Gundam: The 08th MS Team BD Box to Add New Short Film

Ichiro Okouchi writes scenario of title team during new Zeon attack from all sides

The Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team original video anime series will get a Blu-ray Memorial Box on February 22, 2013, and the box will bundle a brand-new short film, "Sanjigen to no Tatakai" (Battle in Three Dimensions, pictured right). Ichiro Okouchi wrote the scenario, which follows the 08th MS Team (led by Shiro Amada in the Gundam Ez-8) through the jungle zone towards the next battlefront. Just as they approach a bridge, the team is attacked by the Zeon forces from the front, left, right, and the air.

The 26,250-yen (US$330) set will include the anime series' 12 episodes (including the epilogue special), a promotional video and commercial collection, the pilot film, the credit-less opening and ending animation sequences, a storyboard collection, a collection of illustrations from magazines and promotional materials, and a 42-page booklet with the scenario for the short film. The bonus extras Blu-ray Disc will have "Sanjigen to no Tatakai," and The 08th MS Team Data Archives. The video series will have both the original soundtrack and the 5.1ch version.

Hajime Katoki is illustrating the box, and Kunio Okawara, Kimitoshi Yamane, and Toshihiro Kawamoto are illustrating the jackets for the three main discs inside. The animation staff of the short film are illustrating the jacket for the bonus extras disc.

Finally, a classic Gundam OVA series on BD. I'd rather have 0083 or 0080 (the latter of which has never even received a remastered DVD), but this series is also quite welcome. Glad I sold off the 5.1 HD Remaster DVDs long ago.

edit: And I really hope the "San-jigen no tatakai" short film isn't just some new CGI crap extra like what was in the ZZ BD sets...

Really? Because I seem to recall the 0080 DVDs looking much better than 0083 or 08th MS Team (at least the R1 anyway). I never felt compelled to import 0080 in R2J like I did with 0083 and 08th MS Team because the quality was already really good on the R1.

Don't think I'll get this. I'm still waiting for 0083. Now that I would happily pay premium for on BD.

You may be right about the quality of the R1s (been years and years since I watched them), although it was more than just the video that got an upgrade in the case of 08th Team and 0083. They both received completely new 5.1 remixes in Japan (I believe all the voices were re-recorded for 0083 as well) for their HD Remaster DVDs. Seemed kind of unfair for 0080 to not get the same treatment. I was also expecting 0080 to be released on BD in 2009, since it first came out on LD/VHS in 1989 for Gundam's 10th anniversary, then it first came out to DVD for the 20th anniversary, but the 30th anniversary came and went without much of anything Gundam related on BD.

Ah c'mon, all those cheesy old sound effects tracks have a certain charm, right? But seriously, good point.

Can't say I like the box art very much, especially compared to the various DVD box sets. The jacket art looks great, though.

I watched this once on R1 DVD and I still haven't even watched the R2J HD remaster DVDs I got since then. Another indicator that I probably shouldn't bother getting the BDs.
