Bright Stream seems to be leading at the moment due to the fact that you get not only the Nanoha A's movie theme, but also the Dog Days' OP "Fearless Hero"
Bright Stream has been ahead of it all week, so yeah it's guaranteed to sell more.

Really huge second week for Kuroko brings it to almost 17k.
Big Thursday again, plus a DVD too.

Spring update:
Acchi Kocchi v3 is up in both formats, again. Barely. 1438/754 for 2,192, up 1.9% on v2. First weeks have been: 2008 > 2152 > 2192. Not good, but at least it's going upward... v1 had a wk2 in both formats due to exceptionally low thresholds (under 300 each) that week.

KuroBas v1 adds 1731/2427 to total 16,768.

Accel World v1 adds 753 BDs, total 9,891. So close to 10k. Maybe next week?

Hyouka v2 adds 1032 BDs for 9,178 total. 3.2% up on v1 wk2, and almost exactly the same amount in wk2 itself (30 less). Very promising so far, for v2 to sell the same as v1. It'll drop eventually, but at least it's not starting right away like with other shows. Now if it can just get a third week like v1 it should be higher total.

Nyaruko-san v2 adds 727 BDs for 7,516 total. Down 15.7% on v1.

Saki Achiga adds 654 BDs, total 5,372. Half the wk2 of v1, but ah well. Down 18% from v1 BD total. Not too terrible a drop for an event ticket and artbox in v1. It can still average 5k if it stays really consistent. Monthly adjustments wont hurt.

Winter update:
Amagami SS+ v5, for Sae, sells 2758/735 for 3,493. Down 8.3% on v4.

Danshi Koukousei v5 sells 1118/794 for 1,912, down 13.4% on v4.

Kill Me Baby v6, final volume, sells 734. Final average: 993.

Nisemonogatari v4 adds 3889/859 to total 55,843. Maintaining that consistency. Up 0.6% on v3 wk2 total.

AnoNatsu v5 adds 637 BDs, total 6,527. That's with a DVD estimate, but BD total is almost identical to v4. It's been very consistent overall.

Past seasons:
Persona 4 v9 adds 2043/724 for 24,844.

Gintama' v13, final volume, adds 938 for 11,173. Final average is 12,547.

Guilty Crown v7 adds 541 BDs, total 6,599 which is down 8.9% on v6.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
K-ON! Movie adds 1967 BDs and 991/1436 DVDs for 156,862. Growth is going to be pretty slow, and not last too long thanks to high thresholds. But the RE DVDs have finally passed the LE DVDs on a week to week basis (still much less total). Those might have some longevity with the ¥3990 MSRP. DVD thresholds are so high, though, that it might not help much.

HidaSketch BD Box adds 624, total 4,651.
30) ¥*120.4m (*2,509 * ¥48,000) - Saki
31) ¥*117.2m (*4,651 * ¥25,200) - Hidamari Sketch
32) ¥*111.6m (*3,322 * ¥33,600) - Ookami to Koushinryou

Time for the between-season v1 drought. We won't see another until Saint Seiya Omega and Upotte both sell virtually nothing at the end of August.

The professionalism and details of these sales stats are astounding. Very nice and easy to find all the information.

Thank you for creating and keeping these numbers up to date. It was definitely interesting to see what series did well and what not.

Also what do you think are the chances that more space pirate novels will be adapted? will the sales on the upcoming movie be the deciding factor? or are movies not that important compare to series sales?

More Mouretsu specifically? Modestly good I guess. The deciding factors are 1) how the movie does (they do matter, yes) and 2) whether the anime original direction it took at the end (and presumably in the film) makes adapting the rest impossible. Mouretsu is selling well, averaging over 7k, but typical sequel dropoff could take that down to 4k. Since the novels don't seem to have seen a big increase in sales due to the anime (a least not enough to rank on Oricon - maybe they were just selling really low before and percentage-wise they're doing better now) it's unclear is the investment of a whole extra TV series would be "worth" it. But I'd love to see more of course.

