Default K-ON! Movie discussion thread

It's a movie! About K-ON!

That's all the introduction you need.

Thoughts in a reply when I'm done watching.

Default Re: K-ON! Movie discussion thread

I'm only five minutes into the movie and I'm laughing my ass off. The pre-title sequence was absolute gold. Epic argument between Yui and Ritsu, while Azunyan just watches with amusing reactions... then she finds the tapedeck and realizes they were doing the instrument equivalent of lyp-syncing. And naturally, as Azunyan gets reading to join in practice, she gets Mugi'd.

It was tempting to do a running commentary style post of this.... but my posts already get rather long when I do those, and it can add a lot of time just to a ~22 minute TV episode. So for a nearly 2 hour movie.... I wanted to at least have a *chance* of finishing it in less than four hours. And it still took me over 20 minutes to get to the 8 minute mark.

.... And then it actually did take me nearly 4 hours to finish it. (And then another 30 minutes to finish making this post.) But not because I was bored or didn't like it. Faaaaaar from it. I only ever mildly liked the TV seasons. I loved Azunyan, but the show was very hit and miss in terms of entertainment. But this movie. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. It has single handledly raised my feelings on the franchise as a whole from "like decently well" to "LOOOOOOVE".

There were far, far, far too many things to comment on individually. I guess the highlight in sheer hilarity and entertainment was the sushi bar scene. So much hilarity and awesomeness squeezed into a single scene. Especially Mugi making sure they had a keyboard for her. Never, ever keep any hopes of Mugi helping you out of a pinch. She's in it for the lulz. Always.

Azunyan calling her parents and then walking back into the room to find everyone else on the phone and asking for permission and her reaction was definitely on of the individual punchline highlights.

The whole "Azunyan is missing" bit in the hotel was comedy gold. And the everything with Azunyan and Yui on the airplane, particularly the English part. "I understand!" "Azu-catto!" "No Japanesu!"

And the line that officially gives the K-On! movie the Best Attempts to Speak "English" Dialogue by Japanese Characters award: "She is no panties!"

I found Mugi's "Too fast!" in response to the hotel clerk's lines particularly hilarious in light of something's comment here.

Alas, the movie also contained a tragedy. Azunyan said THOSE words. The most horrible of lines. "I'm not into that kind of thing" when Yui looked like she was trying hug/smooch/begin foreplay with Azunyan. It was somewhat mitigated by the hilarity of Azunyan elbowing Yui like she would to a mugger or attempted rapist, but its still a tragedy. ;_;

And I was horribly disppointed they didn't actually sing the song in English. What we heard of their translation was.... amazing. It would have been one of the most amazing songs of all time.

Also... how in the hell did they make that flight!?!? WTF? Performance at 4 and a flight at 5.... there is absolutely no way in hell they could have made that flightn. None. Zero. Zilch. Nada. They needed to be in the airport already when they we first getting on stage.

Anyway, ummmm, uh.... fuck it, I can't figure out a good way to make a nice, organized post out of this. A few other notable amusing or cute moments:

Mugi's little shrug when Yui looks at her after hearing the melody she made was sooooo adorable. Cutest Mugi moment in the entire franchise? Very likely so.

I like how Yui made a point of "I didn't tell Ui either!" when the other were making sure she didn't tip off Azunyan at some point.

And Jun was pretty blunt. "You're senpai are weird." Azunyan's awkward pause as she considered that maybe they were just hiding treats and concluded that it was actually a plausible, possible explanation was hilarious.

Loooooved Ui noticing Yui's little lyric notebook and figuring out what was going on and how she handled that, both in the room with Yui and her message to Azunyan. Ui, you are the best onee-imouto-chan ever.

And those last 25 minutes, especially the class performance and the stuff with the teacher*, and then an alternate take on the final farewell song to Azunyan. I loved seeing those scenes of the girls practicing, particularly the solos.

Anyway. Movie was AMAZING. Would gladly watch again.

*Random awesome little touch: When it switches from Sawa hanging on the teacher to slow him down to the shot of the outside of the school and pans up, you can see the two occult girls running down the hallway of the floor above Sawa.

Also, amusingly, I finished watching the movie almost exactly when something made this thread.

Edit: Oh right, the end credits! .... LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE. Might be my favorite, though its been quite a while since I saw/heard any of the TV endings.

Default Re: K-ON! Movie discussion thread

And this post will be longer than is remotely reasonable or readable. Whelp, here goes!

