I see I'm not the only one who sees this as Saki with tanks.
From the little snippet at the beginning, I'm sure we'll get to enjoy some fun tank action later on. For this episode, though, I enjoyed the simple but meaningful friendship developed between Miho and Saori and Hana. And yes, dat ship. |

Just commenting as I watch..
All them movin' parts, and all that loooong hair. This'll lead to cryin'. Does every single one of her teddy bears have a war injury? o.o "Mandatory Electives"... aren't really electives, now, are they? The student council president looks sooo familiar, but I can't place who she reminds me of.. Saori looks like she's gonna be a lot of fun to watch. Love polygons! Man, were they laying it on thick with that propaganda film. (and apparently it had a pretty strong brainwashing effect, too) Hilarious to watch, though. Love the mandatory electives list. Tankery - duh Tea Ceremony, Calligraphy, Flower Arrangement, Archery -- standard stuff Aikido, Long Sword, Ninja (ninja??) -- hmmm Incense - A class on incense? Magic - .... Sweet potato ice cream!?!? Barbarians! O.O The entire city is on the back of some kind of super-carrier? Overall, looks like it could be enjoyable to watch, as it seems to be well aware of the ridiculousness of its own conceit, so is willing to make fun of itself. |

So Miho chooses to go to a school which is supposed to not require girls to take tankery classes, only to find out that it was reinstated. It looks like Miho's mother died in an accident while operating a tank, so no wonder Miho wanted nothing to do with tanks. But after being threatened by an authoritative student council and in wanting her close friends to not wimp out for her sake, she decides to take it on. And it turns out that the town is on a huge ship out in the Pacific.
Great first episode, and I was expecting it to be more Girls und Pantsu instead of Girls und Panzer being a show like Strike Witches with the skirts, or something dumb like Upotte. But there is none of that fluff, and the first episode sets Miho up as a character who is trying to run away from her past. Instead, after being pressured by the student council, it turns out that she has the potential to blow the competition, but needs the right mindset for that to happen.

Episode 1:
- First person tank action. It... looks incredibly odd. Something about the way everything moves makes me a little dizzy. >_> - Pink and yellow tanks. The height of stealth. - Miho is a very cute dojikko. I approve. - Rather new seiyuu too. Maekawa in Denpa Onna was great, and also a rather different voice than Miho. A mix of newbies and veterans in the cast all around it seems. - <3 Saori already. And Miho is such a good girl. <3 - Pushy twintailed loli student council president! Fukuen Misatooooooooo! More of her please. - So in this world, young girls driving tanks is like... tea ceremony or flower arrangement? A refined artistic expression? - Tanks are femininity! - VP is Becky~ - Haha poor Mio, her new friends are completely won over by tanks. - Awwwwww, Miho's friends are amazing. - "Guys and tanks seem kinda mismatched to me." Hahah, I love these alternate histories. And they live on a giant aircraft carrier because why not? I am utterly in love with this show. Other than the CG, every single thing was perfect. Cute designs, good art, a huge cast of interesting looking characters, and the protagonist's past trauma was handled in a way that gives me confidence this show will handle serious matters as well as the cute fun. Easily on par with Hidamari and Chuunibyou for best first episode of the season. If the rest of the show is half this good, this is so imported. It's even better than I had expected.

I personally can't stand her but she is a fan favorite for some... she looks just a slightly older Chika-chan from Ichigo Mashimaro.

-Nazi tank moe?
-Pink is bad camouflage. -Wait am I playing a Skyrim mod with tanks? -Main girl grew up in a bad home? -A monocle! -Tank make better waifus! Is this a totalitarian government in a protracted war? -Oh hi military cosplay girls in the audience. How you doing? -These main girls are cute, but why can't we be following Team Army Cosplay Badasses? *crosses fingers that main girls tank blows up before the end of the episode* -Auch scheisse! Eh it was cutish. The tank part at the start was the most interesting. The lead three seem the most bland though. They are only friends because the story dictates they are. And they go all exposition dump to explain their character traits early on. *shrug*

Saori, why are you so Best Girl? And why are you so goddamned straight? ;_;
Yukari's lots of fun too. And tanks turn her on. We only briefly meet the destined fifth girl, Iguchi Yuuka. Er, I mean Reizei Mako. Also, want more of Team D. Like them a lot. I loved the responses the meganekko got from asking Panzer-chan. Loved that episode so much. This is easily the second best show of the season right now. If it keeps being this good, its going to be really hard to not import.

-Hiding girl you're not doing so well at How Not to Be Seen.
-Damn it! They gave her lines. It'd be cuter if she was always hiding in the background. Being moe. -Oh. She's the panzer otaku. -Who did a Tank get inside a cliff? WHY IS THERE A CLIFF ON AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER!? -Aww team Military Cosplay gets jipped on screen time finding their tank. -Team six girls finds a tank with extra guns, and mascots living in it. -Team Military Cosplay's tank has a non moving turret... And they are thankful for it! Hmm. They are all based upon a different historical military and probably a specific general too. -B... Bikini. *blink* -"All tanks look alike." Yep. -"It's like they're having a conversation, but not." Double yep. -Damn it Panzer otaku! Now that songs in my head. -Always check to make sure it's locked. Always! -AH! Zombie! -Zombie girl is adorably sickly. -L- Live rounds... -Zombie is in danger! -Moe tank is MOE! This is Saki with tanks. It doesn't exactly work. Also the main characters are the least interesting tank team. Wait a second... They find the lost tanks in a forest, a mountain, a lake and inside a building (castle). HOLY CRAP THE TANKS ARE VOLTRON LIONS!

Yukari, a.k.a. Tank Otaku Girl, is awesome in every way, from her stalking the main character to switching modes anytime tanks get brought up.
I also like how we get to see a bit into the different teams and their girls; the former volleyball club is particularly amusing. And Miho apparently comes from an outright school of tankkraft (that's what I'm calling it), and isn't particularly happy about it. (Yet another thing that makes this show very Saki-esque.) Good thing Saori knows just when to change the topic. Everything else was great, too. |