Default Re: Summer '12 Checkup

Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon II is still the best guess for top seller of the season. After 1182 hours/50 days recorded, and charting super high for a long time right at the start, it's still got all volumes in the top 100. Average rank for v1 is 19th.

*42位/*44位 ★ (*16,246 pt) [*,105予約] 12/09/21 境界線上のホライゾンII 1
*67位/*65位 ★ (*11,410 pt) [*,*74予約] 12/10/26 境界線上のホライゾンII 2

I still expect Sword Art Online to be #2, and it could give Horizon a run for its money at current pace. Vol. 1 is averaging 13th right now, while Horizon II Vol. 1 averaged 9th or so after the same amount of time (516 hours/21 days). Aniplex is taking the "solicit one at a time" approach with this one, so we only have two listed. Vol. 1 is still a long ways off, coming out almost two months later than Tari Tari and a month after Horizon II.

*15位/*14位 ★ (**7,541 pt) [*,135予約] 12/10/24 ソードアート・オンライン 1
**6位/**5位 ★ (**3,479 pt) [*,*43予約] 12/11/21 ソードアート・オンライン 2

Sheesh, Tari Tari is tearing up the charts the last few days, or last two weeks really. Even since episode 5 I guess. Vol. 1 has an event ticket, but sales are strong across the board so I don't think it'll have a huge impact. It's been up for 1083 hours/45 days and is averaging 135th, but that's been trending up quite a lot. It does come out sooner than most other shows though, so there's only three weeks left.

**7位/**8位 ★ (**3,987 pt) [*,210予約] 12/09/05 TARI TARI 1

Hakuouki Reimeiroku ought to do very well based on past performance, but with DVD being its main format, Amazon probably isn't a helpful guide to predicting sales. The past two seasons averaged 15k and 12k, and the OVA series after them did 14.8k, so even a rather significant drop would put this season at like 8k, and I don't see any particular reason why it would drop. Reimeiroku feels better put together than Hekketsuroku, and much less rushed. I'm curious if the fujoshi target demo prefers the switch to a male protagonist - I'd imagine they do. Hell even I think it works better in some ways, although he's a pretty bland character. Anyway 10k would not be surprising. It should be #3 or #4 of the season unless one of the currently middle of the road performers rockets ahead.

-------------------------

Those three (plus presumably Hakuouki for four) are still head and shoulders above everything else this season.

Oda Nobuna no Yabou may or may not come after these. Vol. 1 comes with an event ticket and drama CD, and the other volumes are hanging out around 300, so I expect Vol. 2+ to drop. Still, 300 isn't bad for later volumes right now and Vol. 1 has been in the top 200 for 240 hours straight, and in the top 100 for 50 of those. This is another early release, like Tari Tari.

Dog Days' might be a better bet than Oda Nobuna long-term. Like SAO it's being solicited piecemeal, so it's not a direct comparison, though. After 615 hours (manually removing the 140 or so hours it was unavailable due to the Amaplex issue), Vol. 1 is average 136th and has spent 82% of its time in the top 200. I don't think it'll sell as much as the first season, but Stalker majorly underestimated it last time, so it's anyone's guess. Fingers crossed, it's the best damn show this season after all.

Muv Luv Alternative Total Eclipse has almost disappeared after its initial run. It's spent the whole month of August averaging only 222nd. Hasn't seen the top 100 since 11am on 8/01. Still I have to imagine it'll sell at least 5-6k, and Accel World showed us that a show can drop considerably after an initial rush and still get almost 10k Vol. 1.

Kokoro Connect was not doing well at all until about when the final episode of Hito Random aired, but has been keeping in the top 200 for Vol. 1 since. Not much movement on Vol. 2+ yet though. But at least it's on an upward trend. Hasn't cracked the top 100 even once, though, with a best of 102.

