Default Re: Anime Sales in Japan - 2012

I was reading an article about the new Shimajirou movie and found some interesting information about Movie revenues. According to the article, the Anpanman movie series have a gross box-office revenue of 500 millions yens. But the most interesting bit of information was that the 2005 Arashi no yoru ni movie had a box-office revenue of 1,900,000,000 yens, making it a big success.
More information can be found on: http://animeanime.jp/article/2012/11/09/12021.html

I don't follow that much box-office revenue, but 1.9 billion is a lot isn't it? Or I'm just overreacting?

It would be a truly staggering amount for a late night anime. Only K-ON! Movie has ever done that much (also ¥1.9bn) in terms of late night anime. Evangelion grossed more of course (¥2bn and ¥4bn for the two so far), but Evangelion is a bit different from late night anime as we know it in the 2000-present era.

For family-friendly/kids franchises, it's not that rare. Doraemon, Conan, Pokemon and some other franchises hit over ¥1bn pretty often. This year, the biggest animated films are:
¥4.2bn - Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki
¥3.6bn - Doraemon: Nobita to Kiseki no Shima
¥3.4bn - Pokemon Best Wishes 2012
¥3.2bn - Meitantei Conan: The Eleventh Striker

The usual suspects + Ookami Kodomo.

The overall biggest movie of 2012 so fr is was Umizaru 4. It's adapted from a manga but is live action, and brought in ¥7.3bn. Second place is Thermae Romae, also a live action adaptation of a manga, at ¥5.9bn.

Second week for Dog Days' is about what I expected, good. Still totally on par with season one.

Summer update:
Dog Days' v2 adds 664 BDs, total 8,147. For a comparison of how bizarrely close season one and season two match:
v1: 10,304 vs 10,520
v2: 8,134 vs 8,147
Pretty awesome.

Total Eclipse v2 adds 751 BDs, total 5,794.

Spring update:
Accel World v4 adds 679 BDs, total 8,478.

Nyaruko-san v5 adds 746 BDs, total 6,416.

Eureka AO v5 adds 622 BDs, total 3,768. First time this show has gotten a second week, but it's still in line with the rest because we got monthly adjustments.

Past seasons:
SenColle v7 sells 763/1537, total 2,300.
v8 sells 683/1413, total 2,096.

Guilty Crown v10 adds 566 BD, total 6,160.

Yeah there's nothing quite like seeing two of the three shows tied for #1 of the season for me having all 13 combined volumes in the top 50.

Prettttttttty kickass. I have this nagging suspicion GirlPan is going to be way overestimated by Stalker (almost Tari Tari level), but even if it is, it should still do much better than I expected.

BD総合デイリー
**5 **6 **7 **8 **9 *10 *11 週
*** **7 **1 **8 **4 **2 *** | -- | K 1
*** **9 **3 *10 **7 **3 *** | -- | K 2
*** **1 **2 **9 **5 **6 *** | -- | TARI TARI 3

Tuesday is going to be interesting. Tari Tari was waaaay ahead of K on pre-sale day, but then K v1 jumped into 1st on BD on release day, and stayed ahead of Tari Tari every day since.

I don't expect it sold as much as Tari Tari thanks to that big gap on the first day, but this will be an interesting experiment to see how much the first day ranking really matters. Even if the K BD sells half as much as Tari Tari, that's a lot more than Stalker predicted. I did expect it to significantly outdo its estimate in any case.

Default Madoka Movies 1-2 pass ¥1bn

http://0taku.livedoor.biz/archives/4333157.html

Combined total gross for the two Madoka Magica movies is now over ¥1 billion. That's ¥520 million for Hajimari no Monogatari (6 weeks), and ¥480 million for Eien no Monogatari (5 weeks). Pretty good for recaps.

Default Re: Fall '12 Check-up

I've mentioned before that Amazon also tracks best sellers on a monthly and yearly basis. Monthly rankings can be a good way of "smoothing out" the hourly and daily fluctuations that can throw off Stalker points. If a title gets a few thousand points with a couple really good days and then collapses, it might have similar points to something that sells at a more modest, but steady, pace.

Oct Nov
*** *17 Chuunibyou v7
*98 *20 GirlPan v1
*52 *24 Chuunibyou v1
*** *36 GirlPan v2
*83 *40 Chuunibyou v2
*** *42 Hidamari v1
*** *45 GirlPan v3
100 *49 Chuunibyou v3
*** *50 GirlPan v4
*** *53 GirlPan v5
*** *54 Chuunibyou v4
*** *55 Chuunibyou v5
*** *57 Chuunibyou v6
*** *58 GirlPan v6
*35 *80 Gintama v1
*** *81 Hidamari v3
*** *83 K v1
*37 *** TLR Darkness v1
*51 *** Jojo v1
*54 *** Little Busters v1
*77 *** TLR Darkness v2
*85 *** Little Busters v2
*90 *** Jojo v2
*91 *** TLR Darkness v3
*92 *** Little Busters v3
*96 *** Little Busters v4
*97 *** Little Busters v5
*99 *** TLR Darkness v6

So for example, Little Busters v1 accumulated 2,833 points on Stalker from solicitation on 10/07 to 10/31 and was 54th for October, versus 2,653 for Chuunibyou from solicitation on 10/04 to 10/31 and was 52nd for the month. Chuu2 had less points over 3 more days, yet still had a better rank for the month.

Chuu2 v7 is already the 17th best selling title of November, with 2,203 points, which is less points, but three ranks higher than, GirlPan v1 at 2,596 points.

Of course this assumes monthly ranks are driven only by sales and not by average ranks through the month or whatever. I would assume it's sales (influenced by MSRP somewhat, though).

Either way, the first two weeks of this month have been all Chuu2GirlPan all the time. Chuu2 has really pulled ahead of the titles that did better in October (Jojo, Darkness, LitBus) by maintaining its strong position while those fell off.

But Darkness is now back in the top 100 for the first time in a while (and has stronger DVD sales) and LitBus got a big boost from the bonus episode announcement, so we'll have to see what November brings.

Heh, Evangelion.
Once again, pre-sale day shows how much it matters. Tari Tari sells more than double what K does, despite K leading every daily rank after pre-sale day.
And I hoped Hyouka would get a third week, but 381 is a little more than it does third week. Monthly list perhaps.
A change on Stalker: v1 DVDs and BDs are now combined into one table. Thankfully you can now sort on more than one column at a time, so I can still check just BDs by rank, or just DVDs by points, etc.
Lastly... go figure, I actually catch the weekly txt file on 2ch for once and nothing new was added. -_-

Fall update:
K v1 sells 3590/1607, total 5,197.
v2 sells 2632/1047, total 3,679, down 29.2%. While it's much better than Stalker predictions, as expected, this is not looking good for K. They clearly they a lot of money at this show and ~3.7k for volumes after the first is quite poor.

Summer update:
Tari Tari sells 7,328 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Oda Nobuna v3 sells 3694/829, total 4,523. Three volumes in a row it's increased slightly for wk1.

Moyashimon v3 sells 815/711, total 1,526.

Sword Art Online v1 adds 916/395, total 38,954.

Horizon II v2 adds 381, total 20,662.

Past seasons:
KuroBas v4 adds 505 DVDs, total 25,251. 25k mark passed for the first time. Up 18.8% on v3.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Strike Witches movie adds 893 BDs, total 39,433. Still not quite 40k, and I'm not sure it'll move enough next week to hit it. There's always the yearly list I guess.

No new v1s next week. BTOOOM and Kaibutsu-kun the week after.
