Well, I would say that it's not completely meaningless, if only as a somewhat interesting comparative exercise. Chuunibyou was solicited virtually identically to this, and for all intents and purposes could be considered original as well, since almost nobody had read the source material.

Hyouka is tougher to compare because it was solicited about a week before airing, though it was in the top 100 within 7 hours and top 30 soon after anyway, which is arguably the more impressive feat since it hadn't aired. Nichijou is harder still to compare since it was on and off Amazon for a few days before it final got a formal listing, so Stalker didn't start counting rank until nearly three days after its very first temporary appearance (it started out at #45 though).

That said, any ranking after only a couple hours is virtually meaningless in the long run. It can take 12+ hours after an episode airs airing for any real movement from that episode to be reflected even when it's been airing for a few weeks (Chuunibyou's jumps tended to be on a bit of a delay for example). I also feel like Chuunibyou had a bigger marketing push, especially putting out the Lite episode before the TV series started.

But whatever the reason, and whatever the limited significance, Tamako isn't jumping into the top 100 as quickly as the past two KyoAni shows have. Yet for all we know it'll be equivalent there by tomorrow morning.

I'm not worried right now. If it follows Chuunibyou's pattern of B&M sales at all, it'll significantly outperform Stalker's estimates anyway. I'm guessing the same sort of store extras will be lined up for this.

Yep. Animate/Gamers/HMV/Tsutaya newly drawn boxes. I expect store front sales to be a good chunk of total sales. Again, I feel it's pointless to compare at first solicitation because 1. it's original this time where Chuunibyou had some novel readers, not to mention 8 months of pre-air advertisement compared to 6 weeks for Tamako and 2. anything can happen to raise/lower sale rates between now and March. Let's see what happens when we get more data, which will be skewed due to storefront effect.

So it just took an extra couple hours to rev up its engines, no big deal.

I hope it's underestimated, because higher than expected sales are nice. Hyouka had generally been overestimated 20-30% per disc so far so it could go either way, but in terms of release specs Tamako matches Chuunibyou a lot more closely. I guess it'll be telling to watch HMV's rankings and see if it dominates there the way Chuunibyou did, once extras are announced.

As a side note, hooray, I managed to catch the weekly data files on 2ch. I'll get started on adding full lists for the past two weeks asap.

The BD lists go to 100 now! And Oricon seems to track outside the top 100 now as well, because I see a 'last week' ranking for SAO v1 of 123.

That's... friggin' huge. Monumental even. This is a major change for sales data followers. And it's going to make be a heck of a lot busier.

The big story here is that GirlPan did have a very high second week, which is great. I suppose even with the limited stock, not everyone got their shipments right away. Now we wait until later in the month to hopefully see more.

OniAi v1 sells 2,231 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Busou Shinki v1 sells 2,184 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Kaibutsu-kun v2 sells 1,209 BDs, DVDs do not rank. This is very very odd. BDs dropped only very slightly, but DVDs went from 1237 to below 998.

Chuunibyou v2 adds 1715 BDs, total 16,173.

Shinsekai Yori v2 sells 594 BDs, DVDs do not rank. First volume to rank since we don't have anything for v1.

GirlPan v1 adds 2605 BDs, total 16,155.

TLR Darkness adds 1768 BDs, total 11,982.

This really drives home just how much data we've been missing out on. These look like BD thresholds from the old Bakemonogatari/K-ON! era... Sword Art Online looks like it's the first mega-hit that will benefit fully from the advantage of this new expanded data.

Kamimashita v1 adds 322/718, total 5,787. Definitely better than the other two shoujo manga adaptations this season, though I prefer those over this (but I like all three.
