Oh, i see. I remember that a couple of weeks ago all Horizon volumes were ranked within the top 20 for a couple of days. Maybe it was because a lot of people preordered all of them at once? That would explain the sudden drop

Anyways, i'm more at ease now. I really want Horizon to do well, eventhough the second season is already announced, i'd like the franchise to span several more seasons. I'm expecting average sales after all the volumes go on sale to be 20k. Hopefully i'm not dreaming way too hard.

Oh, and curse you Sunrise for not releasing the show on DVD. You must hate money.

Inu x Boku SS also hasn't been solicited yet. Not that I expect it do better than mediocre, but still. Or maybe you were only referring to shows that had the potential to actually sell well.

It's possible. We don't know what the upper limit on Vol. 1 sales is quite yet, so it's hard to say, but as soon s we have Vol. 2 numbes it'll be a lot easier to tell. But say Vol. 1 tops out at 25k when all is said and done, that would require the remaining 6 to average 19.2k. Possible, but only if it has very consistent sales.

Do note that Vol. 1 was discounted though, and discounted first volumes often have a comparatively larger gap with their subsequent volumes than normal released wheer every disc is the same price. That said, I expect Horizon to be far less impacted by the discount than most other shows, because the subsequent volumes have been ranking so well. That and Vol. 1 was supply constrained.

I actually think this was a very smart move. DVD is a dying format for late-night, non-fujoshi TV series, particularly high-selling ones.

Look at the best selling (10k+) 2011 shows so far, for example, ordered by % of sales from BD:
Steins;Gate - DVD (4%) / BD (97%)
iDOLM@STER - DVD (6%) / BD (95%)
Tiger & Bunny - DVD (8%) / BD (93%)
Madoka Magica - DVD (15%) / BD (86%)
AnoHana - DVD (17%) / BD (84%)
Persona 4 - DVD (27%) / BD (74%)
Infinite Stratos - DVD (27%) / BD (74%)
Working'!! - DVD (34%) / BD (67%)
Natsume San - DVD (44%) / BD (57%)
Uta no Prince-sama - DVD (59%) / BD (42%)
Ao no Exorcist - DVD (60%) / BD (41%)

DVD only:
Gintama'

BD only:
Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon

They're all three quarters BD or more, except for Working (two thirds) and then three predominantly fujoshi titles.

I really don't think it was in the distributors' economic interest to even print DVDs for Steins;Gate or Hanasaku Iroha, for example. There were only three dual-format titles over 5,000 in 2011 that sold less than 2/3rds of discs as BD and 8 that sold under 3/4ths on BD (out of 22).

There just aren't many home video-buying Japanese anime fans who don't have BD players these days. And the few holdouts will upgrade right quick when their favorite show is BD only.

Did you type the wrong show or did you forget to include Hanasaku Iroha up top?

Oh, I guess that wording could be confusing. Hanasaku is just another example I commonly cite of BDs demolishing DVDs in sales. It's not in the list because I was only listing 10k+ shows.

Hanasaku was 94% BD [full list here].

Haganai did about exactly as we predicted; 2k DVDs and 6-7k BDs. I wasn't sure if it would really be a 10k seller but there we go. It will be for the first vol at least anyway. And looks like P4 vols 1-2 shooting up in Amazon's rankings wasn't just a coincidence, sales of both increased this week (or rather for vol 2 maintained the previous week's momentum). I guess people liked ep 14.

EDIT: And Ano Natsu was registered today and it's already at rank 6 for vol in BD (DVDs aren't being tallied yet). The Nagai magic at work yet again. Seems like ever anime this guy directs turns out to be a hit.

Kinda dissapointed there are no new numbers for Horizon. Maybe on thursday

Congratulations to Haganai fans, a second season may be possible after all.

Also yay for Ano Natsu, first 6 volumes are within the top 15. I thought all of them were already listed and the reason i couldn't find them was because they were out of the top 300. Glad i was wrong

-- (49) 45 *,361 *21,791 *4 Tiger & Bunny v8

-- (*8) -- 2,221 **2,221 *1 Sphere Club v2

Very slow week and low thresholds, enabling Persona 4 v1 to get in again, hah.
And yesss, 10k Haganai! Sequel where?

Fall update:
Haganai v1 starts at 7764/2197 for 9,961. Essentially a 10k Vol 1, awesome. Hopefully it can still rank next week despite the end of the month crush. I guess it ought to, since not everything comes out by the 22nd, but who knows. What's really important is that this was not a discounted Vol. 1, so there's a chance of maintaining consistent sales. It won't average 10k in the end, but it could be close depending on how high v1 goes.

Persona v2 adds 610 BDs, total 29,771.
v1 adds 399 BDs in its 8th week (weeks 5-7 didn't rank). Because total BDs are 29,959 that means it did on average 296 a week those weeks. Total, 41,369.

Summer update:
Idolmaster v3 gets a third week to add 433 BDs, bringing it to 7,827 standalone, or 26,819 with the G4U bundle.

Past seasons:
Tiger&Bunny v8 adds 361 BDs in week 4, total 23,299.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Bakemonogatari BD box adds an incredible 1828, 300+ more than last week, total bringing its total to 27,437.

Toradora BD box isn't done either though! Adds adds 416, total 21,682.

Top grossing BD boxes:
¥1356.6m (34,000 * ¥39,900) - Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
¥*867.1m (21,682 * ¥39,900) - Toradora!
¥*806.7m (27,437 * ¥29,400) - Bakemonogatari
¥*456.7m (12,427 * ¥36,750) - Strike Witches (7,011 + 5,416)

Bake is closing in on Toradora, but both are mind-blowingly impressive.

No new v1s next week, before Guilty, Mashiro, Last Exile, UNGO and Phi Brain the week after.

I don't think the restock has taken effect yet. Next week or the week after, most likely. Horizon's second and third weeks (3,195 and 620 respectively) have probably worked through most of what was left in the distribution systems. Even if it does chart on Thursday, it would be less than 399 copies. Even high sellers in the 20k range often don't rank for more than 3 or 4 weeks.

So I'd look to later in January.

Go Haganai! Though I can't help but be a bit disappointed that it wasn't higher. Before we had the Stalker numbers to give us a good idea of where it would be, I was hoping for, and thought the show had a realistic shot at, the 15-20k range. I guess I just figured it would benefit a lot more from the huge popularity of the light novels than it actually did.
