Help! Can anyone confirm that these new Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo sets have the same picture quality compared to the older Geneon/Pioneer releases? It seems Funi has condensed what used to be a 7 disk set down to a 4 disk set...
Are the menus different as well? I'm going to assume the line drawing character concept art is gone from the Extras in the Tenchi in Tokyo set. |

| | | | Alright, well since I probably won't get a reply, I hope I'm not making the wrong decision in selling my 2007 Geneon/Pioneer Complete Collections of Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo. Just seems weird for Funi to squish 26 episodes onto 4 disks instead of the 8 that Geneon did. Hopefully the video quality isn't compromised. It was weird that my Geneon 2007 sets had weird staining/light scratches on both disks 1 & 8 for Universe and In Tokyo. I think it had to do with them being on the inside front and back covers and the plastic somehow did that to them.

I haven't seen any of their recent DVDs, but FUNi used to be notorious for having severe compression artifacts on their DVDs compared to other companies. Not sure if anyone cares that much about Tenchi in Tokyo to do a comparison, but you might want to see if you can get the Pioneer versions back, or at least a couple of them to compare for yourself.

Just picked up the new Funi Tenchi in Tokyo set off eBay (brand new...and for a much lower price than it's going for...seems everyone hates this show except me lol) so I'll do some comparisons and see which version is better. Then sell off the other one. Probably do the same to Universe.

nah I enjoyed and preferred TiT over TU. TU was too much of a rehash of the OVA. And TiT was loads better by not focusing on the 2 nags... (Ayaka and Ryoko) Tenchi actually had a backbone and choose someone as opposed to being pulled back and forth.
OVA still the best thou... |

Quote:
I think the humor in TiT is the best in the series. Universe focuses on Mihoshi being a bimbo as comedy relief while TiT has hilarious scenes/characters like that purple cell phone monster, the telephone game effect of Tenchi doing weird things he's not actually doing (Long Distance Lunacy), Nobuyuki being more hilarious than usual (especially in Stupid Cupid), Ayeka and Sasami helping catch that intergalactic track star, Amagasaki is way more funny in TiT than in any other Tenchi show, Kiyone and Mihoshi undercover...overall TiT is just way more comical and zany than any other Tenchi show while still having the obvious serious moments to wrap it all up.

My assumption was correct - the new box released from Funi has slightly more compressed video. I figured it would have to be considering we're talking about disks with 7 episodes on it instead of 3 (Geneon disks, 2007).
The compression causes ever so slightly more aliasing, but otherwise this new Funi set is nearly identical to the Geneon disks. I did a comparison last night between the two releases and it was extremely hard to tell the difference. The only way someone would notice would be to do a side-by-side comparison and because of that I'm selling my old Geneon set. I'll take the slimmer 4-disk set over the larger and more ridiculous disk holder setup of Geneon's 7-disk set. The kicker: The extra aliasing is seriously unnoticeable on a CRT SDTV. I tested both box sets on my LED HDTV via PS3 and my SDTV via DVD player and only on the HDTV when it's being upscaled are you able to barely notice a difference if you look out for it enough. SO...anyone wondering about compression differences, there you go. Worth the purchase IMO.

Compression can cause aliasing? I don't see how, unless the film cadence somehow got messed up as a result of the compression.
I also had to ironically LOL at you sig considering how much focus Sasami received back in the day. |
