Default What happened to Crunchyroll?

It seems every other release has botched subtitle fonts. And the increase of question marks replacing full translated lines are increasing by the episode. Did they bite off more than they can chew this season?

I'm just amazed when I can get something to play without turning into a slide show, at which point I give up and watch other versions. The handful of holdover shows with crap localized subs this season (Hanasaku, Sekaiichi, one or two others I've already forgotten since I as a rule refuse to use CR for such shows) is also annoying, and I'm really sick of their near-total inability to translate on-screen text (fucking lazy).

CR has always been the only remotely acceptable streaming site and the only one I will support, but I'm starting to lose faith in them too. The allure of "watching legit" doesn't have much pull either, considering that $5 a month is totally inconsequential against the ~$700 a month I already spend on JP importing.

I think my CR membership is up very soon. Not sure if I'll be renewing.

So, did I happen to bite on their free 30-day membership trial offer, in spite of the lack of appeal streaming anime holds for me, just for shits and giggles, only to end up choosing a crap time to do so? It kind of sounds like it.

Curious. I watched Blue Exorcist ep 1 in 780p mode earlier this afternoon and don't recall having any problems with the stream or the subtitles.

Probably. I'm not sure how total the service problems are, but the complaints go back to last November. I didn't notice initially because I dumped them for almost the whole Fall season for translation-related reasons, but the playback issues are either worse now or just as bad and the threads in their forums about it are still active last I checked. Certainly I still get the slowdown almost every weekend, to the point where it is not watchable.

If you can watch anime Monday through Thursday, you may be in better shape. Unfortunately I almost always cannot.

Hmmm. Perhaps instead of reading news during my lunch break at work, I shall try watching an episode of anime. Not the most comfortable of circumstances for anime-watching, though.

Blue Exorcist isn't a Crunchyroll license though, they just stream it.

When I first noticed the '?' this season, it was during a scene with garbled dialog, but then I saw it again in at least one other show where the line sounded pretty clear. My guess is that the translator is too strapped for time, and didn't go back to check for untranslated lines.

This is the only major issue I've come across when streaming from CR, so I might just start waiting to watch premiers and hope someone else catches these and gets the script finalized before I get to it.

I noticed a "?" during a line of dialogue in Nichijou ep. 4 (watched it pretty early so I don't know if it was fixed since then or not), and a "Title Here" during the title on Astarotte no Omocha ep. 3. Also been noticing the changing fonts lately too, some big, some small... I'm guessing Crunchyroll is doing things as cheaply as possible lately for lots of titles, but hopefully they follow up on feedback to responses about that. They did have a time where some of the series were getting below-par subtitles, and it happened to be right when I started paying and for the title I was wanting (Nogizaka Haruka S2...). They later seemed to have things straightened out, though, so maybe they'll come around again here too.

This is maybe the largest reason why I sub to them, the convenience of being able to watch the shows anywhere I happen to have free time and an internet connection.

I was so disappointed in the quality of their subtitles for Kemono no Sou-ja Erin that I find it difficult to recommend this otherwise excellent work. They couldn't even figure out the correct gender in some places. I'm glad I kept my fansubs.

The ever-reliable Quarkboy does sub the occasional show for CR like Level E last season.
