I wouldn't worry about that. Distributors/production companies have their own records which matter more than the Oricon numbers we get. As long as you know you ordered it and supported the show, that's all that matters.

Most likely October when it'll ship. If they sent numbers when it was ordered, there's way to correct that if you cancelled that order between now and when it shipped.
I'd always wanted some direct confirmation of this too, for preorders in my case. I mean, will a preorder that still stands at release day be counted even if the order is being held reasons of S&H policy? My guess has always been yours, that it's only reported the week it's shipped out/charged.

And in that case, anything I buy doesn't come out at the end of the month doesn't count towards the Oricon totals (so +1 all Mouretsu volumes [+2 for v5] for eample!). Essentially the only Oricon numbers that would count my purchase are most final week releases, and occasional preceding week releases if they get a second week. Bit of a shame, but of course the "importers who had their items held a few weeks" group is going to account for a tiny portion of any release.

Of course, that said, it brings another question. Since every companies have their own records, who are willing to pay for the Oricon numbers? Since it is so expensive...

Anyone who needs to do market research. Knowing how you're selling is one thing (and yes, a distributor will have the real sales data, Oricon is just the best source we can access) but you'll also want to know how others in the industry are selling.

Echoing something's response: any distributor will have their own real numbers, but not anyone else's. Oricon's numbers allow them to generally compare what they're doing to the rest of the market and give a decent estimate to what's going on.

You're also looking at possible news sites like Mantan who'll subscribe to get numbers.

Default KA Esuma bookstores

Considering we talk about novels in here from time to time and it doesn't fit in the Chu2koi anime thread, I figured this would be the best place to post this.

Suffice to say, the CM for Kyoukai no Kanata and the Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai! anime have already helped KyoAni tremendously. When the latter was first released in May 2011, it was sold in around 20-24 bookstores. The sequel (and Coppelia) wasn't many more bookstores. Kyoukai started in about 35-40. All of these include the KyoAni Shop!

As of today, there are a total of 349 bookstores in Japan that are carrying the full KA Esuma library (5 novels total). That is a huge increase and definitely worth what they've put in thus far. Here's hoping we see more added (including easier ways to ship internationally).

Default Madoka Magica, 600k units reported

EnigmaticWarrior posted this in the GA thread for the Madoka movies, and while watching I noticed at one point that claim 600,000 units of DVDs and BDs sold for Madoka.

This is what we have from Oricon:
DVD: 61,406
BD: 364,936
Total: 426,342

So, approximately 71% coverage from the claimed 600k number.

I really should be centralizing all these bits of "Oricon reported sales vs distributor claimed shipments/sales" information. Maybe I'll try that...

Default Oricon vs. Distributor sales/shipping claims

This post is for keeping track of comparisons between what publishers/distributors claim in terms of sales (or shipments), and what percentage of that is covered by the available Oricon data. They'll be listed in alphabetical order, broken down according to however we get the distributor reports. Where we have multiple claimed numbers for different parts of a franchise, I've done a total and indented the individual claims underneath.

NOTE: Sold numbers will be lower than shipped numbers, so these data points are not all directly comparable, but they will provide good ballparks estimates. Where we have distributors specifically saying sold, it's been bolded.

I've got a couple for you, something:

1.1 million - Claimed (Source, 2011-11-06)

Haruhi (2006 airing)
