I highly doubt that though. ;_;
If a very unlikely second season ever happens, the only thing those sales are going to do is remind why they shouldn't.

Light Novel Ranking
*1, 1,211,835 Moshidora
*2, *,328,113 Durarara!! vol.1
*3, *,266,030 Durarara!! vol.2
*4, *,237,196 Durarara!! vol.3

*5, *,221,683 Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu vol.7
*6, *,218,081 Durarara!! vol.4
*7, *,215,358 Toaru Majutsu no Index vol.20
*8, *,210,664 Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu vol.7.5
*9, *,199,506 Toaru Majutsu no Index vol.21
10, *,197,573 Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu vol.8
11, *,194,372 Durarara!! vol.7

Haganai has a chance to go past Durarara once the anime launches, it's obviously the most popular out of all these top ranking series at a pre anime stage.
Since those are sales of novels that were already released being picked up by a lot of people post-anime that doesn't count as an indication of its popularity over Index, as early novels of Index have sold far more than 300k at this point. The latest DRRR release on the portion of the list you posted would be vol 7, which is behind Index vol 21's 199,506. That said, Index vol 22 vs. DRRR vol 8.

12 183,086部 10/10/06 *47日 とある魔術の禁書目録22
15 176,024部 10/06/08 167日 デュラララ!!×8

Index 22 passed DRRR 8's total sales from being on the market for nearly half a year in only a month and a half. Not to mention NT vol 1 sold even better than Index 22 vol 2 in the same amount of time.

Quote:
Massive sales increases, especially considering that Vol 5 couldn't even break 50k for the opening week. FMA all over again though the anime sales have to pick up to really be like that...

15, *39,837 *,349,213 Ao no Exorcist vol. 1
23, *35,399 *,329,033 Ao no Exorcist vol. 2
30, *30,038 *,326,297 Ao no Exorcist vol. 3
40 *25,336 *,297,431 Ao no Exorcist vol. 6
41 *24,707 *,318,442 Ao no Exorcist vol. 5
42 *24,046 *,317,493 Ao no Exorcist vol. 4

I was telling peeps on Mangahelpers that Ao no Exorcist was going to be a bigger breakout hit than Toriko after they received anime shows.. AnE isn't going to be as big as FMA was but it could end up a 500-600k seller... Kinda lessens the blow of Jump knocking back Shingeki no Kyojin... that's like the Haganai of manga atm...
Yep, ratings have also been good and relatively consistent, especially in comparison to SD, Basara, and Code Geass. Guess it just goes to show you have to be a Shounen or Gundam series to do well in that slot. As the airing goes on ratings might pick up even more.

And really looking forward to Kyojin anime in 2012...high likelihood that it will get the Nichigo slot I'd say.

I do wonder why it took the standard otaku-focused 2 eps a disc approach. Surely if any series could have benefited from a slightly more mainstream format, it would be this, I'd think... I guess disc sales were just utterly irrelevant for this kind of show though.

Default Re: Novel/manga adaptations and sales

Amazon Japan just released their top selling books for the first half of 2011. As expected, the top selling book in all of books was The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya (First Press Edition). #2 was Moshidora and #5 was the sixth volume of Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai. A couple later volumes of the Bakemonogatari series ranked 11th/14th and the 19th ranked book was the eighth volume of OreImo. But above all the rest lies Haruhi.

Top selling Anime-related/light novels:
  1. The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya (First Pressing Edition)
  2. Moshidora
  3. Management
  4. Boku was Tomodachi ga Sukunai 6
  5. Nanamemonogatai
  6. Hanamonogatari
  7. Ore no Imouto 8
  8. Infinite Stratos 7
  9. Baka to Test 9
  10. New Testament: A Certain Magical Index
  11. Infinite Stratos 6
  12. Zero's Familiar 20
  13. Saiun Koni Monogatari: Murasagi no Gyoukuza (first)
  14. Spice and Wolf 16
(List# is of the novels, not overall placement)

I would guess that the anime served to get new people interested that typically watch TV rather than read books. That's also likely why they adapted it into a live-action movie released this past weekend.

The book has consistently placed within the top 15 on Oricon's weekly rankings for all of books this year; mostly within the top 5. It's sold nearly 700,000 copies this year alone to go well over 2 million copies sold. They've likely achieved their goal of selling a lot of books.

