It's not the cliché ridden high school episodes, necessarily, it's the fact that the general plot is well trodden ground and pretty cliché overall, not just the high school bits.

I enjoy it, but it's pretty damn flawed. It's flawed with moments of brilliance is the best way I can put it. (And the moments of brilliance mostly consist of "damn that sure looked awesome")

That's a fluke, right? RIGHT?
Hah, well, if you asked anyone who follows sales shortly after GC started airing or was solicited, I think most, including myself, would have expected sales in this range. The only reason it's slightly surprising is that it really had not been performing at a 10k level recently. I admit I have not followed its sales closely, because I'm not a fan of the title or all that interested, but it never really seemed to surge. On the other hand, this has a very recent precedent...

...That being Haganai. Haganai ended up having very very similar sales distribution and accumulated points to GC. It sold 7764/2197 to GC's 7164/2878 (virtually identical, just shift 600 BDs to DVDs). Like GC, Haganai seemed to hang out outside the top 100 (and thus outside of what I really pay attention to) most of the time. And it didn't surge at the end either.

Haganai v1 BD chart
Guilty Crown v1 BD chart
120 day time period with 300 lower bound.
[Edit: argh, damnit stalker keeps loading up the wrong pages when I link chart results, even though it looks fine for me when I copy them. Anyway suffice to say they're similar. You may need to refresh them after loading.]

Haganai surprised fans when it sold 10k too. Expectations were down around 7-8k, about where I would have placed GC if I'd looked at it recently. Seems like they have much in common, in terms of buying patterns. GC just had a deeper slump in the middle which is probably why it's a bit more surprising.

The threshold for today is 3000, I'm really not surprised at all that it didn't make it given how much it added last week. It'll appear on Thursday.

As opposed to Haganai or just about any other show?

I never would have guess this to do that good... Surprising...

I'm not sure if you've actually seen Guilty Crown? Guilty Crown is unbelievably generic. The writing is the most generic thing ever, play by play, beat by beat you know what is going to happen. Not just any other show is like that. Madoka Magica wasn't like that, Bakemonogatari wasn't like that, hell even K-ON! wasn't like that even though it's a fairly simple slice-of-life. I didn't know what was going to happen in K-ON!.

Nothing is truly original, but good writing can make well trodden ground a great experience. For me Guilty Crown is still fun, but for some this is an absolute painful mess. Haganai, while the same old stuff, was well written enough to avoid tropes that genre is often plagued with.

Come to think of it.. Papa no Iu Koto o Kikinasai is the Guilty Crown of it's romantic comedy yet slightly "ecchi" genre, I forget the genre name. But Papa no Iu Koto o Kikinasai is as generic as it gets in spots, just like Guilty Crown.

If I were making a list of the most generic shows ever, I really don't think PapaKiki would be on the list. It's certainly not experimental, on-of-a-kind art house stuff, but I'd think one could find many many better examples, especially if you've watched a few episodes.

Oh certainly. I've realised that the show had something going for it when it had that one grim moment in episode 2 or 3, but it's still got a fair bit of cliché boy and girl relationship mishaps. That personally drags it down for me so I might be a bit bias, but I know people are more tolerant of clichés within a certain genre than I am.

Post Idolmaster G4U Vol. 4 sales

http://yaraon.blog109.fc2.com/blog-entry-7015.html

18,179 this time.

Heh, so for the standalone I said this: "Idolmaster v4 sells 5703/1357 for 7,060 (no G4U data yet). A 10% increase on standalone v3 wk1, though that's from going up almost 600 BDs, which I guess is 600 people switching from G4U to standalone for this volume."

Sho'nuff. G4U last time was 18,992, about 800 higher, which is very closely offset by the higher BD sales. (Okay, it could also be coincidence.) That means total first week sales of the last two volumes are:

Vol. 3: 25,438
Vol. 4: 25,239

199 copies or less than eight tenths of a percent. Doesn't get too much closer than that. It'd be somewhat funny if the standalone just keeps going up, and hits like 8k or 9k by Vol. 9. Most likely it'll start to drop soon though.
