Fantastic animation =/= sales. Stop bringing that up.
I like how you ignore that IS is a blend of two of the most popular genres in Anime (who could've predicted it would sell!!), but yeah lets also pretend good animation doesn't help.

This is where I stop taking you seriously. When you try to validate an argument and you blow off anothers argument with a bloody 4chan meme you're doing something terribly wrong.
Your point was originality can sell, holy shit sherlock is reborn! But guess what, so can cliche mainstream shit.

Quote:
You said IS was behind, not ahead.
First mention = Dengeki's online poll for the Winter season had IS in second place
Second mention = The point is that sequel to a well known property was the only thing that Dengeki readers had higher

Apart from you missing the point of IS having a no chance of beating Reaching You in expectation polls what's the problem?

Quote:
Did I really need to state the TV series when I said box sets? Are you this slow? Of course I am talking about the TV series you dope. You're making yourself look silly now.
You singled out the boxsets as being the only high selling DVDs of One Piece even though the latest movie was a massive success well beyond any Otaku anime aside from NGE. For some reason you're also wondering why a near 500 episode long tv series that will last another decade isn't selling well outside of box sets.

Quote:
Next work from a successful team? You mean like.. Gainax working on Hanamaru Kindergarten, that sold tons didn't it.
You're right, how did the same company that was apart of the massive success in Shikabane Hime fail so horribly with their next project in Hanamaru.

It's not like Gainax said Gurren Lagann guys are working on P&S which hyped it up as a project considerably more than Hime and Hanamaru.

Quote:
Also girl.
Whatever girlfriend.

Quote:
No... no, not really.
Yes, do it, Did so.

Quote:
Well now you're just proving my point and getting mad over an obviously bad joke.
Snarky comment =! mad

But yeah ma.. I mean girl step up your jokes.

Quote:
And this is where you stop making sense.
My comment was more about how much of a total non factor AC was, yet for some reason you're trying to equate it "internet popularity man!". Which is missing the point and doesn't even apply here since IS is going to sell shitloads. Which is what you're complaining about in the first place, even though you haven't seen the show.

It sold less because he's an asshole. Big difference.

Two of the most popular genres? Now that's debatable. Of course good animation helps but it doesn't guarantee fantastic sales.

Quote:

Didn't say it couldn't. The point was you implied only cliche scenario's sold.

Now that you've elaborated I see what you mean.

Dude the movie's selling was a given, I thought there was no need to even mention the movies when I was talking about the TV series. If I was talking about the movie's I would of stated it.

Yeah it hyped up but didn't really help sales. Other than the music.

I'm not missing the point at all, you shouldn't make random references to 2ch in a sales discussion.

No more of this. We're ruining Something's thread. Stop. I can't be sorting through your lack of grammar anymore. It's starting to affect my own.

He's been an asshole since day 1, he sold less (still did well, just not up to his usual standards) because he did something unexpected off him that his fanbase didn't like, sound familiar?

Quote:

Than name these genres that sell better. To help you out I'll list the best selling tv series of recent times... or since Eva anyway... Bakemonogatari, Gundam SEED Destiny, Gundam SEED, Code Geass and Macross Frontier.

It doesn't take a genius to realize that a well produced anime of a show combining popular elements is going to sell well.

Quote:

I did not imply that.

Yeah.. the Gurren Lagann team working on P&S really helped the music sales...

2ch popularity and anime sales actually have good correlation the majority of the time. If an anime is heavily discussed on 2ch it generally sales well.

Winter update:
Starry☆Sky starts out at 3,766, DVD-only.

Level E isn't looking so hot at 1,896, also DVD-only.

Fall update:
Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai Vol. 3 starts out at 16,574/4,385 for 20,959. still topping 20k first week.

To Aru Majutsu no Index II Vol. 2 is 11,195/4,263 for 15,458.

Star Driver Vol. 2 starts at 6,022/3,175 for 9,197. Quite a tumble from 12,392 first week for Vol. 1 (and eventual 14.2k) but Vol. 1 ranked multiple times so Vol. 2 should do just fine. There is probably a small group that bought Vol. 1 only for the insert song though.

Yosuga no Sora Vol. 3 does 5,415/1,164 for 6,579.

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes Vol. 2 starts at 4,901/1,392 for 6,293. Say it adds 1k BDs next week, it'll be quite close to Vol. 1. I guess this will have some consistency.

Motto To LOVE-Ru Vol. 4 does 3,406/2,344 for 5,750

Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls Vol. 4 does 3,314/1,839 for 5,153

Sora no Otoshimono Forte Vol. 3 does 2,557/1,356 for 3,913.

