of how it ranked in the top 10 when it was first registered and because it was delayed by a month. I also noticaed that the second volume only had 2k on Stalker and was projected to do about 4.9k in its opening week, and I figured that was more indicative of what vol 1's sales would be. I figure vol 1 will do 6-7k overall anyway, which is really good for a Starchild production and can be considered a hit on the same level as a 10k selling Aniplex produced show.

That 60% number is important - my understanding is that that is 60% of the initial shipment sold through (sort of like what Westlo posted recently for Macross SnT). Is 250k the shipment, meaning 150k sales? Or is 250k the sales, meaning 415k shipment?
It's saying that 256,000 copies were shipped, 61% of which were sold.

Just consider the standalone releases of iM@S the equivalent to an RE release. The vast majority of fans will be buying the G4U bundle, just like most of them bought this game bundle. The iM@S anime is very popular in itself in Japan considering that there are 193 threads for it on 2ch, making it far and away the most popular Summer title and is pretty much on par with Steins;Gate.

You have mentioned it in the past before, but I agree with how you're going to handle iM@S sales.

The series is going to be successful, but one has to wonder if the show could have stood by it's own merits without the game bundles available because not everyone who will buy the G4U bundles necessarily would want the anime.

At the same time, some people may buy the game, watch the anime, and decide they want to watch more of it.
