While 1080p is great, unfortunately my computer is not powerful enough to stream at that quality without dragging. But I can get by with 720p. Certainly it's great that better quality videos are coming.

It's time to graduate from here. But there's still some business left.
The only thing better than anime is sports. Get hit hard and you got JACKED UP! Or else it's a C'mon Man!

So, where you able to notice a difference?
I switched back and forth a few points in Inu x Boku SS after I finshed it. As I expected.... no, I couldn't. Maybe it would be more noticeable if I used my TV, but the last time I tried that, my TV would produce any sound for some reason, which made it very awkward to watch.

From a sources perspective it's never been a problem to do 1080p as opposed to 720p.

HDCAM is 1080i or 1080p and pretty much all modern shows outside of a few are mastered on hdcam or hdcam-sr. Actually Vanguard is the one exception I know which is still digibeta (480).

So until now the reason for not doing 1080p has just been bandwidth and too many systems not being able to playback smoothly.

But in the ~3 years since simulcasting started those have all improved enough to go ahead and bump it up to 1080p.

I'd be curious to know how much they bump up the bitrate for the 1080p though compared to the 720p.

I bet this'll make all the "fansub" groups who were only doing 720p releases switch to 1080p to "compete" with Horriblesubs .

That would be funny.

Honestly, this was probably the primary reason CR did this. Even if the gain in video quality is actually fairly small - or hell, imperceptible - to the majority of viewers, there are more than enough anime fans out there who will go "CR has more Peez, more Peez more Better". Though CR's 720 streams are quite good for streaming video for the most part.

But as long as 1080 is better, even very slightly, or at least no worse, I have no objections whatsoever. Like I said, if CR can get JP on board with letting them do 1080, all the better for when we're at a point where it really will make a significant difference.

I've always found audio quality to be a more common issue on CR than video though. Mashiro-iro sounded really muffled (enough that I stopped using CR after a few eps), and I'm not big on either their audio or video for ZnT F, but it's watchable for now. The one ep of Recorder to Randoseru I watched had pretty questionable audio too. There were other shows with audio noticeably below the fansubs, though I'm blanking on examples right now.

1080p streams are nice, but I like the fact that CR is giving higher quality streams (720p? at least) through their Android app (did ios users have this already?) now for this season. So much nicer to watch stuff on both my phone and tablet.

So there is your "official" confirmation. But I'm more interested in seeing that they kept the average bitrate per pixel (if bumped it up a bit) for the 1080 stream. Given the same sort of data sizes, I'd be almost equally stoked to see a 720 stream with double bitrate. That has been my biggest gripe about the CR 720 stream.

I don't see any improvement on my Roku 2. Then again, I can only get half quality streams all the time anyway.

Yup, still there ... a number of systems around the world are happier with the 720p bandwidth, so no reason to take that option off the table.
