Why a store doesn't reveal the art of the box before vol. 1 is for sale? Would they not have more people willing to pay the extra money that way?

I suppose they just weren't done at that point. Getting art done for the individual volume covers was going to be Buriki's main priority.

And now I've sent 10,000 yen to a proxy service to bid on it for me. What the fuck is wrong with me.

You know, I think that's the trick to getting your anime cheap. Pay MSRP at a specialty store with an exclusive extra, sell the extra at a ludicrously inflated price, and BAM you just bought all of Haganai for about 50% off. (Okay it would only work in rare circumstances. And who the hell would part with that box unless they hated both Sena and Yozora? Actually who would buy Haganai if they hated them?)
I've considered before that some people might sell the boxes to help fund their anime habit. Seems risky and I'm not sure how much it would help. Sure, they're selling it for 20,000 yen, but they're paying ~2000 more per volume and I assume YAJ gets a portion of what they sell it for.

Quote:
Desirability of retailer-exclusive extras also seems to vary significantly from store to store so that calculation has to be baked in somewhere. It's like, who wants to be the store that has the exclusive Nodoka poster when the store down the street from you in Akiba is offering an Azunyan poster? (I love and adore you Nodoka but let's not kid ourselves on who is the more popular K-ON! girl.)
I assume those stores are just assuming they'll get sales from some people that those particular characters and items appeal to, instead of those people going to Amazon... or something. Or perhaps just something to get existing customers to buy there instead of Amazon or some other store.

Probably worth noting that a lot of manga and LNs also do the store exclusive bonus thing (seems like a good way to try to hook some young otaku-in-training/potential future otaku and eventually turn some into BD buyers) and I don't think you have an Amazon situation there, where there's a store with a huge discount competing. But there is always used sales.

Anyway, also probably worth noting that the same 2-3 stores tend to get the really nice bonuses for those, which are alternate covers. But the disparity isn't as singificant, since postcards/artcards can be just as, if not more, appealing and other stores can get some nice ones.

This is my biggest annoyance with the store-exclusive-artbox system. You have no idea what you're paying a premium for when its time to get the first volume. You don't know if you're paying the extra ~2k yen per volume for something amazing like this, something pretty nice like OreImo, or so-so to bland box that you would not remotely consider spending such money on, such as what most people seem to think of the K-On! box.

It's also worth remembering that a lot of those stores offer point cards or other loyalty programs. While blu-rays appear to be listed at MSRP a lot of customers probably do in effect get a discount (10%?), so it's not quite as big a gap to Amazon prices as it appears.

I was surprised, i didn't like that box at all to be honest.
It would be nice to have a box to have them all in though.

And I ended up placing a bid (a different auction that ended sooner, same price) and won. So soon I will be the proud owner of a ~22,700 yen artbox. Suddenly, 20k yen for a lot of other things looks like a bargain.

And I'm sure we will have awesome cover art like previous season. I wonder if we will have an OVA for this one...