Various others that only ranked on BD:
KamiNomi Vol. 2 is 2,429.
Panty&Stocking Vol. 3 is 1,887.
SoreMachi Vol. 3 is 1,642.
MM! Vol. 3 is 1,009.

And DVD-only:
Otome Youkai Zakuro Vol. 4 brings it down to 1,767. Ouch.
Tegami Bachi Reverse Vol. 3 is 1,505.

Past seasons:
And a bunch of summer shows are ending or getting close.

All fairly low ranked, except for Strike Witches 2 which does 9,440/2,493 for 11,933 in its final volume's first week. Yay SW2. HSOTD does decently too.

Spring updates:
K-ON!!
!! Vol 1: 42,433 (12 wk)
!! Vol 2: 39,247 (*9 wk)
!! Vol 3: 38,747 (*7 wk)
!! Vol 4: 38,019 (*5 wk)
!! Vol 5: 39,707 (*5 wk)
!! Vol 6: 36,756 (*5 wk)
!! Vol 7: 34,855 (*5 wk)
!! Vol 8: 30,115 -> 33,288 (*2 wk) - adds 3,173 BDs.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Some prices down DVD sets:
Cardcaptor Sakura box 2 from Rondo Robe Selection does 2,337.
Shakugan no Shana box 2 from the same does 2,062
Shakugan no Shana II box 1, ditto, 1,832.

And BD boxes:
Rahxephon does 1,648. I guess I thought it would do a little more.
Maria†Holic does 1,090.

This is the first time that neither Trailblazer nor Shoushitsu have charted in... uh, since release?

Busy busy week! Only new Vol. 1 next week is Kimi ni Todoke but it should very easily be the #3 seller of the season. Though the gap ahead and behind will be pretty large. Moreso ahead.

Oh and feel free to point out typos and stuff. I like these to be clean but it's a lot of text to closely proofread.

I thought To Love-Ru had already had one announced (an adaptation of a spinoff manga) though maybe not (guess it will only be a matter of time regardless if it's still selling well enough)

Milky Holmes is part of a big mixed-media franchise, so it probably depends on how far they want to take it.

To LOVE-Ru already has Darkness announced then unannounced but it's basically guaranteed.

Hyakka Ryouran, maybe. If they anted to they could do a second season and stay well over the Manabi line, I assume.

A list for DVD >100 was posted. Note, these aren't all the first weeks but the >100 list doesn't list number of weeks or previous week's numbers, plus it only has a few numbers listed so you have to kind of guess what a release did based on that.

100 *1,161
102 Keroro Gunsou 1th Season v1
103 Otomeito Party♪ 2010
115 Saint Seiya The Lost Canvas Season 2 v1
116 Watashi no Yasashikunai Senpai LE

Unfortunately there's no reference number past #125 so it's hard to even estimate anything below Fortune Arterial.

There's some info in here though. Fortune Arterial v3 DVD must have done about 900, added to its 1,211 BDs so we're looking at about ~2,100 total. Guess it's going to be about a 2k series.

Panty & Stocking at #153 added maybe 750 DVDs to 1,887 BDs, so perhaps ~2,650 total.

If this was the first week for Bakuman. v2, that doesn't bode too well. BDs didn't rank at a 639 threshold and DVDs were #174... maybe 600 copies? Thankfully the second season was already planned, plus I assume they're banking on manga sales (and general Jump sales) more than anything video-related.

Mitsudomoe, DenYuuDen, MM, Soredemo, Shukufuku, Shiki, Kaminomi are all probably down around 350-500.

A number of priced down sets did in the low-mid hundreds.

160 Emotion the Best Silent Moebius DVD Box
187 Dai Mahou Touge DVD Box
263 Nurse Witch Komugi-chan Magikarte & Z DVD Box
278 Kemeko Deluxe! DVD Box v2
279 Kobaru Biyori DVD Box
*** Emotion the Best Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto DVD Box
*** Kodomo no Omocha DVD Box Chuugakusei Box v2

If #125 was 917 copies, these probably did... I dunno, between 200 and 700? That indicates to me that priced down bare-bones DVD sets really don't have to move much of anything to be worthwhile. Might bring in a couple tens of thousands of dollars (like, $15-50k average for the sub-ranking boxes? Minus the retailer cut). Must be better than just letting your catalog titles sit doing nothing, at least.

I'm pretty sure Bakuman derives revenue from ratings. It's not a late night anime and should follow the traditional model for a TV series, so I doubt the producers give a shit about disc sales.
