Does anyone know any details on how SOundscan differs from Oricon? Their numbers for Madoka are *way* different. This was posted in the lievdoor thread, and the major differences are similar to the last time I saw this posted.

Soundscan BD (Previous volume - This volume - Title)
62,*** 61,*** Madoka Magica
29,598 29,*** Tiger & Bunny
28,*** 26,*** AnoHana
25,*** 24,*** Infinite Stratos
16,*** 16,*** Steins;Gate
12,*** 12,*** Index II
*7,*** *7,*** Azazel
**,*** *6,*** Natsume San
*6,*** *6,*** Denpa Onna
*6,*** *5,*** Ao no Exorcist
*5,*** *5,*** Star Driver
*6,*** **,*** Dog Days
*4,*** **,*** A Channel
*3,*** **,*** Freezing

Soundscan DVD
14,801 11,011 Gintama'
*9,764 *9,398 Madoka Magica
*7,879 *7,428 Infinite Stratos
*8,236 *7,037 Ao no Exorcist
*4,895 *4,443 AnoHana

For comparison, Oricon numbers for this volume, using Soundscan ordering:

Oricon BD
50,596 Madoka Magica (~10,404)
23,165 Tiger & Bunny (~5,835)
21,839 AnoHana (~4,161)
21,122 Infinite Stratos (~2,878)
13,248 Steins;Gate (~2,752)
10,562 Index II (~1,438)
*5,930 Azazel (~1,070)
*5,676 Natsume San (~324)
*5,181 Denpa Onna (~819)
*5,307 Ao no Exorcist (n/a)
*4,583 Star Driver (~417)
*5,161 Dog Days (n/a)
**,*** A Channel (n/a)
**,*** Freezing (n/a)

Oricon DVD
10,603 Gintama' v2 (408)
*8,422 Madoka Magica (976)
*7,319 Infinite Stratos (109)
*6,882 Ao no Exorcist (155)
*4,192 AnoHana (251)

Order is mostly the same except Soundscan has Denpa over AoEx BD and Star Driver over Dog Days BD.

But 11k missing Madoka discs? What could Soundscan possibly be counting that Oricon isn't that could account for such a huge amount? Other shows have a proportionally much smaller discrepancy (Stratos for example). But that Madoka difference is absolutely huge. Soundscan is claiming 70k first week...

Assuming those Soundscan numbers were posted correctly, anyway. It's just some guy on a messageboard posting it after all.

Yosuga no Sora with its ¥6300/¥9450 MSRPs (DVD/BD) has brought in about ¥273.0m total at MSRP. Averages ¥68.5m per volume.
Azazel-san with its ¥5250/¥5250 MSRPs (odd in itself, DVD and BD the same?) has brought in ¥98.3m but we know it's not complete yet. Per-volume average is ¥49.2m and if you calculate that out for another volume and you've got approximately ¥147.4m total. ~2,000 more per volume, only about half the real sales.
Isn't that to be expected though? Yosuga no Sora has ~24 minute episodes and Azazel-san has ~12 minute episodes. The actual running time of Azazel in total is half that of Yosuga no Sora. Wouldn't that be like comparing the sales of a one-cour show to that of a two-core show? The per-volume average would be a bit better to examine, showing YnS with about 1.4 times more sales per vol than Azazel. Again though, YnS if I remember correctly had entire arcs on each volume. That's 3-4 episodes per disc I would imagine. Whereas Azazel had 4 half-length episodes or just 2 episodes per disc.

Been lurking this thread (and its precursor) for quite awhile. Thanks for all the sales numbers and discussion.

Well you can have the same information providers in general and still have different numbers, when the 3DS got it's price cut a few weeks ago after it's lackluster performance there was differences of 20k between Famitsu, Dengeki and Media Create.

Who knows how accurate Oricon is... the producer of noitaminA had an issue with the numbers a while ago... but Oricon is all we have.. even if we got soundscan numbers for Madoka you would need soundscan numbers for Bakemonogatari, K-ON!, Geass, Macross Frontier etc to have a real comparison.

And than that's assuming the Soundscans numbers are more accurate than Oricon's, all these companies have different algorithms they use to work with the numbers they have.

Well Tiger and Bunny has a difference of nearly 6.5k, double the sales of it to nearly match Madoka's and it would be missing 13k.

And of course this is true as well.

Ah, thanks, that part I didn't know. I didn't watch Azazel-san so I assumed it was normal length episodes.

Right, I'm not proposing we use Soundscan over Oricon. In addition to seeing the numbers only very intermittently, they're way less comprehensive (at least as posted), and only rounded to the thousand. Pretty useless for our purposes. It's just interesting that the differences vary so much. Madoka (20% total) and T&B (25% on BD) have some major percentage differences with Oricon. Infinite Stratos and, say, Natsume San BD are relatively closer.

Is it algorithms or just a straight sum of unit sales per store per SKU? No idea what format they get and process the data in... I was mostly wondering if Soundscan covered a couple big stores Oricon didn't that happened to sell a huge number of Madoka discs.

Are there any other previous Soundscan numbers? I wouldn't worry about the difference unless we have more data to compare. But, that discrepancy with Madoka is pretty large.

The only thing I could think of is more independent shops report to Soundscan than Oricon? But, that would mean a lot of small shops then.

Well I know that the US for NPD and such get their numbers from certain stores and than use their methods to account for the stores they don't get figures from, like Walmart for one. I would assume that it works the same in Japan considering you get figures like

Media Create 196,000
Enterbrain 214,000
Famitsu 204,000

For the 3DS Price Drop week, and they have the same sources of information. Clearly they rate other areas they don't have access to numbers differently from each other. For example if they don't get amazon numbers than Enterbrain formula rates them higher than MC etc.

You'll never get perfect figures, and it doesn't help that companies themselves talk only in shipped, though I really don't see that happening in regards to anime. Kinda weird when you think about it... The video game, manga and light novel companies always talk in shipped... why not anime?

There was something posted four weeks ago when the previous volumes of these series came out. I don't remember the exact numbers though.

Just an FYI, 2ch speculates the overall recent drops in sales is due to splurging on Comiket 80. It's likely to bounce back after a little recovery time.