The only other shows that might put up numbers worth mentioning are Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita, Joshiraku and Yuru Yuri♪♪, but I almost wonder if the latter two are splitting each other's sales, plus Yuru Yuri♪♪ is falling prey to "comedy sequels drop a lot"-itis and will be lucky to sell half what Vol. 1 of the first season sold (and possibly less than half for its overall average, hell maybe as low as 3k, bu hopefully I'm just being pessimistic). Joshiraku might do better, but not by much, at least not based on what we see so far. Jintai could be the best of the three, but hasn't been able to crack the top 200 lately so I honestly don't know what will happen with it.

Everything else is doing pretty crap right now, but that's normal.

Kuroko keeps on marching unstoppably towards 20k. Next week will do it.
No third week for Hyouka or Accel World, despite a low threshold, and Thusrsday only added one title. We'll need to wait for monthly lists to see if Accel World passes 10k, or if Hyouka v2 passes v1.

Spring update:
KuroBas v1 adds 1278/1110 for 19,156.

SenColle v4 sells 1354/728 for 2,082, down 36% on v3. I guess the boost from the bonus cards is over. Checking the official website, it looks like volumes still include cards (so it would likely be dropping even more if not) but the "buy multiple volumes and get special cards" only covered v1-3.

Winter update:
Mouretsu Pirates v6 sells 6,534 BDs. Awww, that breaks the streak of every 1st volume increasing over the last on BD, though it's still higher than v1-v4 and only down 4% on v5. It was also out of stock a few days during release week at Amazon. So much for that issue being over. Maybe next week. Also, just one more volume to go on BD.

Nisemonogatari v4 adds 995 BDs, total 56,838, or 0.3% up on v3. One to go.

Past seasons:
Persona 4 v9 adds 575 BDs for 25,419, or just 0.3% down on v8. One to go.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
K-ON! Movie adds 1060 BDs and 940/649 on DVD in wk4. Total 159,511. It'll hit 160k at least but I'm hoping for 170k given how strong the first week was. Nanoha was still selling double this BD number in wk4 and Haruhi three and a half times in wk4. K-ON! is doing slightly better on DVD at this point thanks to the continued sales of the cheap RE though. I wonder how many weeks it has left. This might be it for LE DVD, but RE DVD might have one more and BD a handful more. Probably about 162-163k and a tiny smattering more with the yearly list, for like 165k. Not that I'm at all disappointed in these incredible sales numbers (34% increase on Nanoha, 15% on Haruhi so far), but right now wk1 accounts for 91% of total sales. It was only 79% for Nanoha and 72% for Haruhi.

Time for the between-season v1 drought. We won't see another until Saint Seiya Omega and Upotte both sell virtually nothing at the end of August.

Default The rental market issue

http://www.cyzo.com/2012/08/post_11175.html via yaraon.

Cyzo is some kind of entertainment magazine, I gather. They have an article on the Japanese bbs "売りスレ" (sales threads) that, from what I can make out, talks about how, despite all the interesting data analysis that goes on, at least one important component is missing: the rental market.

Not news to anyone who follows this stuff closely, but I'm definitely curious whether the article has any specifics. I can't parse it well enough with rikaichan and my meager comprehension to really tell (I don't see a lot of numbers though), other than that it seems to say that the rental market can be several times larger than the home video sales market for some titles. Again, not shocking, but still something to keep in mind when talking about low sales for certain shows.

I doubt the rental market would save an otaku-targeted late-night anime with low sales like Shining Hearts ~Shiawase no Pan~ or MM! but it might be fairly significant percentage-wise for, say... a noitaminA josei adaptation like Natsuyuki Rendezvous or Usagi Drop. I also wonder how something like Kaiji performed at rental.

We'll never really know, of course, just like we'll never know how many copies of Hyouka sell from the KyoAni shop, or other similar situations were untracked stores might be expected to sell a half decent amount. Nonetheless, it's good to acknowledge limitations of the data, and we'll continue to work with what we have.
