Default Re: 2012 Spring Vol 1 Rankings

Has this happened before, nothing being added on Thursdays?

About the Spring season, I'm too lazy right now to see how everything from this season is doing in stalker (I did look at a few things like Jormungand earlier this month, and they're at like 2,000 points), but I'm wondering, how is it look now when we're more than halfway through? Does it still look like a financial bust?

Default Re: Anime Sales in Japan - 2012

I think last year spoiled us too much

Other than summer, we had at least 4 shows per season that surpassed 10k. Spring '11, in particular, was spectacular. I don't think this spring will come even close to the last one in terms of sales. A lot of people were saying that Fate/Zero and Nisemonogatari emptied Otaku's wallets, but last year we had Madoka (60k show) and Infinite Stratos (35k show) on the same season and yet the season that followed was very healthy saleswise.

At least I can affirm that this summer will be a lot more exciting than last year's

If "bust" means no huge smash hits, then maybe. There are still no likely 20k sellers except for Fate/Zero which we know will do ~50k.
It remains to be seen what Nyaruko's sales look like, after it slowed down a bit. it's still almost always Top 100 though and probably still best selling new show of the season.
Hyouka looks very likely to be second, unless Eureka Seven surges. Hyouka was maintaining its recent best-of-season rankings until this week, when the announcement of a Saki event ticket and the late solicitation of Lupin (which will likely drop in a few days) pushed it down. It continues trading places with Nyaruko though.
Saki as mentioned only increased because of the event ticket, which is a shame. I was hoping it was a legit surge of interest, but now we can expect v2-6 to be lower than whatever v1 does. I just need it to sell enough to get a Side-B sequel...
Accel World and Eureka are hard to call. They should be easy 5k, but what about 10k? No idea.
I guess there is always the chance Lupin could maintain its high initial ranking, but I doubt it. Any BD box that does half decently always ranks high initially due to high price, but staying there is very hard.
And there's still the Aniplex titles we can't guess sales of, but I sincerely doubt any of them does well except maybe Natsu-iro.
Lastly AKB. While it's still too early to call, it seems to have ended up a bit of a dud, relative to what it could have sold. I think the season would feel a lot different if this had convinced the AKB fanbase and been a massive success.

Personally, I'm going to take a bit of a break this season. Not because I really need to, but just to be safe, and this seems like a good season to take a breather in. I might import as few as 3 this season: Hyouka and Saki are locks; Acchi Kocchi is very likely. I've been averaging 5-7 a season lately, so pulling back just to be ready for a potentially big Summer (plus I've already got 4 BD boxes confirmed this year) seems like a decent idea. On sequels alone I have at least 3 set Summer imports, let alone anything new.

Default April/May Monthly Rankings

http://jbbs.livedoor.jp/bbs/read.cgi...278942/369-370 (included second post correcting the first)

This covers the weeks starting 4/09, 4/16, 4/23, 4/30, and 5/07.

Natsume Shi v3 adds 402 BDs, total 8,803.

Penguindrum v7 adds 355 BDs, total 4,334.

Symphogear v2 adds 403 BDs, total 4,662.

Tamayura v5 BD adds 242 BDs, total 4,631.

Ikamusume!? v5 adds 360 BDs, total 3,258.

PapaKiki v2 adds 349 BDs, total 3,463.

Rinne v2 adds 553 BDs, total 3,315.

Shana III v5 adds 414 BDs, total 3,936.

MajiKoi v6 adds 375 BDs, total 3,398. Final average 3,437.

Bah, last week of this is the first week of Mouretsu v3, so the next list will only include v3 wk2+, and those won't total enough to make the threshold. Newtype's rankings start one week later, not earlier, so that won't help either.

Default 2012 Mid-year rankings (unofficial/preliminary)

Note: These are not official the Oricon mid-year rankings, where we sometimes see new data added for weeks where something didn't rank in the top 100/50 each week. Those come out in late June, and cover the top 50 DVDs and BDs from the last week of December 2011 through to I guess the last week of May.

But I was looking at that period anyway (and extracting the data is easy so I might as well post) to get a sense of how high the threshold usually is. In 2011 for anime it was 9,621 on DVD (anime-only) and 17,320 for BD (all-genre). Sadly, there is no top 50 anime-only BD list at the halfway point in the year, so thresholds are very high. For example, only 16 TV anime BDs were ni the BD Top 50 mid-year list in 2011, though some spots were taken up by anime movies/OVAs, which I don't list here.

So these are the top 100 best selling discs so far this year, with release dates between weeks starting 2011/12/26 (where Oricon's half-year should start) and 5/14/2012 (official list will also include 5/21 and maybe 5/28).

I didn't break them down into DVD and BD lists because it would just make the post annoyingly long, but I can do that if anyone cares to see it. This list has the most updated information, including the April/May rankings monthly I just posted. It'll be interesting to see how much if any some of these increase in the mid-year list.

Maybe the Aniplex issue is indeed having a visible affect on Oricon sales. It's hard to be sure but it explains some irregularities.
Another big Thursday. Nise hangs on again, taking both first and last this week.

Spring update:
KoreZom 2 v1 sells 2192/569 for 2,761. Only 5 BDs less than s1 v1 wk1, but only half as many DVDs.

