Behold the power of importers! Add a bunch of dub/sub options and look at them snap it up!

Wow, that's pretty sad. It's a disappointing release anyway (for several reasons), but it's not like anyone knew that when pre-ordering.

The movie has been out on BD for three and a half years already, importable that whole time, and that version is still in stock at Amazon, so I'm not sure how much of a market there really was left anyway. Plus it's been licensed for years, albeit on DVD. We don't have sales numbers for the 2008 BD release because that's before Oricon started putting out BD numbers and it didn't make any yearly top sellers lists.

Anyway, I'm not sure how anyone could have expected this to sell all that much.

Well, this was the "International" version. Aside from adding Voices of a Distant Star and She and Her Cat to the extras, there was very little to interest Japanese buyers. (And in the end those extras were worse than the DVD release versions)

But they added enough sub options to cover the majority of the world's population, along with the English dub, and did translate the booklet to English. And for that they got 400 people to buy it. I'm going to guess more than half of those were Japanese buyers.

This release was not worth their effort. There's no way it's not a loss. With few exceptions, no matter how many enticements you add, the number of people willing to pay Japanese prices outside of Japan is generally minuscule.

Not only BDs but DVDs added on Thursday.

Fall update:
Persona 4 v1 clocks in first week at 24120/9245 for 33,365. I can see it hitting 40k eventually, though it'll take quite a few weeks. I kind of expect Volume 2 to fall down into the mid 20s. Really been thinking lately that the OP+discount is going to cause at least as big a drop as AnoHana saw, maybe more.

Majikoi v1 does 2,792 BDs, DVDs don't rank. 12/08 Update: DVD estimate 625, total 3,417.

Working'!! v2 doesn't drop as much as some had feared. 8047/3657 for 11,704. Only 24% off v1 wk1, and 37% below the 3 week total of v1, nothing like the nearly 50% drop for season one. Figure it adds another... 1500-2000 or so, taking it over 13k. Things are looking pretty good for Working to do something very respectable vis-a-vis volumes 2+ of season one.

Summer update:
UtaPri v3 does 5176/6401 for 11,577.

Natsume san v4 does 5132/3685 for 8,817. One volume left, and just barely hanging on to a 10k average. It's going to be really close.

Idolmaster v2 went up... but not much, even though there's no huge fancy PS3 bundle this time, just the G4U. 5375/1420 for 6,795. So only about 1450 people switched over to the standalone BD for the second volume, and DVDs actually went down. Will be interested in seeing G4U numbers I guess. at the very least it'll define an absolute utter limit, albeit undoubtedly an inflated one. There's only one version of the G4U bundle, right? No stand-alone G4U to muck up the game rankings?

PingDrum v2 does 4,557 BDs, DVDs don't rank. probably right at 5k with ~500 DVDs. 12/08 Update: DVD estimate 475, total 5,032.

Mayo Chiki v3 gets 3,474 BDs, DVDs don't rank. 12/08 Update: DVD estimate 625, total 4,099.

Usagi Drop v2 does 3,013 BDs, DVDs don't rank. Actually not much of a drop in BDs at all, only 75, but losing the DVD number makes it look like a lot less. 12/08 Update: DVD estimate 875, total 3,888.

No.6 v3 does 1,356/1,637 for 2,993.

BakaTest Ni v3 does 2276/1,238 for 3,514.

Spring update:
AnoHana v6, final volume, gets 19676/3819 for 23,495 first week.

Tiger&Bunny v7 does 20517/1509 for 22,026.

Steins v6 does 12,676 BDs. 12/08 Update: DVD estimate 425, total 13,101.

Gintama' v5 gets 10,958.

AoEx v6 sells 3793/4867 totaling 8,660.

Dog Days v5 does 4614/2006 for 6,620. Get a second week on BD and it should still be more or less on track. Probably going to end around 7.5k average.

Denpa Onna v5 sells 4793/1017 for 5,810. Just barely got onto the DVD list this time, v6 won't be so lucky given it's coming out in the end of year clusterfuck.

Hidan no Aria v6 does 2758/1413 for 4,171.

Nichijou v6 drops to 1,788 BDs, DVDs don't rank. Being Nichijou is suffering. And Kadokawa has KyoAni adapting another obscure title next... smart guys, smart (even if I'll probably love it like I love this). 12/08 Update: DVD estimate 625, total 2,413.

Sacred Seven v3 does 1,402 BDs, DVDs don't rank. 12/08 Update: DVDs outside top 300, below 305.

Past seasons:
Gosick v8 does 1,596 BDs, DVDs don't rank. 12/08 Update: DVD estimate 500, total 2,096.

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai:
Vol 1: 45,356 (*4 wk)
Vol 2: 32,466 (*4 wk)
Vol 3: 29,510 (*4 wk)
Vol 4: 27,751 (*4 wk)
Vol 5: 26,144 (*3 wk)
Vol 6: 23,495 (*1 wk) - 19676/3819 first week
Current average: 30,787

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
HidaSketch SP does 7032/2358 for 9,390. I thought it would crack 10k first week but it's on track to match the three other specials. Impressive for a show going into its fourth season.

Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo does 4441/1703 for 6,144.

Dennou Coil BD Box does 1,980.

No new v1s for a couple weeks.

I'm very happy about this. v1 has finally started to drop in the Amazon Japan DVD rankings and v2 has surpassed it and hopefully it stays strong. This is likely the hit of the season. I honestly thought that Horizon was going to surpass Persona 4 before the solicitations were listed, but I was very wrong and I'm happy I was wrong.

Not that Horizon is bad, by no means is it anywhere close to bad it's very good, but usually the series' I'm very excited about sell awfully or aren't exactly smash hits, such as Index II where yeah it sold pretty great but it wasn't Railgun and I never expected it to be.

That said, it's not like Horizon has zero chance of surpassing Persona 4, it just seems unlikely at this point.

Horizon wont' be anywhere near Persona. But you're forgetting Fate/Zero, which is much more the rival for Persona than Horizon.

Yup, there is only one version of the G4U bundle (same goes with all the subsequent volumes).

I mentioned in the iM@S subthread here that the G4U vol.2 bundle practically sold out on day one and Bamco is doing a 2nd print run to meet demand. Media Create sales should be out soon, though.

I have no idea how I keep forgetting about Fate/Zero. Probably because of it's release date. I'd say Fate/Zero would make more money than Persona 4 when their releases are completed. Though I can't say that for sure, can't I? That's the entire question about Fate/Zero's release.

Yeah, Horizon is more a rival to WORKING, where I'm really interested in seeing which one comes out on top. Horizon looks like it'll do about 15k for vol 1 total, but there's still the finale which could shoot the rankings up again.

Default Re-Thinking the Manabi Line

Per ANN, Index's producer, Nakayama, stated that producing two cours cost ~300 million yen. Index is, of course, likely has a slightly higher budget than most anime.

Setting aside the anime's effect on other sources of revenue, to recover the costs solely through BD/DVD revenue, Index would need to have averaged 7,500 copies per volume (assumptions: eight volumes and a real price of 5,000). Odds are, though, that the distribution chain absorbs more than I estimate. But I think it's clear that, for a show like Index, above average DVD sales by themselves do not cover the costs. They need to be exceptional (i.e., maybe above 10,000).
