Well personally I watched 1-2 back to back and enjoyed the show, just that being in such a strong season (best since spring 2007 easily) I dropped it since I don't have enough time to follow 10+ shows. But I heard constant word of mouth about how good the show was so I watched episode 3 a few nights back and it's back on the watch list for sure. I've heard good things about episode 4 and 5...

After a few lacklustre years with moments of greatness spread around I've been really impressed by 2011 so far... Winter was fantastic for a minor season, Spring is shaping up to be one of the best seasons ever, Summer looks really solid with Usagi Drops, Blood C, Natsume 3, Kamisama Dolls, Sacred Seven, Mago 2 (The Kyoto arc lifts this show considerably.. just like RK's Kyoto arc did) and a few more promising shows.

Fall should be good too... Fate/Zero, Horizon on the Middle of Nowhere, Persona 4, Mirai Nikki and I suspect big guns like the new Code Geass and Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai are also going to join the lineup. Fuck would love if Brains Base came to the party and put out another Baccano/Durarara as well... or even Vamp! from the same author.

Shana III should also be airing this fall...fuck this year is great. Now if Sunrise would just announce that the new Code Geass is a TV series this year would be confirmed for epic.

If there's a true yuri TV series coming in 2011, then I agree.

And IS finally drops off the BD charts, despite the low threshold. I'm a little disappointed Madoka didn't move even 586 DVDs third week. #136 probably means about 400-450. I have to wonder if Madoka will see the same long, long, long tail on BDs (ranking 10+ times) that K-ON! and Bake did. And the Strike Witches BD box was indeed at the high end of its ~5k range. Very impressive.

Winter update:
Gosick v1 does better than I expected. 2,374/865 for 3,239 first week. Should pass 3.5k if it ranks next week. Granted, it also got lucky it came out in a week with a fairly low DVD threshold. Without the DVDs, "2,374" sounds a lot lower than "3,239"

Kimi ni Todoke S2 v3 starts at 5,544 DVDs.

Madoka Magica v1 adds 1,485 BDs for 69,547. No 70k yet, since DVDs missed ranking. Proportionally, Madoka is moving a lot less in subsequent weeks than IS, but I would assume that's because it was delayed a month and thus more of the orders were preorders. I don't think we'll see Madoka chart a huge number of times, now or going forward. It'll just have massive first weeks, strong second weeks, then probably fall off quickly. [Edit: confirmed 456 DVDs, 70,003 total - so it passed 70k this week.]

Fall update:
Hakuouki S2 v5, the final volume, does 10,304. So it solidifies its spot on the 10k+ list.

KamiNomi v4 does 2,363 BDs. [Edit: confirmed 385 DVDs, 2,748 total]

Ochinko v3 moves 1,911 BDs. [Edit: confirmed 410 DVDs, 2,321 total]

OreImo v5 adds another 428 for 21,852.

Ikamusume v5 squeezes in 356 in its second week to pass 6k at 6,558 BDs.

Past seasons:
Amagami SS v13 juuuust makes it, adding 250 for 6,483. Best selling volume of the show now.

It looks like the later weeks of K-ON!! v9 didn't make the monthly BD Top 50 (which I'll post on when I get home and can compare the data to my spreadsheet and see what was actually added) so that's probably the end for it. So sad, final volume is just short of 40k! In terms of official numbers... it obviously passed in reality, but didn't rank.

Final average for K-ON!! is 38,564, a respectable followup to season one's 43,094, particularly for a two cour release.

And so now I replace K-ON!! in the weekly spotlight section with Madoka Magica!

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica:
Vol 1: 68,062 -> 70,003 (*3 wk) - Adds 1,485 BDs and 456 DVDs.
Vol 2: **,*** (** wk)
Vol 3: **,*** (** wk)
Vol 4: **,*** (** wk)
Vol 5: **,*** (** wk)
Vol 6: **,*** (** wk)

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Strike Witches BD Box, second pressing, does an amazing 5,416. So that makes our list of TV anime re-release BD boxes look like this:

¥1356.6m (34,000 * ¥39,900) - Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
¥*456.7m (12,427 * ¥36,750) - Strike Witches (7,011 + 5,416)
¥*356.6m (*9,703 * ¥36,750) - Darker than Black
¥*322.6m (*5,155 * ¥62,580) - Clannad After Story
¥*310.4m (*4,960 * ¥62,580) - Clannad
¥*228.4m (*6,214 * ¥36,750) - Eureka Seven

Zaregoto strikes me as something that's entirely unsuited to be anything other than what it is already.

Is this comment based moreso on the later novels or just the first two volumes translated into English? From the two novels I've read I don't see why this can't be turned into a decent anime. Of course that opinion is subject to change if I read the later novels but aside from learning Japanese I doubt that will ever happen.

Just the first two books, really - even in those, it has quite possibly the most unreliable narrator I've ever encountered in fiction, in ways you just couldn't animate whilst still making sense...

I think IS having its light novels become smash hits might have helped it move more units over the subsequent weeks. Since it has become a big thing it wouldn't surprise me at all if people were picking the novels up for the first time and than decided to jump into the anime afterwards.

Though it can't solely be because of the light novels, after all IS outsells OreNo but when it comes to the LN..

*1, 151,194 *,151,194 Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai vol.8
17, **8,808 *,157,551 IS: Infinite Stratos vol.7

OreNo's first week for Vol 8 nearly outsells an entire month of IS Vol 7 which had a 104k opening week itself. And while there is one volume difference it won't close a 48k gap... (I'm guessing 120k tops for IS Vol 8 opening week)

I don't suppose anyone knows OreNo Vol 6's opening week figures? I believe this came out during the airing of the anime. Also Vol 5 which would've been preanime would be interesting to see as well.

I looked up Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai Vol 5 sales.. and saw the second week did 72k to take it upto 80k total.. I'm guessing the 8k were streetbroken sales.. so first week is kinda 80k... that's pretty massive for a LN without an anime.. Stratos went from 40k to 104k thanks to the anime, no idea about OreNo.

Vol 6 comes out May the 25th, that could do over 100k pre anime..... it really is the heavy hitter of the MF Junko lineup... I'm guessing it's airing in the TBS X MF Junko timeslot which had Stratos, is airing Hidan no Aria and has Mayo Chicki for Summer.

Volume 6 was pre-anime, it came out in May 2010. Volume 7 came out in November, while the anime was airing.

The first Oricon ranking for 文庫 is of April 7th, 2008 so anything before that is unsearchable. Having said that, the entirety of the two franchises have been released since then. Here are the rankings and sales estimates for the weeks following release for the two franchises:

OreImo

V2|*15,312|18,525|
V3|*40,839|13,622|

These are just the weekly estimates provided by Oricon and aren't total calculations. IS had its first volumes rank earlier this year, but not when they came out.
