Default Re: Spring '12 Check-up

June has come, and with it we're just a few weeks out from the first big flood of spring releases. So how are shows doing?

Initially the top titles were: Haiyore! Nyaruko-san, Accel World, Hyouka, and Eureka Seven AO. Things are similar but there's been some shake-up. (Note, this isn't really in order after the first two)

Nyaruko-san still has the highest point total at 7375, an estimate around 9000, and an average rank of #64. But it's gone from having 53% of its time in the Top 50 to 28%, and while average ranking through 5/04 was #40, it's been #76. Which is still very good, and this is still quite likely to be the best seller of the season (especially since it only has one cour of sales attrition to worry about), but it cooled down from its initial temperature, which is pretty normal. It is still the only Spring series to hit the Top 10, besides a very brief stint by AKB and a somewhat longer one by Lupin. It should also have enough DVD sales to rank which will give it an edge over shows like Hyouka.

Hyouka, however, has been the top show for most of the time since I first did the Spring checkup. Up to 5/04 when I first posted, Hyouka averaged a rank of #114. From 5/05 to now it's had an average rank of #58 and its overall average just nudges Nyaruko-san out at #63. Right now it's peaking at #19, which is its best ever, even better than the initial surge of preorders when it was first solicited. What's amusing is that this spike comes after the onsen episode - an onsen episode where there was more fanservice of the male protagonist than any of the girls, and not very much of either, in KyoAni fashion. Overall, Hyouka has upped its "Top 100" percentage from 43% when I first posted, to 76% now, and it's been in the Top 100 for 100% of the time from 5/05 to now.
Right now Hyouka is at 4614 points (second highest of Spring) with about 7300 predicted, but as usual, those predictions are not good at handling significant shifts in rankings, so it could easily be more.

Eureka AO just recently gave up its 2nd place of spring for point totals to Hyouka, but the shift had been clear for a while. It averaged #69 through 5/04 but #100 since, and #128 in the past week. It has 4396 points with a 5400 estimate; since it hasn't fluctuated hugely, that could be accurate but I expect a little more.

Accel World has seen a steady decline, though still decent rankings. Back on 5/04 it had been Top 100 for 31% of the time, but that's dropped to 23% since. Average rank since 5/05 has been #180 compared to #136 before. Total points are 3444 with a 5200 estimate.

Saki Achiga-hen was not a top tier contender initially, but it's made progress recently. However, most of that progress came after an event ticket was announced for v1, so we cannot use v1 sales to predict 2+. Still, it's at an all-time high of #28 right now. Its average was #334 through 5/04 but #146 since and #83 in the past week. Current points are 2873 with a 4000 estimate, but since much of its growth is recent, the estimate could be low. Much too hard to predict this one accurately right now.

Sakamichi no Apollon has been a bit of a dark horse. It was solicited late so its average through 5/04 isn't too meaningful (#227) but it's flirted with good rankings here and there. Overall it's still only averaging #275 though. The bumps it gets after each episode don't last long, but right now Stalker has 1486 points with a 5000 average. However, it doesn't come out until the end of July so it's as premature to guess as it was for late June releases back in early May.

Kuroko no Basuke is another dark horse. It had a #777 average back on 5/04 but that's shot up to #210 since then and #184 in the past week. What makes it a possible surprise though is that unlike most shows it should sell as much or more on DVD as BD, so given that it doesn't come out until late July, it has a lot of potential to go significantly past 5k.

AKB0048 wasn't solicited back on 5/04, but has been up and down since then. It had an average rank of #40 from 5/06 to 5/15 and a peak of #8, but it dropped out of the Top 100 after that. From 5/16 to present it's averaged #193. However just in the past day it started seeing its best ranking since the first week, and is currently #34. It's a June release though, with less than 2 months between solicit and street date so if it's going to be a top seller it needs to really start piling on the sales in these last few weeks.

Lupin is a very late solicitation and a straight-to-box release so it can't be compared sensibly to the others. Still, it's started strong, and averaged #25 in its first week. But Stalker awards less points per rank to high priced items for a reason, so with no release until mid September this could as well be a 2k seller as a 20k... it's impossible to tell.

We of course can still know nothing about Tsuritama, Natsu-iro Kiseki or Kimi to Boku. 2 due to the Aniplex/Amazon issue, though based on KtB's s1 sales, we can safely write that one off. Tsuritama is doing enough DVD sales to at least rank but not much more. In general, only a couple Spring shows will rank consistently on DVD unless they come out in slow weeks.

