Kimi to Boku. is a split cour, 13 episode Aniplex show. It's being sold in six volumes (2/2/2/2/2/3) for 6.720 yen (LE BD) for Vol. 1-5 and 7,770 yen (LE BD) for the final.

It's a mix I'm sure. Many shows don't get boxset re-releases, and most that do sell too little to even rank. Whereas he did make specific mention of how distributors make sure their discs stay in stock and in print for a long time - unlike the "we'll return it after two weeks" B&M days of R1. It sounds like they are banking on disc sales over a period of years.

Quote:
On the other hand, selling 10, 20, or even 50 discs a week is never going to rank, but if shows keep selling those numbers in the 6 months or so after release, stores may keep re-ordering them and that could certainly add up. And I hadn't really thought of that angle until just now.
Yeah, that's how I interpreted it. I bet K-ON! still modes a few dozen discs a week. I'd say Bakemonogatari too but that one went pretty thoroughly out of stock eventually, which set it up for massive boxset sales.

Quote:
Well, that's the thing. That "eventually" wasn't just referring to disc sales. They become profitable eventually with all revenue streams combined, including merchandise royalties and international licensing. And it wasn't specifically mentioned in the article, but box set releases would have to figure into that too.
True, I was focusing too much on disc sales in my reply, but indeed the other types of revenue lower the need for disc sales to really be 8k. As long as all those other revenue sources fall under the production committee umbrella, as I would assume most do.

The next level of understanding is figuring out who wins and loses most often in a production committee. I'm sure it's in everyone interests to spread the revenues somewhat equitably, else the groups that constantly lose out aren't going to join committees anymore. But I can't see how, say, anyone in Symphogear's committee is making out as well as the music rights holders. Merchandise will probably be average, disc sales will be pretty bad, but the OP and anything else Mizuki Nana is of course a major hit.

But it must be spread around well enough since the model keeps being used.

Thanks for the clarification, no wonder Oricon is more highly regarded. I wasn't sure if it was accuracy or if SoundScan numbers were just harder to get a hold of, but Oricon is definitely more comprehensive.

I remember a small discussion on what stores report to Oricon, I think, somewhere in the 2011 sales thread. There was a link that gave a decent list of stores that report to them for sales. I remember being quite surprised seeing YesAsia on the list since they aren't a Japanese company.

I posted the link to the Oricon short list of stores last year. Here it is again for this year's thread. (Scroll down to "調査店について" Participating stores.) It's accurate as of last month.

Default Re: 2012 03/05~03/11 Anime 30/10 List

Miscellaneous stuff:

- The sales didn't seem high enough for me to bother checking, but I'd forgotten the MSRP was so high - Saki makes the ¥100m list:
25) ¥*125.9m (*4,441 * ¥28,350) - Ga Rei -Zero-
26) ¥*120.4m (*2,509 * ¥48,000) - Saki
27) ¥*111.6m (*3,322 * ¥33,600) - Ookami to Koushinryou

- Fate/Zero's numbers mark the last 2011 release to begin other than Bakuman 2, which won't sell enough to notice. So we can say that 2011 had the most shows with a 10k+ average from 2000 onward, with 14. This beats the record of 13 set in 2008.

- This also marks a milestone for Aniplex: it's their 30th show in the 10k list, giving them 30/92 places, or 32.6% of the entire list.

- Fate/Zero also enters the 2011 best-selling Vol. 1 list at #3, with a fairly clear path to taking #2:
80,089 12 Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica [BD+DVD]: 2011/04/27
46,474 *4 Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai [BD+DVD]: 2011/06/29
42,690 *1 Fate/Zero [BD-BOX]: 2012/03/07
41,369 *8 Persona 4 [BD+DVD]: 2011/11/23
38,885 *6 IS -Infinite Stratos- [BD+DVD]: 2011/03/30

- I've also updated the 2011 average sales list. Fate takes a guaranteed #2 spot, well ahead of Infinite Stratos but well behind Madoka. The titles currently over 10k average in 2011 are:
71,057 - Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (Winter, 6 vols) 10,234 DVD (15%) / 60,823 BD (86%)
42,690 - Fate/Zero (Fall, 1 vols)
33,812 - Infinite Stratos (Winter, 6 vols) 9,003 DVD (27%) / 24,810 BD (74%)
32,982 - Persona 4 (Fall, 9 vols) 8,595 DVD (27%) / 24,387 BD (74%)
31,523 - Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai (Spring, 6 vols) 5,351 DVD (17%) / 26,173 BD (84%)
27,773 - Tiger & Bunny (Spring, 9 vols) 1,984 DVD (8%) / 25,790 BD (93%)
25,624 - The iDOLM@STER + G4U Bundle (Summer, 9 vols) 1,633 DVD (7%) / 23,991 BD (94%)
22,413 - Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon (Fall, 7 vols)
17,837 - Uta no Prince-sama Maji Love 1000% (Summer, 6 vols) 10,663 DVD (60%) / 7,175 BD (41%)
16,498 - Steins;Gate (Spring, 9 vols) 500 DVD (4%) / 15,998 BD (97%)
13,651 - Working'!! (Fall, 7 vols) 4,198 DVD (31%) / 9,453 BD (70%)
13,310 - Gintama' (Spring, ? vols)
12,887 - Ao no Exorcist (Spring, 10 vols) 7,639 DVD (60%) / 5,248 BD (41%)
12,020 - Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai (Fall, 6 vols) 2,526 DVD (22%) / 9,495 BD (79%)
10,532 - Guilty Crown (Fall, 11 vols) 2,645 DVD (26%) / 7,887 BD (75%)
10,223 - Natsume Yuujin-chou San (Summer, 5 vols) 4,452 DVD (44%) / 5,772 BD (57%)

Of the above, Guilty Crown will definitely drop below 10k, and Haganai may also do so, but is in a stronger position. This is why there are 16 above but only 14 in the 10k+ list - I'll only add GC and Haganai if and when I'm confident they can stay over 10k.

I must be one of the like 20 people who is buying the show. haha.

I'd love to see how many copies it sold, but the numbers are probably so low that maybe year end rankings might show it.