K-ON! Movie:

- A very familiar opening scene! ...Love the throwback to the first scene of season one.

- Suddenly, heavy metal K-ON! HAH, amazing.
- Muuuuuuuugiiiiiii! You are the best. Seriously. Headbanging ojou-sama!
- Creative differences. The possible dissolution of HTT. Oh no!
- Yui is cracking me the hell up in this scene. She wants tio turn them into Death Devil, essentially. And she's trying to be all serious about her "musical ambitions" and such while agreeing to take Azu-nyan up on playing cards (but, after she's debated musicianship!)
- There's a little bit of context-setting with an eye towards first time viewers going on. Ritsu is recapping Yui's eccentricities while yelling ta her.
- Hahaha oh god. They weren't really playing. They were faking it to a recording. Well that's so like them. It was too professional for HTT.
- "Azusa-chan, now that you're here... ...let's have some tea!" Heh. Yes, this opening scene introduces who HTT is pretty clearly.

- Now for the OP, Ichiban Ippai! It's adorable. Yui, you are much too cute.
- Baumkuchen! Azusa is so tsundere for tea time.
- Mugi can't open the baumkuchen package? Mugi the superwoman? Then no mere mortal can do it.
- Haha and she finally gets it after much struggle.
- All the little details are goddamned amazing so far, as you'd expect. So many little movements, so cute, so detailed, so awesome.
- Setting the time: before graduation but after they've all beeen accepted into the same college.

- Sawa-chaaaaaaaan! <3 I like her more and more because she's become my favorite character to pair Mugi off with.
- Awwwwww... Yui feels like they haven't been very senpai-like. They dcide they want to do something for Azunyan, and thus start on what will become Tenshi ni Fureta yo.
- But Yui needs some guidance before getting there. So it's UI TIIIIIME! BEST IMOUTO EVER.
- Heh. Ui suggests one gift could be staying back a year to graduate with Azunyan. Ui, I'm pretty sure that'd be a gift for you first and foremost...

- Next morning, back to school. Yui meets Mugi and holds hands with her on the way. =D
- Awww! Himeko! She gets to talk to Yui! It must be her dream come true. Hell, Yui notes that she's there early and Himeko says "I only get to see you all on a school day after all." But she totally wanted to say that to just Yui!
- Yayyyy, a bunch of the extras are getting some more lines.
- The class also talks about doing something for Sawa-chan. Gah, I'm so gonna need to rewatch the last few episodes again after this for all the awesome stuff they're alluding to.

- The girls trying to hide their plans from Azunyan is hilarious.
- And they decide where to go on their graduation trip by... putting four teacups in Ton-chan's tank and letting him pick. o_O
- London it is! YATTA MIO is cutest Mio!
- Heh, they tell Azusa to come along too. She holds out a but, but it doesn't take that much convincing.
- She phones up her mom to ask permission. Then all the other girls do the same. Azusa realizes they decided this without even asking their parents.

- Nodokaaaaaa! Too bad you can't go too. And Ui. And Jun-chaaaaaaan! But if I had my way the entire cast would go and that would be... unwieldy.
- Travel agency. Guide books. Time to get serious.

- Back at school, and Yui runs into the Occult Club! <3
- The're so giggly. And I love how they call Yui "Keionbu-san".

- Azusa has ttoally taken over trip planning. She leaves a bit early and the girls spend more time wondering what they should do for her. Everything except MUSIC crosses their mind.
- Until Muttan speaks! Yes, it's all up to Azusa's guitar to tell them what they should be doing.
- Azunyan grows more and more suspicious.

- Preparing the luggage. And holy shit, Hirasawa-mama! And she talks!
- Dad too! But we don't see their faces, heh. It's so weird seeing anyone living here other than Yui and Ui.
- Haha, Yui want a carry-on Ui. And oh hey, mom's face! From the side.
- And now we see both of them from a modest distance.

- Yui meets up with the girls. She brought Gitah. Azunyan brings Muttan. Mio brings Elizabeth. Mio's shy blushes are deadly. Deadly, you hear me! Poor Ricchan and Mugi can't bring their larger instruments. ;_;
- Oh hah, Ricchan brought her drumsticks. I was hoping she would. But what about Mugi? ;_;
- Yes! It's Mugi in her hat and scarf that we saw in a bunch of the PVs. So cute!
- This makes me feel sooooo warm and fuzzy. Watching someone on an automatic walkway has never been so fun.

