Well, maybe you're right, but speaking about "active anime fans in Japan" there are other Japanese rankings too like this
http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2012/1...-january-2013/
which have much more people who voted ^^;
That's a list of what people say they want to watch. The sales guesses are how much people (who post in the 2ch sales thread and thus probably follow sales data quite closely) think shows will sell, regardless of what the individual guessing likes (though it may cause slight bias). They're trying to do two different things, and asking different people.

I mean, Chihayafuru 2 being first would already completely invalidate the poll as an accurate predictor of success, if that's what it were trying to be. I love the show but it's going to sell terribly just like season one.
Makes one wonder, why did they make a second season? Manga sales are doing well, almost 2.5 million in 2012. Seen as good promotion for it?

As YoshiYoshi said, that poll is made by people frequenting that particular anime site, and so only shows the preference of the core users there. I would fault sankakucomplex.com (a site I really love to hate because of all the distorting and sensationalist reports about Japan) for not providing more information about how the survey was done.

On the other hand, even though the number of votes in 2ch Sales Thread may be much fewer, at least those who participate are fans who are serious about predicting the final sales of the title, which is a more objective gauge than a poll measurement of a title's popularity.

Well, for midnight anime series, the idea is that they are making appeals mostly to dedicated anime fans, and those people would do their homework by checking those PVs, web page and fan discussion sites to learn about the coming series and make decision of what they will watch and what they will drop. Given the large number of such series each season, it is a must for most people to prioritize their watching preference before the season starts.

Most people tag ViviPan to the line of Strike Witches and they feel that the character designs, the synopsis and the animation in the PVs seem to point to equivalent standard achieved by Strike Witches. As for Tamakoma, basically the estimate for KyoAni production is never going to be low. Of course the end result may be quite off, but I would say that the expectations are far from baseless.

I figure marketing just costs money they don't have, and since late night anime only targets a hardcore base anyway, it's not all that necessary. People who haven't read the original material aren't expected to know hat they want before the season has started. Certainly I'd never make a decision before watching, although I do have shows I expect to like, for sure.

Original shows get hype when they've got creator pedigree. Tamakoma is KyoAni of course, and I think everyone is expecting the director of Strike Witches to come up with another hit in Vividred.

Default Re: 2012 12/17~12/23 Anime 30/10 List

Daily rankings for the upcoming titles. Previous volume week 1 sales listed when available.

12/26 DVD Releases
25 December
13 - *5,859 - Sword Art Online v3 [5,859]
16 - *2,704 - Hellsing OVA v10
18 - **,*** - Kuroko no Basuke Fandisc
30 - **,*** - One Piece Log Collection "OHZ"

12/26 BD Releases
25 December
*1 - 24,786 - Sword Art Online v3
*3 - **,*** - Little Busters! v1
*5 - **,*** - Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb v1
*7 - *6,403 - Accel World v6
*8 - *2,462 - Hellsing OVA v10
11 - *3,797 - Aquarion Evol v9
13 - *4,950 - Dog Days' v4
19 - *2,533 - Campione! v4
20 - **,*** - Busou Shinki v1

If we look at the animation-only (so don't compare this to the usual all-genre daily rankings) DVD ranking we can at least see how they fare against one another:
*1 - *5,859 - Sword Art Online v3
*2 - *2,704 - Hellsing OVA v10
*3 - **,*** - Kuroko no Basuke Fandisc
*4 - **,*** - One Piece Log Collection "OHZ"
*5 - **,*** - One Piece Log Collection "BROOK"
*6 - *2,181 - Kuroko no Basuke v6 (wk2 data)
*7 - **,*** - Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb v1
*8 - **,*** - Little Busters! v1
*9 - *1,704 - Dog Days' v4
10 - **,*** - [Sengoku Basara Live Event]
11 - *1,506 - Accel World v6
12 - *1,136 - Aquarion Evol v9
13 - **,937 - Smile Precure♪ v7
14 - **,980 - Campione! v4
15 - **,760 - Chouyaku Hyakunin Isshu Utakoi. v4
16 - **,*** - Hetalia World Series DVD Box v2
17 - *1,237 - Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun v2
18 - *1,106 - Arcana Famiglia v4
19 - **,*** - Busou Shinki v1
20 - **,*** - Gintama' Enchousen v1 (week 2)

Little Busters at #3 among DVDs is pretty impressive, especially since it's expected to very much be a storefront title. Both it and Hidamari being ahead of Accel World could be rather promising if it holds for a few days. Both should easily rank on DVD as well. But if Accel World is a couple ranks ahead of them tomorrow and the rest of the week, then odds are lower that they sold more.