As for why it took the otaku method of sales for purchases, it's anyone's guess.

-- 12 *,563 *5,146 *2 Break Blade v5

*2 -- 6,863 *6,863 *1 Girls Dead Monster starring LiSA Tour 2010 Final -Keep The Angel Beats!-

Full post will come with the full list on Thursday or Friday but there probably won't be much to add beyond a few BDs. I already fixed everything up up in the finalized formatting to save myself time later. But again, this DVD list goes much deeper than the usual Full 100. This will be so useful for slow weeks. 419 threshold!

But some brief comments:
MadoMagi v2 - adds 3,607/1,091 for 67,987 after two weeks.
MadoMagi v1 - another 1,079! Total is now 74,118. It's already up 12k over week one.
Tiger&Bunny v1 - adds, but is this all it would have been at after two weeks? Up 3,475/700 to 19,974. Still a touch under 20k which doesn't feel right. Though it'd worth noting that it only came back in stock on 6/03 and this period ended 6/05. I still feel like it ought to reach at least 25k especially since we got two weeks of DVD sales.
A Channel v1 - adds 631 DBs for 6,036. Over 6k!
Lucky Star BD Box - up 693 to 8,524. It's past both Clannads now, though we only got one week of After Story sales. It almost passed DtB.

¥1356.6m (34,000 * ¥39,900) - Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
¥*456.7m (12,427 * ¥36,750) - Strike Witches (7,011 + 5,416)
¥*356.6m (*9,703 * ¥36,750) - Darker than Black
¥*340.1m (*8,524 * ¥39,900) - Lucky Star
¥*322.6m (*5,155 * ¥62,580) - Clannad After Story
¥*310.4m (*4,960 * ¥62,580) - Clannad
¥*228.4m (*6,214 * ¥36,750) - Eureka Seven

That's a very large second week for something sold supposedly 14k copies. It's obvious that this is the effect of it being put back in stock slowly. I wouldn't be surprised if it has a gigantic leap in sales next week.

A big >100 list for the week of the 23rd, with enough anchor points to get very close estimates (which I put in [~***] form) for quite a lot of stuff.

--- -- *1,020 *1,020 *1 Tantei Opera Milky Holmes v5
--- -- **,971 **,971 *1 Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? v3
--- -- **,907 **,907 *1 Nintama rantarou 18th Series v1
--- -- **,884 **,884 *1 Fortune Arterial Akai Yakusoku v6

126 -- **,813
132 -- **,779
136 -- [~750] *1 Yumekui Merry v3
144 -- **,725
145 -- [~720] *1 Shinrei Tantei Yakumo v5
153 -- [~675] *1 Gosick v2
159 -- **,643
169 -- [~600] *1 Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt v6
179 -- [~550] *1 Shiki v8
182 -- **,532
192 -- [~500] *1 MM! v6
201 -- [~480] *1 Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu v8
211 -- [~460] *1 Shinryaku! Ikamusume v6
214 -- [~450] *1 Mitsudomoe Zouryouchuu! v3
218 -- [~440] *1 Dragon Crisis v4
223 -- [~430] *1 Bakuman v5
229 -- **,425
236 -- **,413
239 -- [~400] *1 Meitantei Conan part 19 v5
242 -- [~390] *1 OVA Sayuki Gaiden v1 Sakuragumo no Chou RE
243 -- [~380] *1 Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai v5
255 -- [~370] *1 Rio -RainbowGate!- v2
300 -- **,341
*** -- **,*** *1 Hourou Musuko v2
*** -- **,*** *1 Fractale v2
*** -- **,*** *1 Moshidora v1
*** -- **,*** *1 EMOTION the Best Worlf's Rain DVD Box
*** -- **,*** *1 EMOTION the Best Mahou Tsukai Tai! TV Series DVD Box
*** -- **,*** *1 EMOTION the Best Mahou no Princess Milky Momo DVD Box v1

For Moshidora, even if you took the best possible DVD number (340) and best possible BD number (645) it's still short of 1k. Ouch.

Hourou and Fractale both continue to move basically no DVDs... also, didn't realize Rio's second volume was out. it didn't chart BD so it's probably right at or below 1k combined too.

Merry did 750 DVDs, give or take.

I wouldn't feel too bad about Moshidora considering it had great ratings.
