The killer here is the combination of time and discount rate. Strike Witches II saw a boxset about a year after the original BD release was over (6 discs @ 9240), and it was 36,750 yen. It sold out, and now they're re-releasing a standard edition for 22,050. So basically each subsequent release was about 2/3 of the previous price, and released about a year after the last.

Even Another, though it's being released only 7 months after the last single, was just under 2/3 of the original price, if you don't count the OAD (which is the real annoyance there, since this its only Blu-Ray release).

Here though, it's the same one year period, but it's 1/3 of the original price, so way too heavily discounted. (It's almost the same price as the SW2 boxset, and that had half the episode count!) But I'm sure they released that a 2-cour boxset priced at ~73k yen wouldn't move either. I suppose what they could have done, though, is released two half-season boxsets at ~30k yen each; that would have taken some of the sting out at least.

I think the days when anyone but the hardest of hardcore fans will buy two-cour Kadokawa shows at their top-tier single prices are numbered now (as if they already weren't rare enough). Even Hyouka was at 7350/vol. and not 9240, though that was perhaps because they released it could sell more copies.

(I suppose a small part of the problem is that it's hard to license any show these days if not on Blu-Ray, and Kadokawa doesn't seem to want a licensed Blu-Ray release until they've released a box domestically. I wonder if that's one of the factors influencing the lessening gap between singles and boxes.)

I have a feeling Gosick was the last hurrah for 2-cour, ¥9240, 2ep/vol releases, or at least I damn well hope so. Nichijou and Hyouka were bad enough at a lower MSRP. But until they break this 2-cour 11+ disc format, even a MSRP in the ¥7.5k range only helps so much.

Even going ¥8190x9 (¥73,710) for 25-26 or ¥8190x8 (¥65,520) for 22-24 would be an improvement over the ¥103,740 for Nichijou or ¥80,850 for Hyouka.

Might be longer before they drop ¥9240 for 1-cour releases. I dread what they'll do with the inevitable Strike Witches 3.
