Is this series of 7 movies any good in terms of animation and story? I know that Aniplex USA is re-releasing it on DVD sometime this year.

Some stories are better than others but overall a big yes. Animation is pretty good but it's the use of the colors that make this series look very beautiful. The soundtrack also has to be mentioned as being absolutely superb.

Seconding that recommendation. While I did think the plot was a little too confusing at times, and I didn't really like the first movie much when I first watched it (though I found it held up better when I rewatched it after having seen the rest of the series), it was overall quite worth watching. And yes, the animation quality and music are both fantastic. Yuki Kajiura is probably my favourite composer working in the anime industry at the moment, and these movies are a big part of why.

I thought it was an enjoyable little series and it works best to watch the second film first (in my humble opinion.)
