That is kind of interesting as it doesn't seem to be the kind of series that tends to rank strongly among the Japanese otaku buyers. It getting a prompt simulcast and even English subtitles on the Blu-ray seems they were trying to target the Western audience from the start too somewhat. I doubt that the Western audience would be importing the release in large numbers, though. Sounds good to me if it does do well though as I'm enjoying it a good bit (more so after the second episode, even though the first was fun) even if it's not an absolute favorite at this point.

Approx 87,000 BDs so first week sales of approx 132,000. About a 9-10k improvement over the second volume's first week. Although Vol. 1's total sales are still a bit over Vol 2. Very consistent percentagewise, though, given the numbers we're talking about.

For anyone keeping track:
MSGUC3 BD 38,075pt (87k)
MSMM1 BD 23,975pt

MSGUC3 DVD 5,348pt (45k)
MSMM1 BD 707pt

Not that it's a simple 1:1 ratio (especially with Gundam) at all but 100k first week for Madoka really doesn't seem possible because of how it'll do far less DVDs. IS had 693 points by the end, and sold 7,794 DVDs. Again, not a simple ratio here but I'd expect maybe 8k DVDs perhaps for Madoka, 8.5k if it picks up in the last two weeks. Not going to hazard a guess at BDs, but surely it won't be 92k... kind of impossible eh? Still an outside chance of it giving Bake a run for its money, however, provided it can repeatedly rank for as absurdly long as that show did. Which I'd be a little surprised at.
I still say it does over 80k BDs the first week and 10k DVDs. At this point it'll definitely outdo Bake still.

80k BDs is possible, yes. Gundam has a rather low points to sales ratio on the BDs (2.2 sales per point) while Madoka ought to be 3 or higher I'd think. IS was 3.14 though that includes the couple days after release so it's probably like 3.2 or something for first week. Madoka's points * 3 is already about 75k.

The fact that it's still two weeks away is hard to believe. April seems like the longest month ever... and it's still #4.

Someone, I forget where I read it, mentioned that Tiger and Bunny is pretty popular among fujoshi. But, how much do they make up of the otaku BD buying crowd?

I assume the sales rankings that Westlo mentioned are for the BDs.

Fujoshi power is strong, the difference between Durarara and Baccano is that one of them had a massive fujoshi following. And yes they're going crazy over T&B, Fujoshi's are obviously digging "Mr Legend" lol...

And yes I'm talking about BDs, Tiger and Bunny is beating Madoka atm....

::shrugs:: It's not like we're just pulling shit out of our asses at random, although my original point is that I don't think it'll hit 100k, and I've said before that I think the points are weighted too heavily at the top.

But there's historical data that can be used to make estimates. When data trends are reasonably consistent in indicating a minimum (usually three or more real-world sales per ranking point), it would be more "lol" to just ignore it as a possibility. It's a shame we don't have full pre-order ranking tallies for Bake, although even those might not help since a lot of Vol 1's sales were aft6er the first week.

IS didn't move the 40k or so that was a possibility, but it too moved a bit over 3 per point. It was about on par with AB! there. K-ON! was similar, or a little higher. Certainly it's possible Madoka's ratio dips to around 2, though, like Unicorn. That would put us closer to 50k minimum BDs as of today. In any event I expect Madoka to have a relatively small second week - with all the delays there's been lots of time for anyone interested to preorder, plus by now B&Ms should be faring better with distro.

So what's my prediction? At a fairly conservative guess let's say 2.5x. At 25k pts that's 62k, at 30k that's 75k. I think DVDs will fall short of 10k. Unless, as you say, they don't print that much, which would be its own constraint.

As for Tiger and Bunny, if it does do well on BD, and does sell largely to females 9I wouldn't know if that's true), then that would be a first. I'm not watching T&B but kind of hope that's the case anyway, because then maybe production committees will finally stop releasing shows like Durarara and Zakuro as DVD only...

And on that note, looks like this week's numbers just came out. Post will be forthcoming.

Anime gets 26 of the top 50 BDs, and by comparison only 25 of top 100 DVDs. Anime dominates BD as usual.

Winter update:
Mitsudomoe Zouryouchuu! v1 does 1,156, only BDs rank.

Infinite Stratos adds 2,137/1,274 for 32,779.

Freezing adds 504 to cross the 6k mark with 6,242.

Starry Sky v2 does 3,350.

Onii-chan missed the top 100 its third week, but is back in the fourth with a total of 3,141 BDs.

Fall update:
OreImo is 15,959/4,035 for 19,994 Ooh, just missed 20k opening week this time for v4.

Index II v3 is 11,473/3,929 for 15,402.

Hakuouki Hekketsu v4 does 9,381.

Star Driver v3 is 5,722/2,764 for 8,486.

Motto To LOVE-Ruv5 starts at 3,242/2,201 for 5,443.

Hyakka Ryouran v5 adds 377 for 4,898.

Yosuga v5, which is BD only (the DVDs ended after 4 volumes) does 1,341. The earlier DVD and BD releass for Vol. 4 did 7,709 so the total is 9,050 for Sora's arc.

Ah, so Fortune Arterial v4 did rank this time, meaning over 3 weeks it's done 1,520

Arakawa 2 v4 sees DVDs missing the rankings, so only 1,026 BDs.

Poor Bakuman, only 381 BDs for v3 and no DVD rank.

Past seasons:
Basara 2 v7, final volume, jumps to 12,027 over previous volumes that were starting around 9k.

Kuroshitsuji II v7 gets 6,123 DVDs.

Hetalia v5 adds 1,632 for 8,213. Makes back a bit of the gap from Vols 1-4 but not all of it.

Zakuro v5 is down to 1,629.

Shiki v6 charts, 533 BDs.

K-ON!!:
!! Vol 1: 42,433 (12 wk)
!! Vol 2: 39,247 (*9 wk)
!! Vol 3: 38,747 (*7 wk)
!! Vol 4: 38,019 (*5 wk)
!! Vol 5: 40,484 (*5 wk)
!! Vol 6: 36,756 (*5 wk)
!! Vol 7: 35,144 (*6 wk)
!! Vol 8: 36,205 (*6 wk)
!! Vol 9: 38,029 -> 39,206 (*4 wk) - adds another 1,177 BDs. C'mon 40k.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Gundam UC v3 does 87,012/44,705 for 131,717.

Mononoke/Bakeneko BD box does quite well at 3,136.

Shana II DVD Box v2 does 2,018, meaning there are about 2018 people wishing the BDs had not been announced right after this started shipping... myself included.

Does anyone know what happened with to Togainu no Chi anime? I can't seem to find it on amazon.co.jp and I also can't find any info on the sales. I can't seem to find any info on the DVD on togainu.tv either.
I'm wondering how it did... I think it totally bombed though.

The individual DVD releases got canceled and it was announced that it would be released as a boxset. I haven't heard anything about it since. I don't think a release date is set yet.

Wow, really? Well, I guess that was to be expected. Thanks for the response!