12 → ** - *1,136 - Aquarion Evol v9
13 → ** - **,937 - Smile Precure♪ v7

18 → ** - *1,106 - Arcana Famiglia v4
19 → ** - **,*** - Busou Shinki v1
20 → ** - **,*** - Gintama' Enchousen v1 (week 2)

Ooh, LB! and Hidamari ahead of AW two days in a row. That makes it quite likely they did indeed sell more, which means at least 6k BDs each. 10k really is within LB!'s reach, I think, though it's still high end.

I also own the novels in two languages (Japanese and its official Chinese translation) and read them too. And note that I never said that fans complained about the adaptation being unfaithful on the overall picture. I only said that certain adaptation choice and elements picked are often the issues mentioned by fans in Japan as reasons that they could not love the series more.
Which is what I found interesting as someone who only knows overall what happens in the story and not all specifics. So, it was interesting to hear "certain adaptation choices and elements" that are picked out. It's something for me to think about when going back to actually read the light novel and re-watch season 1 at some point.

Hi! Where can I find an updated list of 歴代累計平均ランキング(テレビアニメ) (集計期間1988年頃~2012年12月24日付速報) that extends beyond 50 places? The list at http://www38.atwiki.jp/uri-archive/pages/75.html lists only 50 titles, including OVAs. Is there still an updated list that goes down to TV anime with average sales of at least 10K copies?

This one goes beyond 50 titles. In fact it got everything with average sales over 5K. However it starts from 2000, though I think it kind of makes sense as the sales channels and model for TV anime were quite different before around 2000: http://www38.atwiki.jp/uri-archive/pages/76.html

Psycho-Pass did pretty well for itself after all, though it's discounted. And lots of BD boxes in here.

Fall update:
Psycho-Pass v1 sells 4476/1183, total 5,659.

Jormungand PO v1 sells 2,392 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Summer update:
Jintai v4 sells 3,847 BDs, DVDs do not rank. I wish this would have kept above 4k BDs wk1, but it would look a bit better if DVDs still ranked. Still, even with monthly, this volume will only be a little over 4k.

Total Eclipse v4 sells 3,412 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Lagrange S2 v4 sells 1,571 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Past seasons:
Eureka AO v7 sells 2,741 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Small drop after dong 3.1k BDs wk1 three volumes in a row.

Gundam AGE v11 sells 1,327 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Cowboy Bebop BD Box sells 14291 LE/1332 RE, total 15,623. Leaps right into the BD Box Top 5 List.
04) ¥*873.9m (21,903 * ¥39,900) - Toradora!
05) ¥*574.1m (15,623 * ¥**,***) - Cowboy Bebop (LE 14,291*¥36,750 + RE 1,332*¥26,250)
06) ¥*503.5m (13,701 * ¥**,***) - Strike Witches (Three pressings: 7,011*¥36,750 + 5,416*¥36,750 + 1,274*¥22,050)

Macross 7 BD Box v2 sells 3,851 which is a good deal more than the first set.
21) ¥*206.5m (*5,618 * ¥**,***) - Strike Witches 2 (Two pressings: 5,618*¥36,750 + **¥22,050)
22) ¥*203.4m (*6,920 * ¥29,400) - Macross 7 (2 parts: 3,069 + 3,851)

26) ¥*175.0m (*7,576 * ¥23,100) - Cardcaptor Sakura (3 parts: 2,801 + 2,477 + 2,298; 2012 release only)