Winter update:
Nisemonogatari v2 sells 43263/7515 for 50,778. Now see, this is weird. DVDs went up, while BDs went down 14%. It's really tempting to point out that only the DVD was orderable from Amazon due to the Aniplex dispute. Similar for Persona 4, described below.

InuBoku sees a it of a drop, down 17% on v2 wk1 with 4770/4630 for 9,400. I wonder why so much? I didn't expect v2>v3 to drop more than v1>v2. Hopefully it's not going to keep dropping and risk going below 10k.

HS DxD sells 6549/2225 for 8,774. Down 4.8% on v2wk1.

Natsume Shi v4 sells 4662/3394 for 8,056. Down 4% on v3 wk1.

Aquarion Evol v2 is down 17% with 5578/1594 for 7,172.

AnoNatsu v3 sells 5,610 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Down 3.7% on v2wk1.

Rinne v3 sells 2,481 BDs, slightly up from v2, but DVDs do not rank. Update: About 370 DVDs, total 2,851.

Brave10 v3 sells 860/1542 for 2,402.

Another v3 sells 1,953 BDs, slightly up from v2, but DVDs do not rank. Update: About 350 DVDs, total 2,303.

Zero no Tsukaima F v4 sells 1525/655 for 2,180.

Milky Holmes 2 v3 sells 1,370, DVDs do not rank.

Fall update:
Persona 4 v7 sells 15877/5909 for 21,786. Just like Nisemonogatari, BDs took a much bigger hit this volume than DVDs. BDs dropped 15% (about the same as Nise) while DVDs dropped only 5% on v6 wk1, and perhaps more to the point this DVD number is actually better than v4 or v5 wk1 while this is the lowest first week BD number by over 2000 units. Strange fluctuations are, well, common, but it's very hard not to think Amazon has something to do with this.

Horizon v6 sells 17,452, best first week since v3. Up 9.2% on v5wk1. It'll probably have a smaller wk2, but I know I increased that wk1 by at least 1, as it's the only volume of it I bought, thanks to episode 10. <3

Haganai v5 sells 7581/2067 for 9,648. Down only 0.8% on v4wk1, and should be over 10k next week.

Guilty Crown v5 sells 4789/1474 for 6,263, down another 12%. Did this show really sell 12k v1? Haganai has gone 12.9k down to 9.6k but GC has gone 12.1k to 6.2k over the same period.

Sekai-ichi 2 v6, final volume, sells 3,061. Final average 3,862.

Maken-ki v6, final volume, sells 1915/827 for 2,742. Final average, 3,024.

Mashiro-iro v5 sells 1956/726 for 2,682.

Chihayafuru v6 sells 1922/619 for 2,541.

Last Exile Fam v5 sells 2,452 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Gundam AGE v4 sells 1,565 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Update: About 550 DVDs, total 2,115.

Mirai Nikki v6 sells 1,597 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Kimi to Boku v6, final volume, sells 882 DVDs, BDs do not rank. Final average, 1,157 DVDs, BDs never ranked.

Past seasons:
Gintama' v11 starts at 10,186, best first week since v7.

The iDOLM@STER v8 sells 5723/1277 for 7,000, up 1.9% on v7wk1. Still really consistent. G4U numbers later this week, and one volume to go. Update: G4U Vol. 8 sells 16670, bringing the combined total to 23,670.

Penguindrum v8, final volume, sells 4,058 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Update: about 440 DVDs, total 4,498. Final average 5,196.

Nichijou v12 sells 1711/557 for 2,268. One to go, nearly out of its misery.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Yamato 2199 v1 sells 15908/6101 for 23,009.

Berserk first movie sells 5566/1651 for 7,217.

Durarara!! BD box sells a respectable 4,448.
22) ¥*178.9m (*8,520 * ¥21,000) - Koukaku Kidoutai S.A.C. 2nd GIG (2 parts: 4,321 + 4,199)
23) ¥*163.5m (*4,448 * ¥36,750) - Durarara!!
24) ¥*149.3m (*5,689 * ¥26,250) - Kamichu!

Macross BD Box sells 2,880.
24) ¥*149.3m (*5,689 * ¥26,250) - Kamichu!
25) ¥*136.1m (*2,880 * ¥47,250) - Choujikuu Yousai Macross
26) ¥*134.9m (*4,942 * ¥27,300) - Serial Experiments Lain

Nothing next week, then Acchi Kocchi and Sengoku Collection the week after.

Is that bad for Berserk? Does it mean chances for the project to go on are really low? ( but considering the money made on theaters and other things like merchandising + the 2 movies to come, what if they did the same or a little bit worse, how would it be )

It's not very good for a movie in general, but without knowing what kind of costs they needed to recoup it's impossible to guess at whether they're breaking even or not. Maybe they are, all other things considered, but honestly, no idea.

Didn't it make tons at the box office? And isn't the Berserk Project just the films? I recall hearing about there being a TV series after the films but nothing was solid or green-lit.

The studio wants to do the whole anime if they can, the project is starting with the films. The continuation of the project depends on the money the trilogy makes. If they do make enough and desire to continue the project, we're gonna see the Black Swordsman arc since even Miura asked them to.
It made 1.3 million at the box office ( last result, third week ) How good is that?
I don't know how much they wasted. For a regular anime episode it takes about 140k dollars, no? But if by any chance the money made in theaters is as much as the money they spent on the trilogy, if the next two movies make as much in theaters it should be pretty good profit. What'd you think?
