While out on the highway doing an early morning test run on Natsumi's RZ motorcycle following a tune up, Miyuki & Natsumi are passed by a rider on a black Ducati SS whose riding style is very familiar...Ken?? Nah, couldn't be since he denies being in that area at that time but other officers have also encountered the same rider with one even saying that the Ducati rider even resembles Ken! An evil twin? A double? A robot? Alien abduction? Actually, the rider turns out to be who Ken suspected all along-His dad Daimaru, who mistakes Natsumi for Ken's girlfriend based on her riding skills (Much to Miyuki's dismay) & a couple of rumors that he heard about Ken seeing someone. He's also looking into opening a motorcycle shop here in Tokyo so we'll be seeing more of him in the near future. Some little things (Including a tet-a-tet with another biker) soon convince Daimaru that perhaps Miyuki would be better for Ken than Natsumi (Whom he'll keep for himself since he likes her too). He'll change his mind about Natsumi soon enough, though...

In the first season (and a little of the second season) I absolutely adored every episode with Daimaru in it.

Too bad we don't really see him in Full Throttle until the final episode, though.

God, Chie's army...is it bad that the first thing I thought, when seeing the American, was, "Do we even let redheads wield firearms in our military?"
I kid, I kid. ![]() This episode did make me wonder how Yoriko and Aoi managed to pass any kind of accuracy requirements for the force, let alone any subsequent tests they may have had to partake in each year that they were on it. Then again, I know absolutely nothing about what it takes to be a cop on these shores. My memory of the previous challenge is hazy...was Yoriko's shooting better in that episode? Maybe not, since Miyuki and Natsumi put forth so much effort to play an in-game version of "capture the flag" with Yoriko as the flag. Oh, and you gotta love the idea of Sabu looking up to his older brother for being a COLLEGE GRAD turned criminal. Great. Just think of all the money wasted by Mom and Dad, figuratively speaking. Wasteful Addendum: Natsumi is a beast and I love her. |

In what universe would Daimaru actually think that Ken could handle someone with Natsumi's personality? Does he not know his own son? (Then again, who knows how long it's been since they've lived in the same town/shared the same space for a prolonged period of time).
Or maybe Ken is truly and only romantically-impaired when it comes to Miyuki specifically... |

As outrageously improbably as the premise for this character introduction is, it's hard not to instantly like Aoi. The truth is that I often forget that "she" is a "he", until something harshly intrudes on some poor shmoe's reality, in the show.
And the premise swiftly becomes pretty sweet when you consider the secondary characters that are brought into this week's little dramedy. The ones that count most here (Nakajima, because of his male perspective, and the ardent admirer), come to understand and to believe that Aoi is quite a guy, un-ironically, by how he plays the game. Even the kid brother doesn't seem particularly shaken by the way things end up playing out. ![]() My only question, I guess, is "How the heck did that girl even know which station her old high school idol was working at?" I know, I know - suspension of disbelief and all that. This episode, which is the first episode of the TV series proper, also marks the first use of one of my all-time favorite anime openings, "Boku de Arutameni" ("To Be Myself"), by the Flying Kids. I've constantly talked myself out of buying the group's "Best of..." compilation just for this one song, but it can't even be had through Japanese iTunes, so... I imagine that someday I'll give in, as I like at least one other song on the CD...either way, it's one of the few songs that, on a good day, I can almost stumble all the way through in Japanese. The accompanying animation is so touching in its own way, as you see all of our main players getting together for a an outing and a laugh, while still remaining cheerful in the scenes that depict their daily working lives. A friend of mine describes it as the ultimate, ideal visual of people who love their work and are dedicated to those they've sworn(?) to help. Even if they mostly deal with vehicular infractions. Their are some classic images for me here, like Natsumi's leap over the railing, Nakajima's late arrival to the party (and Natsumi playful "hand as gun" response"), as well as the visual of all five of them staring out at that bridge together, near sunset. Further proof that even though our two leading ladies carry most of it, this IS an ensemble show.Truly, this opening gives me the warm and fuzzies, hardcore. ![]() I can take or leave the closer, "Thank you, Love". Haha, I never even thought about that. I do like the elegance of Oshou's cup there, with the waves. Last edited by Shsway : 02-07-2011 at 08:11 PM. |

Pure luck. Yoriko aces her exam by rolling her numbered pencils to make guesses on the multiple choice question test. She shoots with her eyes closed yet manages to hit bullseyes. |

Miyuki & Natsumi are walking with Ken (Groceries in hand) with plans to cook a homemade dinner for him and while he says they really don't have to do this (He appreciates it, I'm sure) Natsumi ribs him a bit about maybe having a woman stashed at his apartment. As it turns out, when they get there they not only find a young, attractive woman at Ken's place but she claims to be his mother! Well, sort of...Meet Sena Wakabayashi, 20 years old & Daimaru Nakajima's fiance (They met out on the open road & it was literally love at first sight). Turns out that Daimaru has only 1 condition for them to marry-Ken has to call Sena "Mom" as a way for him to give them his blessing. He's not too keen on the idea but it takes Sena's "Super 7" being stolen & her being nearly run over by the car thieves to finally get Ken to call Sena "Mom". Love her car!
Next time-File 18, "The Strike Brigade" Quickie quiz: Sena's car the "Super 7" also plays a big part in another anime series by Kouske Fujishima-Which one?