And as for Sengoku Collection, well, all signs still point to the rare card pack-in bonus. For the bonus you just need to buy v1-2, and you can see the drop after v2 pretty clearly:
***,*58位 ○(**3,087pt) 2012年06月06日 戦国コレクション Vol.01 [DVD]

*11,246位 ★(***,128pt) 2012年08月29日 戦国コレクション Vol.05(Blu-ray Disc)

And so on. I wonder if they'll introduce another rare card for later volumes? I mean heck why not...? It ought to work for at least a couple more volumes, though I doubt it'd guarantee v1-like sales for all 12. Diminishing returns and all that.

But at least it will be able to claim best v1 DVD sales of Spring 2012!

Quite large second weeks for the Aniplex titles hit by the Amazon dispute - Nise, Persona, Durarara. Nise in particular has a much better second week than v1, I guess as the small restocking at Amazon takes hold or people look elsewhere.
Thursday threshold gets pretty low so some shows that wouldn't otherwise make it get in and Nise charts a 6th time.

Spring update:
KoreZom 2 v1 adds 431 BDs, total 3,192.

Winter update:
Symphogear v3 sells 3504/679 for 4,183.

Danshi Koukousei v3 takes another big tumble, down to 1071/765 for 1,836. It's now down 50% from v1 after only 3 volumes. 3.7k > 2.5k > 1.8k.

Nisemonogatari v2 has a better second week than v1, adding 4818/1107 for 56,703. That closes the gap with v1 by 2000 units. Now it's only down 7.8% from where v1 was at this point.
v1 adds 392 in wk6, total 63,992.

InuBoku v3 adds 759/1059, total 11,218. Same BD number as v3 wk2.

HS DxD v3 adds 692/378, total 9,844. With monthly adjustments it should hold over 10k for three volumes. It'll take insane consistency to get a 10k average, but it's possible.

Natsume Shi v4 adds 515/591, total 9,162. It might not get 10k like the first three seasons but it's still staying very consistently above 9k.

Aquarion Evol v2 adds 658 BDs, total 7,830.

AnoNatsu v3 adds 745 BDs, total 6,355.

Fall update:
Tamayura v6 sells 3760/748 for 4,508. Up slightly on v5 wk1

Shana III v6 sells 2710/1121 for 3,831, up 8.8% on v5 wk1.

Persona 4 v7 adds 2073/947 for 24,806. Biggest wk2 since v1.

Horizon v6 adds 2108 BDs, total 19,560. Smallest second week by a good margin, so it just misses 20k but should get it or nearly so next week.

Haganai v5 adds 763/338, total 10,749.

Guilty Crown v5 adds 938/342 for 7,543. Maybe it's started to bottom out.

Sekai-ichi 2 v6, final volume, adds 874, total 3,935. Final average 4,007.

Kimi to Boku v6, final volume, adds 314 DVDs, total 1,196. Final average, 1,210 DVDs, BDs never ranked.

Past seasons:
Gintama' v11 adds 1340 for 11,526.

Penguindrum v8, final volume, adds 379 BDs, total 4,877, final average 5,244.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Berserk first movie adds 920/891, total 9,028.

Durarara!! BD box has a good second week, adding 1197 for 5,645.
17) ¥*209.1m (*9,959 * ¥21,000) - Koukaku Kidoutai Stand Alone Complex (2 parts: 5,165 + 4,794)
18) ¥*207.5m (*5,645 * ¥36,750) - Durarara!!
19) ¥*207.4m (*6,172 * ¥33,600) - s-CRY-ed

Next week, Acchi Kocchi and Sengoku Collection.

Default Newtype May-June rankings

http://jbbs.livedoor.jp/bbs/read.cgi...1293278942/426

Newtype monthly (slightly different reporting period than Oricon) adds the following in weeks starting 5/21, 5/28, 6/04, and 6/11.

Horizon v6 adds 230 BDs, total 20,231. Final average: 21,536.

Haganai v6 adds 226 BDs, total 10,975.

HS DxD v3 adds 186 BDs, total 10,030.

iDOLM@STER v6 adds 380 BDs, total 8,153 standalone, 24,823 total with G4U. Final average: 25,459.

Was hoping it would extend to 6/18 so we could get Mouretsu v4 3rd week sales. But Oricon's next monthly should cover weeks starting 6/04-6/25 so it should be on there for 3rd and maybe even 4th week, if it was still being tracked then.

Pretty crazy how consistent the show has been over three volumes. Definitely agree about the insane consistency.

Vol. 4 BD/DVD combined, right now, Stalker estimates 7679 total with two and a half weeks to go. Possible to get near 9K and possibly 10K with adjustments.

