Default Space Brothers (Uchuu Kyoudai) discussion thread

宇宙兄弟

Once upon a time there were two brothers, Hibito and Mutta. Hibito, the littler brother, had been blessed with good luck since the day he was born. Mutta, the elder, had always had bad luck. One day, the two brothers saw a UFO. This experience made them decide to become astronauts. And while Hibito succeeded, Mutta went to work for a car company. Then he caused an incident and had to quit. And then just as Hibito is about to fly to the moon...

To follow his brother Hibito to the moon, Mutta will attempt to become an astronaut at the age of 32. Unaware of his own talent, elder brother Mutta chases his dreams to get back in front of his younger brother. Believing the worlds: ‘The older brother should always be ahead of the younger one...’

Default Episode 1

Well this is something worth watching for sure. I just watched Freedom and enjoyed it, so this is a good followup. I'm not sure if something like this will keep my interest for four more cours if that ends up being true, though. Hopefully A-1 can keep up the quality for that long. I noticed some parts of this first episode that seemed a little sketchy for something by them. They were minor and unimportant scenes, but I wouldn't be surprised if an unusually long running time is the reason.

Episode 1:

- Ahahaha, the very first American we meet is named FREDDIE SATURN. That's just... lol.
- I like how Hibito handled the UFO question. In just a few lines he gives me the impression of a smart, mature person - which he needs to be, as an astronaut.
- Heh I like the older brother too. Headbutting your boss is a bad idea.

That was fantastic... I am so down for a year of this.

So far, they've managed to not step on any technical land mines which is my biggest concern for anything of this nature. I do had some hope that they know what they're doing on that side of things though.

A solid and entertaining first episode- as something said, I could probably deal with a year of this.

Mutta sure didn't have any luck finding a job.
Guess headbutting the boss really came to bite him on the ass.
His brother on the other hand... was the one who followed his own dreams.
It's time Mutto did something with his life too and his chance just arrived!
Nice first episode, will give this anime a shot.

I can't make up my mind about this. At times it just seemed silly and others it gave me a real warm feeling. I can't decide whether Mutto is a total dork or if there is something more to him. Another show I'm going to have to hold judgement on.

JAXA, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency which is sort of like their NASA, is their technical adviser so I don't think you have to worry about that part. They did the same for Rocket Girls too. Probably part of their outreach programme. What better way to teach the public about space exploration and research than through anime?

So it turns out that headbutting your supervisor does not, in fact, do good things for your career. Who knew?

That was a decent first episode. I like the brothers well enough and the show is certainly different. Whether or not I stick with this will probably depend on how many other shows I decide to keep watching more than anything else.

Default Episode 2

Mutta sure is a stubborn one.
Childhood flashbacks were nice.
I'm glad he decided to take the exams.
Flushing his phone was totally ROFL
Kenji, Mutta & that girl... hope they'll be astronauts together ^^

Episode 2:

- Silly Mutta. Take the test. You were so happy when you passed the first round.
- I'm not clear on what Sharon's relationship is to the Nanba family. I doubt she's a literal aunt, given she's clearly a foreigner. Just a family friend I guess.
- He takes the exam with her encouragement. And... he passes of course, he can't get rejected in episode two. =P

- Second exam! ...Way to flush your phone down the toilet, Mucchan.
- Distracted by a loose screw the whole time.
- And after the interview we start meeting other astronauts who we can assume will also pass. A guy named Kenji and a younger woman.
- Heh, the chair screw was loosened on purpose.
- Woman (Serika by the credits) is Sawashiro Miyuki, yaaaaaaaay~ I was assuming she'd have another role besides young Mutta.
