Forgive me, but why do they need 5 blu-ray disks for 11 episodes? And that retail price?! I'm just getting back into anime but damn this seems like overkill and too expensive.

5 discs because the JP BDs were 5 discs, so they are using the same amount of discs. As for the price, that is a normal pricing for a release by Aniplex of America.

I can sort of see where he's coming from in regards to the disc count for this set, but only because of the commentaries being excluded.

Is this a sequel or prequel to Bakamonogatari(sp)? I wanna get into this show, but it seems pretty strange, not sure i'd blindbuy.

This is the first sequel to Bakemonogatari. You don't have to blind-buy the set. It's streaming on Crunchyroll, Crackle, and hulu. It's more divise than Bake was, so I would recommend viewing before you purchase.

It's definitely nicely done by Aniplex USA. Too bad they didn't had the rights for the commentaries.
