The ranking in the last list is just how they ranked on the 28th, which of course isn't necessarily how they'll rank for the ful week. Not all titles are released on the same day, some are more dependent upon the opening two days of sales than others, etc.

You can see how Dog Days, Hakuouki, and Arcana came back stronger for the weekend.

I hope Hyouka DVDs rank. This is the first time I've been a bit worried about their chances. They only made the top 30 once this week. Then again, the above listing is all DVDs, and we get the top 30 animation DVDs, so it might not be so bad. BDs aren't showing any weakness either, so DVDs might hit 1k again. Hopefully that's enough. Should be.

Looks like this week should be something like:
Strike Witches → SAO → Horizon → Kuroko → Hyouka → Accel World → Dog Days' → Shin TeniPri → Nyaruko → no idea on 10th place. TE/GC?

Very curious to see how much TE and DD' end up dropping for Vol. 2. Fingers crossed DD' hits at least 7k first week. v2wk1s1 did 7.5k then topped 8k in wk2.

I suppose SAO could top Strike Witches, but only if SAO was underestimated and SW was overestimated. Or maybe with not all of SW's versions likely to rank, it could be at a disadvantage due to splitting. But I think SW should take top unless the Amazon exclusive version of the BD really skewed things. Not sure it did since it was out of stock (and thus getting less points) well before release date.

Summer update:
Sword Art Online v1 sells 27326/6844, total 34,170. Stalker is almost perfect... if you take their BD guess as the combined total, which is what people expected.

Kokoroko v1 sells 2,588 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Maybe you'll crack that losing streak one day, Silver Link.

Horizon II v2 sells 18,033. Up on v1, like with s1. Only very slightly below s1v2wk1.

Dog Days' v2 sells 5525/1958, total 7,483. I was hoping for 7.5k, so I'll gladly call this close enough! Only 37 copies less than s1v2wk1.

Total Eclipse v2 sells 4235/808, total 5,043. Down 21.5% on v1wk1.

Joshiraku v2 stays very steady, sells 3482/706, total 4,188. Only down 0.8% on v1.

Hakuouki v2 sells 3,263 DVDs, BDs do not rank.

Hagure Yuusha v2 sells 1557/604, total 2,161.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Strike Witches movie sells 29757/4227, total 33,984. Slightly disappointing. I thought it would hit 40k. It actually ended up selling very slightly less than SAO, although if REs ranked it would be ahead.

Cardcaptor Sakura BD Box v1 sells 2,801. It's worth noting that this is the second time it's gotten BD boxes, but the first time was before we had access to BD sales numbers.

Aratanaru Sekai BD Box adds 2316 BDs, total 4,046. I can't even remember the last time I saw a release sell more in the second week than the first. That used to happen somewhat frequently half a decade ago or so, but it's almost unheard of now. That explains it jumping to #3 in the daily rankings earlier in the week.


No new v1s next week or the week after. After that, Fall starts with K.

Interesting take away I just realized from SAO's sales. If SAO has decent legs it could become the only other LN property to break the 40k barrier other than Haruhi, or in other words there will finally be an LN adaptation that matches Haruhi or even surpasses it. Of course IS go into the high 30s but its volume sales didn't skyrocket as much as SAO's has.

EDIT: Speaking in terms of overall popularity including novel sales, not just disc sales.

EDIT: Speaking in terms of overall popularity including novel sales, not just disc sales.

Possibly. It's a question of longevity and influence too, but those are more intangible and harder to compare than straight up sales numbers. I think most people would agree Haruhi had more overall influence than Bakemonogatari, but Bakemonogatari's DVD/BD sales were a lot higher. Though its novel sales aren't really on the same level.

If SAO has decent legs it could become the only other LN property to break the 40k barrier other than Haruhi, or in other words there will finally be an LN adaptation that matches Haruhi or even surpasses it. Of course IS go into the high 30s but its volume sales didn't skyrocket as much as SAO's has.

I have to remember you that Haruhi was WAY underestimated by Oricon.
Kadokawa reported 800,000 discs sold in a couple of years (if I remember correctly), against the ~400,000 reported by Oricon: it's closer to 100k than to 40k.

I'd say SAO will go more or less P4 level, if anything.
Remember that is a 2-cour show, so sales will probably drop at least a bit.

Talking of Fall shows, Chuunibyou is doing pretty well with all the six volumes, but I'm really surprised by Girls und Panzer.
I mean, the first volume is 17th right now... It will probably drop quite a lot, but if it does not, we could have a surprise season winner.

Don't think it'll be the winner (Gintama will, unless one of Darkness/Chuunibyou/Jojo/LB! really breaks out bigger than any of them have so far, if or Magi finally gets a foothold) but I'll be utterly delighted if it can hold at a solid 6-7k average. A sequel would be amazing...