- Seating arrangements. Mugi gets window, Ritsu in the middle, Mio on the aisle. Behind them, Yui at the window, Azunyan on the aisle.
- HBWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHA "Azunyan, we can't speak Japanese from here on. [in english] Okay?" "...I understand." "Azu-cat." Oh fucking hell, she says it so seriously and I just totally lost it. Hoooly shit why was that so hilarious? I think my brain is fried. Goddamn. XD
- And then more English practice. I love Yui's "Excellent".

- Night time on the plane. Time to focus on some YuiAzu. I really, really like the "what can we do for Azusa?" theme running through this. In part because of the emotional resonance that has, since we've seen the end of the second season. And in part because the silly misunderstandings are hilarious.
- They're there! Customs. Azunyan tells Yui to say "sightseeing". Yui says "side business".
- ...Oh god, poor Mio. This is so something that would happen to her. Lost luggage! Thankfully, it wasn't Elizabeth.
- Bwhahaha, oh Mugi. "Mio doesn't wear any [panties], right?" In your fantasies, at least! And then Yui's "Yes! She is nopan!"

- And now they're on the ground and out of the airport. And thankfully, KyoAni bothered to get real Brits to do the English.
- Oh man I love the BGM playing right now. I totally need to start listening to the OST for this that I bought ages ago and refused to listen to until I'd seen the movie.
- (Also, the girls are totally heading to the wrong hotel.)
- And Yui's first trip in a London cab almost ends badly, but she's saved by Mugi's soft and lovely thighs.

- Yep, wrong hotel. The nice receptionist doesn't sound as native speaker as the cab driver, but i actually can't tell if it's a Japanese person with a really really good accent, or a native speaker being told to speak unusually slowly and deliberately for Japanese audiences.
- Down to the subway they go! Or the Underground, whatever.
- Awww. Azusa is wearing new shoes so with all the walking her feet hurt. Time to go clothes shopping!
- New shoes or Azusa, and then... sushi! Mugi is having her first conveyor-belt sushi, in London.

- ...Oh god. So apparently a Japanese band just happened to book this sushi house that day. And the manager mistakes HTT for them.
- Ffffffffff please play please play please play.
- lol, Mugi oes over to object... ...that there's no keyboard. Hah.
- Ricchan tries. ...Well, she tries.
- HAAAAHAHA I adore Yui so much. She's totally at a loss to what to play until she sees an Indian man. The second he popped up, you knew it would be Curry Nochi Rice.
- And it's a hit! International superstars! "RICE!" Fuuuuuuuck I'm going to kill myself laughing at some of these scenes.
- So who was the band that was actually supposed to perform? Love Crisis. MAKI-CHAN! Hahaha.

- Finally we arrive at the right hotel! Rooming arrangements match seating arrangements. Maaaan, Mugi is going to have such fun pretending to be asleep while Mitsu-sexxing goes on.
- Bwhaha, Yui falls victim to differing voltage standards. You forgot dads advice about the converter!
- And Azunyan has strange dreams. Maaaaan, her calling Yui just "Yui" without "-senpai" feels as wrong to me as it must to her. Yui-senpai is Yui-senpai!
- Azunyan love! Yui writes love letters to her Azunyan. =D

- Insert song - Unmei wa Endless!
- Gah such awesome scenery art.
- They couldn't have afternoon tea. It needed a reservation. ;_;
- Azunyan thinks Yui is hitting on her. She may say she's not into that, but her flusteredness speaks otherwise! Don't fight it, Azunyan!! Nobody is fooled! You least of all.
- Awwwwww, she feels so bad for misunderstanding. ANd then Yui sings her a lullabye which puts herself to sleep in about 5 seconds. Heh.
- Azunyan wakes up to no Yui-senpai!
- Yui-senpai returns back to no Azunyan!
- ...I need more of sleepy Azunyan. I looooove sleepy Azunyan.
- Bwhahaha, they keep going around in circles just missing each other. XD

- Azunyan eating toast angrily. <3 <3
- Azu-nyan-nyan-nyan ♪ ♪
- The songn is all Yui can think about.

- Then suddenly, a call from Kawakami-san at the live house back in Japan. She wants to book HTT for a London gig!
- ...Discussing communications technology and its relevance to "time travel" with Yui. My head hurts.
- At Yui's (and then Mugi's) prompting, they agree to the gig. Yay! Except it starts an hour before they're supposed to be at the airport. Talk about cutting it close.
- Oh god, Yui is trying to translate Gohan wa Okazu into English. All the girls are joining in.

