A lot of people are buying this as well clearly. Official twitter has been talking about how they can't keep up with demand for the manga. No surprise, they couldn't possibly have expected this.

Actually when I said the manga seems weaker, I did not mean it is bad. It is just that the anime is so much stronger and a lot of it can be attributed to the extra material added in the anime and extra thought put into the adaptation process.

I think fans in 2ch Sales Thread are thinking of similar things when they comment if the recent weakening of MaoYuu in Amazon ranking may indicate the end of the "early adopter" push. I agree that the coming days should show us how much MaoYuu is able to draw in fans who did not start as a fan of the LN.

Vividred actually surprises me. For me, the whole power rangers-esque transformations and screaming out attacks every second is a turn-off. It's something I might have enjoyed when I was 10 years old and being obsessed with power rangers, but it just seems silly to me now.

That, and the plot is just so unimaginatively similar to Strike Witches ( No surprise I guess ), only this time the girls learn how to use their 'powers' right off the bat whereas in SW they actually trained. It just seems so pretentious to me, but obviously Japan loves it and that's all that matters.

Well, I love ViviPan for what it does though (and I am a person who is never fond of Power Rangers or their ilks) Technically speaking ViviPan is marvellous. Admittedly the story is not great but I won't say it is unimaginatively similar to Strike Witches, because it also (unimaginatively) steals from a lot more other shows. In fact, personally I feel the influence of PreCure may be even more prominent than Strike Witches, and not to say influence from Symphogear, Aquarion, Eureka Seven AO, and even Evangelion and Madoka. True it may be something like one of those kid shows for a 10 year old, but once it is upgraded to such technical level and otaku-appealing design it is still a wonder to behold. Some fans in Japan describe the show as "PreCure for adults" and I think it pretty much pins down what the show is about.

I'd say it's more GaoGaiGar than Power Rangers, which might be why it's striking a chord with a lot of people. I like a bit of giant robot stuff here and there, but I'm not a huge fan of it - take the NEKKETSU ACTION and put it in the hands of cute yuri-inclined girls instead, and suddenly you have a major winning combination.

It just seems so pretentious to me, but obviously Japan loves it and that's all that matters.

Maybe it's not the word you really meant to use, but Vividpan strikes me as about as far from "pretentious" as any show could possibly be this side of Dog Days. It so clearly revels in its ludicrous goofiness and doesn't even begin to take itself seriously. Which can either be the primary charm, or a turnoff.

I bought volume three with a little student organizer since the regular one was out of stock but the organizer is for 2011-2012!!! Kotoura filled some out already so I think you were supposed to put your own pad into it but anyways... That made me look and volume three came out in September 2011. But volume 4 comes out next month which is a bit of a gap. I have preordered it already.

They are larger format than I expected too which is nice for yonkoma manga. Easy to read though not as pocketable. Fun stuff.

Yea, pretentious may not have been the right word. I couldn't think of anything else at the time so that's what I went with.

You're right though, the combo they went with for Vividred is clearly a hit to fans in Japan. I hope we see more shows where the focus isn't in a school setting. There are so many different things they could do with cute girls!

Cute girls + drifting? Cute girls + time travel? The possibilities are endless

You lack the proper references to really get why Vividred is popular.

Also, its plot is not really very similar to Strike Witches at all. Strike Witches did not invent "unknown alien monster things invade", and the rest of Vividred's setup is far closer to say Mazinger Z than it is Strike Witches.

Also, pretentious does not mean what you seem to think it means.
