Anime Sales in Japan - 2012

About the sales numbers, are we still going to get the normal Tuesday numbers? Does Oricon actually release those themselves? Or are they supposed to be completely hidden and Oricon will go after anyone who posts them? Or are we just looking at posting the full lists later on?

Basically everything for BD is supposed to be hidden, Tuesday data included (I think, like... at best they might reveal top 3, or top 1 rounded to the nearest 1k, on their website; DVD they reveal a little more but not much), so those are at risk as well. However I got confirmation that another Tuesday source at the least will go on - for now - and I am allowed to use that data here if I can't find another source. One of the 2ch boards may still post it too, but Livedoor is toast it looks like.

Thursday full lists and beyond are looking grim unless 2ch finds a way. I've taken some steps to watch as many sources as usual but it's all up in the air. So we may truly be stuck with, say, 3000+ BD thresholds on really busy weeks, and no way to ever find out about stuff that normally would have ranked outside the Top 10 Anime BDs or Top 20 all-genre BDs for the week, i.e. the "update" posts I do in spots 21-50.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. Oricon data has been getting posted for over 5 years now, this surely isn't the first time they've tried suppression. Even if it takes a little while I'm confident another source for full data will pop up before the end of the year.

Adjustments per DVD/BD Wiki. I have to assume this is either the Oricon or Newtype monthly ranking for late July to August , but without a source post at any of the usual places, I can't say for sure what else was on it. It does confirm the Hyouka/Accel World stuff I saw though.

This came out right around when all the issues started so we'll have to wait and see how next month goes. As long as the DVD/BD wiki still has access to the data and isn't pressured to stop posting it, we might be ok. It's just not as convenient to track, for sure.

Gintama' v13 +362 BDs, total 11,535. Final average: 12,575.

Accel World v1 +533 BDs, total 10,424.

Hyouka v2 +632 BDs, total 9,810. Seems very safe to assume v1 is over 10k I'd think (was 9,455 after 3 weeks) with v2 being nearly there, though unfortunately it can't be officially added to the 10k club.

K-ON! Movie +495 LE DVDs, total 162,623.

Well this was bound to happen sooner or later. Having a fee of 90,000 yen per month for the information and then found out that someone posts part of it for free on the Internet is just bad for the business. Even the year resume books cost around 30,000 yens each and those only include month and year numbers.

I guess the biggest hit will be for Blu-Ray releases, since we get only 10 on Tuesday. Specially for the cramped release weeks, it's going to be tough to get data for the slow sale shows. I guess they eventually are going to rise the number of Blu-Ray up to 20 on Tuesday, because the Anime market is slowly shifting to Blu-Ray.

As a question, what does the manabi line means? ^^;;

I think I did something like this before, but since I'm a fan of some shows that have seen or will see significant sequel drops, I wanted to see where they fit among other sequels of recent years.

I did include some things that are more "franchise continuations" than sequels, e.g. Persona or Idolmaster. I know it's not the same as a direct sequel, but I think it's interesting to see how different parts of a franchise can be accepted so differently.

When there was a multi-season show with a spinoff or related series, I compared the original to both direct sequel and spinoff (e.g. Index vs Index II and Index vs Railgun).

And TV series only as usual. Also, uh, I may or may not keep this updated. Depends if I remember.

It's not a complete list, as it's just based my spreadsheet: Everything with at least one season from 2007 to present, with 2006 partially complete, plus any franchise that had at least one entry over 10k since 2000.

It's clear that sequels drop far more often than they increase. I count 26 increases, and 81 decreases. The decreases would be even higher if we added in the low sellers, and unranked sequels, most of which likely dropped too.

So probably 80% or more of anime sequels see a decrease in sales on the previous season, although there's a fair number that dropped less than 20%, which isn't so bad. 80% buyer retention seems respectable to me.

Of note too is that doubling the sales of your predecessor is nearly impossible. If you remove Idolmaster, Persona, Kanon, and Railgun from the above (all spinoffs, remakes, or otherwise not direct sequels) then the only franchises to ever do it in this sample are Initial D (2nd Stage to 4th, 3rd was a movie) and Nanoha (twice!). Aquarion Evol is in line to be next.

The sales (first volume or average, depending on what we're ranking) of Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight.

Through who knows what twists of fate, it came to be seen by the anime sales community as break-even for a typical anime at the time (2007), not counting high budget shows.

I don't think there was ever any particular data backing up the claim, and even if it were true five years ago the break-even is surely higher these days. But it became a very popular fan measurement to ballpark sales success or lack thereof. I think I just retain it through force of habit rather than usefulness.

See also the more recently coined "frt" unit (aka multiples of the sales of Fractale), which is even more clearly nonsensical.