- Wow. Mugi has her keyboard shipped overnight from Japan. Hoooooooooly shit I cannot imagine what it would cost for something that enormous.
- Time for the Japan culture expo thingy! Love Crisis and Black Frill are performing at the indoor stage, HTT gets the outdoor one.
- Yui is sscared to plug Gitah in after the hair dryer meltdown.
- But, SUDDENLY, SAWA-CHAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!! YES!
- And she's brought costumes!
- KUNOICHI NODOKA! TOO CUTE!
- AND UI! AND JUUUUUUUUN! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
- But Ricchan-buchou rejects the costumes. Awww.
- The tail end of Fuwa Fuwa time, and their mini concert ends with a tweaked Gohan wa Okazu. Fun fun fun!
- Yui finally realizes, after looking at Azunyan's angelic sleeping face, that they should just do a song like they always do. Good call, even if you were the last one to realize it, Yui.

Still about 30 minutes left!

- And back in Japan. Nodoka receives a lifetime supply of tea.
- The class is excited to hear about the girls' London live. Ichigo even speaks! <3 <3
- Everyone wants them to go one last concert. Himeko specially requests it. Himeko I love yooouuuuuuuu~! And Nobuyo suggest a live in the classroom. It's like Utauyo Miracle for real! Holy shit! YESSSSSS!

- Heh, asking permission from Sawa-chan. She has to play the professional teacher... and allows it anyway.
- Jun! Finally speaking lines for Jun!
- And the concert day arrives! Sawa-chan nervously keeps watch for other teachers as the class has the time of their lives. Youko snaps commemorative photos of Mio, heh.
- Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck that was awesome! I love love love love love U&I, and Yui jumping off the desks and into the crowd was perfect. Absolutely one of the best concert scenes of the franchise. the energy of having their classmates mere feet away, treating them like rock stars, totally puts it over the top and makes it so much more fun.

20 minutes. Time to wind down, probably.

- Finishing up Tenshi ni Fureta yo. Mugi composed the music (adorable musical genius that she is!) which it seems like she is often in charge of. I just love how it's shown - you don't hear anything, you just see the "oh wow this... is amazing" look on Yui's face, and the t he bashful little grin from Mugi... MUGIIIIIIIII!!!!!!! <3
- This brings tears to my eyes, knowing what an absolutely beautiful scene it ends up creating. It's so very moving seeing how important Azunyan is to them. <3

- Speaking of Azunyan, table tennis with Jun!
- Heh, Azunyan is soooooooo suspicious.

- I'm guessing it's Yui's lyrics they went with, since the notebooks match. Though I suppose they mixed and matched.
- Awww. Ui sees the lyrics and realizes what's up. And Yui thanks her for everything... a lovely sisterly moment.
- Up to the last minute, still unsure of the lyrics. So it went from "kitten" to "angel" at some point.
- "Hey Ricchan, do you think we can do this well? I've never been this nervous before.' Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Even performing on short notice in front of strangers half a world away isn't as nerve-wracking as trying to express the extent of her love for Azunyan. <3
- This... this scene... it's just amazing. Shiiiiiit man, the trip to London was just a side show. This whole movie is about writing Tenshi ni Fureta yo and I cannot think of a more beautiful, perfect think for it to be about. ALL OF MY LOVE. ALL OF MY LOVE.

- Sawa-chan with the class present. She can't take her eyes off of it.
- OHMYGODYES! they're doing a movie version of it! Oh wow I am SO happy they did this, I've been wondering if they would for the last hour and a half! Having it as the climax of the movie (rather than having to finish the movie, sit through the rock-out ED, then go find the episode and skip to the scene) gives it so much more emotional impact.

And then Yui flies off into the future. Keep going, girls! Never stop! SEASON THREE! SEASON THREE! SEASON THREE!!!

Singing is awesome holy shit. I'd heard the song before but I looove the visuals. Bikini top Mugi! Too sexy! My eyes!

The most perfectly K-ON! movie ever. I could not possibly have asked for anything better. Totally beyond my expectations, and hands down one of the best movies I've ever seen.

Just absoluetly goddamned brilliant on every imaginable level possible for a piece of art.

May K-ON! never, ever, ever die.