Default Amazon 2012 1st Half Anime Ranking

Amazon 2012 1st Half Anime Ranking

01) Kidou Senshi Gundam UC v4
02) Fate/Zero Part 1
03) Nisemonogatari v1
04) Bakemonogatari BD Box
05) Nisemonogatari v2
06) Tiger & Bunny v9
07) Toradora! BD Box
08) Tiger & Bunny v8
09) Persona 4 v2
10) Steins;Gate v9

All are LE BDs. Aniplex pulls in half of the top 10, but don't expect to see that in a second half ranking with the way things are going. Of interest is that Nisemonogatari v2 still made it - a lot of the orders must have gone in before it was pulled, so this might indicate we haven't seen the full extent of the impact of Amazon pulling them until later volumes. I guess it is worth noting that v2 is only down -11.39% on v2, thanks to a big second week, and only down -7.77% from where v1 was at the same point. But I expect it would be a lot closer if Amazon had it fully stocked.

On a side note, still waiting on those Oricon mid-year rankings, even if the threshold will be really high and we'll probably only see a couple dozen discs listed max, with a threshold over 10k, maybe even 15k for BD. Unless we get lucky and Oricon publishes an anime-specific Top 50 BD or something..

Slow week. Much ado about almost nothing for SenColle (under 3k even with the rare card, so basically what I expected) and Acchi Kocchi does as miserably as I expected (even with the v1 event ticket).
Horizon keeps to 20k, by the slimmest of margins - 1 copy and last ranked place.

Spring update:
SenColle v1 sells 930/2037 for 2,967. Expect about the same for v2, and then to drop drastically after the required purchases fr the bonus card thing are over.

Acchi Kocchi v1 sells 1368/640 for 2,008. I guess this makes me part of an elite few? ...Or just someone buying a show nobody else is buying, but hey, it happens.

Winter update:
Mouretsu v4 sells 6516 BDs and v7 DVD (which matches the second half of the BD disc) sells 291, total 6,807. Another 400-500 or so next week and it'll keep its 7k streak. There were minor stock issues at Amazon once again, but only for a day or two.

Amagami SS+ v3 sees a bump to 3631/1030 for 4,661, its best first week sales. Ai is strong. Well, as strong as 4.6k can be I guess.

PapaKiki v3 DVD sells 347 DVDs and v4 sells 2464 BDs. Due to the episode count distribution and release dates, I count v3 DVD with v4 BD so the total is 2,811. One more of each to go, in July.

Kill Me Baby v4 actually ranks on DVD, a first for the show, with 721/293. Shock! It hit 1k combined with 1,014!

Danshi Koukousei v3 adds 385 DVDs thanks to the low threshold, total 2,221.

Nisemonogatari v2 adds 1399 BDs, total 58,102, only down 9.2% on v1's total now. Double the third week BD number of v1, though v1 had a very small third week on DVD. But it was obviously gonna be BDs catching up for Nise.

Fall update:
Persona 4 v7 adds 804 BDs, total 25,610. Biggest wk3 since v1, like wk2.

Horizon v6 adds 441 BDs in wk3 for 20,001. . So far every volume has hit 20k.

Past seasons:
Gintama' v11 adds 469 for 11,995. Best sales since v5 but it's all really consistent from 2+.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Gundam UC v5 obviously dominates everything with 99162/46287 for 145,449.

Toshokan Sensou BD box moves only 631 copies, sheesh. Was it already released on BD before this? [Update: Yes it was, 2010-12-22 but it didn't rank because of the typically high holiday thresholds.]

Nothing next week, but the week after we start Saki Achiga-hen, Nyaruko-san, Eureka AO, Zetman, and Hiiro no Kakera, then nine more the week after that. Hope Saki can still score a second week...

Huh. I wonder if the extra card for Sengoku Collection was an Amazon exclusive? That would explain how the stalker had double the amount of DVD points than it ended up. Either way though, it's clear that I was wrong in saying it was a result of trolling.

Glad to see Pirates remains consistent and hopefully it can break 7k with its second week since I believe it's a pretty slim week next? I know that it may look like the dramatic rise for Saki corresponds to the event ticket announcement, but a more optimistic reasoning (as far as hopefully not a big drop between vol. 1 and 2) could be that it also corresponds to the much hyped semi-final match against Shiraitodai. This was when I was personally expecting the sales to spike because everything up until that point was just a precursor. That's just something we'll have to wait and see though.

I remain to be pretty pessimistic overall about this season. But maybe a few last spurts for several shows (Sankarea/MGX/Tasogare) could finish strong or maybe Natsuiro Kiseki ends up with a surprising amount of sales (Sphere has a lot of fans after all). Or maybe it'll just turn out that the stalker underestimated some of these shows. As it is now, I don't think it'll match up to winter in terms of median sales.

EDIT: And as a side note, I'm glad I can visit this thread again. Google warning me that this was a reported dangerous site had me worried a bit.

It's interesting to note that the season after Bakemonogatari aired was also a bit middling in terms of median sales. The only real stick-out success from that season was Railgun, with a lot of low-average shows. It wouldn't surprise me if fans are taking a little break after some really successful seasons. I know that I personally am very tempted to do the same (and may still end up doing that).
