Point taken about fansub comparison, but an R2J screencap was posted.
So, either NISA's materials just suck, or they need to stop running them through extra filters or processes that make them suck.

It's funny because the first discs of Toradora! were brightened, but the fixed discs were identical to the R2.

Ok, the R1 screencap is compressed, for one. After fiddling around with both, the grain is definitely the same. The R1 is also brighter, which is actually not unusual, R1 DVDs are frequently brighter than the R2 version. I seem to remember someone explaining something about Japanese TV having a different black level standard or somesuch. Anyway, the brightening interacted really badly with the artificial grain.
