I kind of get where you're coming from, but I personally don't think that argument works.

Since you're comparing one series that has an adaptation based off the original work to a series which has works that are separate identities from each other. (plus the NGE manga happened first, so one could argue it being the "original work")

Most people tend to think of the show rather than than the manga since it was so huge as a show, and ultimately saved Gainax.

Most people tend to think of the show rather than than the manga since it was so huge as a show, and ultimately saved Gainax.
That really doesn't mean anything here.
