Like you mentioned in your earlier post, they will never hold a midnight opening, why would you when you can read the contents of the next 4-5 novels right now? If kawahara the gawd decided to extend SAO past his web versions... than maybe... we'll probably have another 2 anime seasons before it gets to that point anyway.
It's great that Kawahara was able to get a publisher to print his novels, but that just means it was a successful series prior to being animated just like Haganai was, though its anime is much more successful sales-wise.. Suzuku was trying to say the adaptation would be more successful than Haruhi's was. I've given evidence in the post you quoted to say that the adaptation for Haruhi boosted its novels higher in 3 months than Sword Art Online did.

The fact is that both series are successful, but Haruhi has performed much better than Sword Art Online has both in novel form and disc form upon being animated.

Default Re: Fall '12 Check-up

Normally, the end of the year sucks for sales reporting, due to the holiday rush driving up thresholds. This year, the reporting periods should break down as follows:

2012 12/17~12/23
12/12/19 Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai!
12/12/21 Girls und Panzer
12/12/21 Code:Breaker
12/12/21 Hayate no Gotoku Can't Take My Eyes Off You
12/12/21 Jormungand Perfect Order
12/12/21 Psycho-Pass
12/12/21 To LOVE-ru Darkness

2012 12/24~12/30
12/12/26 Onii-chan Dakedo Ai Sae Areba Kankenai
12/12/26 Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb
12/12/26 Little Busters!
12/12/26 Sukitte Ii na yo.
12/12/26 Busou Shinki
12/12/26 Zetsuen no Tempest
12/12/28 Kami-sama Hajimemashita

This kinda sucks for the 12/17~12/23 titles. First, the threshold will probably be close to 2k that week for BD. Second, ranking on DVD will be very hard. Third, the way the periods fall, getting a second week is probably going to be hard as well. The best hope is that 12/31~1/06 has very low thresholds and some of them make a third week, but only Darkness and Chuunibyou are likely to have any shot at that, unless Girls und Panzer continues ranking like it's been lately.

Of course what would be really bad is if Oricon did that thing where Christmas week and the next week are combined into one two-week list. I don't think they do that anymore though, because 2011 had separate rankings for 19-25, 26-01, and 02~08.

Regarding Kuroko, would I be crazy to think the sudden spike in sales might be due to the various threats recently sent to the creator, either causing more of the fans to want to support the show, or just otherwise giving the show more publicity?

It's probably because it includes a drama CD for what are apparently a few of the most popular characters.

We will also have to check back in 2-3 weeks and see if it ended up selling considerably more than previous volumes, or just modestly more. This could, to a degree, just reflect more front-loaded sales this time. Or perhaps better distribution, so less people have to wait a week or two to get it.

But I'll be very surprised if it's not the best selling volume so far regardless. This is just waaaay too much of a head start not to top v2's 23,675. It could easily pass that just in wk2. Only needs 3.6k and it's never done less than 4.1k in a wk2. Last time wk2 was 5.4k.

I was wondering what are average sales of TV shows for major anime studios.

I mean, the first volume is 17th right now... It will probably drop quite a lot, but if it does not, we could have a surprise season winner.
Don't think it'll be the winner (Gintama will, unless one of Darkness/Chuunibyou/Jojo/LB! really breaks out bigger than any of them have so far, if or Magi finally gets a foothold) but I'll be utterly delighted if it can hold at a solid 6-7k average. A sequel would be amazing...
Girls und Panzer is a really nice surprise at how good it is (after 1 episode)... So I sure hope for a sequel... already!

About Gintama, I wonder if there will be a relatively important difference between vol. 1 with only new episodes and vol. 2 with at least 1 (or more) re-run.

Thanks. What is that document, exactly? Also which page is it on? I'm not getting any hits for "けいおん".

As for rental copies, I wonder if they're included in the other distributors' "shipped" or "sold" numbers? I'd actually expect they are.

This is TBS's quarterly report. The information we're looking for is on pg. 4 (underneath 映像・文化事業セグメン/video & cultural portion) which says:
アニメ事業では、「映画けいおん!」のBD/DVDを7月に発売、セル22万6千、レンタル4万5千、と驚異的なセールスを記録しました。(As for the anime side of business, K-On! the Movie, released in July, has already recorded wonderful sales. It's sold 226,000 sale versions and 45,000 rental versions.)

I highly doubt that other companies include rental figures. They're listed as different copies by the distributor, so I really doubt they're included.
