Default Obscure and Rare Anime

Hello, I have a fond interest in rare and obscure anime. I'm always looking for new stuff I haven't heard of, and those rare undiscovered jems. Having nearly exhausted mainstream anime of most that interested me some years ago, I was forced to delve deeper.

Some of my favorites which I would consider "obscure" are Genocyber, Curse of Kazuo, Gal Force, Fight Iczer!, Angel's Egg, Dragon's Heaven, Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma, Iria: Zeiram the Animation, and Dagger of Kumai.

I highly recommend all of the above!

Do you also have a love for obscure anime? Share your favorites.

If you think you know of some along the lines of what I've listed that might interest me, I would welcome and appreciate any recommendations.

Not sure if any of those count as obscure... I've heard of all of them, where I think I'd only heard of one of the OP's.

For what it's worth I really enjoyed

Gozenzo-sama Banbanzai
Future Police Urashiman
Kemonozume

Think I googled "best animes you've never heard of" or something similar a year or two ago and worked my way through a list or two and the three above stood out for me.

Maybe Cat Soup? I can't remember the Japanese title, but it certainly feels like it would fit into the category of obscure and rare anime.

"Catnapped" probably falls into both of those categories these days...

Within the last couple of weeks, I rewatched the Pioneer DVD with a couple of friends, and I've still got my Catnapped / Tenchi in Love double-feature movie ticket from a 13 Sept. (1997, apparently, since the ticket also says "Saturday") showing at San Jose's Towne 3 theater. ^^

Edit: I found a link to an old newsgroup post mentioning that theatrical showing. ^_^

I have just a few:

Assemble Insert: A pretty fun little OVA from the 80's that parodies stuff like Patlabor and other typical action shows from the period. Yutaka Izubuchi shares a credit for mech design, and it shows.

Labyrinth of Flames: A very fun and echi OVA. It's about a young Russian guy who trains to become a ninja with a family of ninja that escaped to Russia after the Sengoku era.

Ruin Explorers: Was a pretty fun OVA back in the day. The ending left me wanting more though...

Hantsuki: Relatively new (Winter 2006 series), yet somewhat obscure. It was a nice tearjerker about a guy and his girlfriend who was hospitalized due to heart problems. Only six episodes, but worth a watch through.

Outlanders: This one is probably not as obscure as I think, but it was a fun classic. Alien girls and space politics, etc.

Natsuki Crisis: Old, short, OVA meant to sell manga and test the waters for an TV series. While there is a jarring transition from episode 1 to episode 2, it was fun despite being somewhat of a preview of a much longer story. About two girls who were...in some sort of fighting club at school, they develop a friendly rivalry, and have some nicely animated fights.

Combustible Campus Guardress: Though I never got to see all of it, what I did see was some nicely animated 90's fighting anime. It was crazy, but fun to watch. I'm not sure as to how hard it is to find, but I can say it's pretty obscure.

That's all I can think of for now. Hope those help!

Assemble Insert is based on the manga by Yūki Masami, and Yūki Masami and Izubuchi Yutaka are colleagues at the Headgear group.

I'm sorry to say this, but, to put it more precisely, actually that family of samurai escaped in Bakumatsu.

Since the Ruin Explorers anime is based on Tanaka Kunihiko's Ruin Explorers Fam & Ihrie, the anime is so-so well-known in Japan.
After the approx. 10-year hiatus, Tanaka re-started Ruin Explorers Fam & Ihrie in his dōjinshi.
Whether anime companies will get interested in re-started Fam & Ihrie is still questionable, though.

I have mentioned Fam & Ihrie a few times in the AoD fora.