No no, you must have faith. She didn't mean it! She's just unsure of how to react to Yui-senpai, since the latter is always so flighty and unserious about everything. ::nods::

If not it's damn well tied. So much wrapped up in that little moment. Mugi might not get the spotlight like the other girls, but as the most musically experienced member she's such a critical support for everyone else.

I can't decide which ED is my favorite. They're all so damn good. Don't say "lazy", No Thank You, Listen, and now Singing. Singing is a really incredible song though, make sure you grab the full version.

It was an outstanding movie, and I hope that it leads to a bit more of K-On! being animated. ^_^

I always love recognizing places that I've been to in anime, which doesn't happen too often. I've been to London a handful of times, and it was neat seeing the area around the London Eye, and watching the girls shop at a Waitrose store that I've been to a couple of times (it's right next to the Gloucester Road Tube station, and almost across the street from a hotel that I've stayed at a few times).

All of the stuff after London, with music for the class and Azusa was beautiful, and brought tears to my eyes... ;_;

Wow... I'll probably watch it again in a few days, while I wait for a copy that I won't understand to arrive on my doorstep..

When your copy of the LE BD arrives, check the chords. The LE BD arrives with 4 chords of Tenshi ni Fureta yo (one for each person). I didn't want to spoil the movie in the BD thread, so I purposefully left that portion vague even though the official listing gave it away.

I'm glad to see you enjoyed it immensely. As international fans (especially in a franchise that didn't have a single international showing that I'm aware of), it's difficult to remain enthusiastic for a movie nearly 2 years after it was first announced. Yes, this movie was announced on September 28, 2010 and released in a format we could see on July 18, 2012. 660 days is a long time to wait for a film less than 2 hours long, but when you enjoy a franchise, it's worth every minute of the wait.

Hmm... Not that it was how they got there, but Google Maps says that it's 3.7 miles / 12 minutes from the London Eye to Paddington Station. From there, they could catch the Heathrow Express train, which leaves every 15 minutes and take 15 minutes to get to terminals 1-3 (4 is a smidgen farther along). Google Maps says 30 or 39 minutes from London Eye to Heathrow by car on two routes (M4/A4 or A40, respectively), but that's probably not factoring in likely afternoon traffic at all. ^^; Heh... Google provides a warning for both routes:

That's weird. The forum software is determined to separate the tolls line from the other two. I post it as one block of text, and every time I preview it, the software splits it into two quotes. When I edit it back together, the software splits it, again. ^^;;

Oh, well...

To get weirdly anecdotal about some of this, back in February, during one of my trips into London, I figured it'd be an amusing idea to (completely free of the context of knowing how they were used in the movie) visit a few of the locations marked out on a Japanese location map. It probably helped that I was staying in the Southbank area (as I have on many an occasion, since the BFI is in the area), and was heading to Earls Court anyway. Much more time efficient.

This was, of course, back when the movie was still A Thing in Japan. This results in me having a certain extra amusement from watching the movie - I actually saw quite a few Japanese tourists in the Earls Court area taking photographs of things which seemed kind of odd at the time, but now make perfect sense.

Was also kind of amused by the purpose of the visit to Camden, given when I visited a couple of very nasty blisters that'd developed due to my poor footwear decided to burst at that point (Worlds End, where the bench from the movie poster is, was a pretty long walk...).

The sad thing is that, even by the time the movie opened in Japan, Jubilee Gardens, where HTT played their London farewell gig, had been dug-up for pre-Olympics renovation. It'd re-opened when I was back for the BFI anime weekend in May, but it also looks pretty much completely different to what it does in the movie. Not that they didn't take a few liberties around County Hall anyway (there's a couple of shops missing infront of the London Eye, and the area is never that quiet in the half-decent weather displayed in the movie, and the area populated by the E4 Udderbelly if you look on Googlemaps has been turned in the a carpark extension).

Mostly, though, I was just kind of weirded out by the fidelity of the recreation of places I've actually been to before - it's strange to be able to apply real-world knowledge to this stuff.

Oh god this movie. I don't have the epic walls of text like certain other posters, but...basically everything they said.

I think my favorite part, other than the Tenshi ni Fureta Yo scene, is during the classroom concert, when Yui and Azusa turn towards each other and just play riffs at each other for a minute, for those few moments, its just the two of them, communicating with their music. And then later Yui turns towards her again, and directs several lines of lyrics directly at her.

Azusa, listen to what she's trying to tell you. Please. ;_;
