Default Re: Anime Sales in Japan - 2012

Thanks. All these questions came to me because of Horizon v3 performance in the charts. While v2 made something like 20k points before it went on sale, v3 is 4500 points short of that with 2 weeks to go. So I questioned myself, Is there going to be a big drop through v2 -> v3 or is this sales difference between consecutive volumes tied to the stronger competition this month (Unicorn 5, two Nise volumes, last volumes of UtaPri and Steins;Gate and a lot of popular non-anime titles within the top 30)? Maybe it's a combination of both.

Points are generally rather meaningless post volume 1. Horizon is looking to have a fairly standard dropoff in sales, major drops either happen after volume 1, or they don't happen at all.

http://jbbs.livedoor.jp/bbs/read.cgi...1293278942/292

Full list is out, and the following was added. Original post has been updated accordingly.

2012 01/30~02/05 BD List
-- (35) 52 *,650 113,913 10 Kidou Senshi Gundam UC v4
-- (37) 10 *,631 **5,779 *2 Uta no Prince-sama Maji LOVE 1000% v5
-- (39) *5 *,526 **8,024 *2 Working'!! v4
-- (40) 12 *,514 **4,982 *2 Roukyuubu! v5
-- (41) 18 *,512 **3,788 *2 Onegai Teacher BD Box
-- (43) 87 *,487 *24,605 *6 Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon v1
-- (47) 16 *,455 **3,907 *2 Ao no Exorcist v8
-- (48) 13 *,448 **4,333 *2 gdgdFaeries v1
-- (50) 22 *,439 **3,192 *2 Shakugan no Shana III -Final- v2

-- (*8) -- 1,932 1,932 1 Sphere Club v3

Horizon again. And nice to see a little more for Shana, inadequate as it may be.

Fall update:
Working'!! v4 adds 526 BDs, total 10,573.

Horizon v1 adds 487, total 24,605.

Shana III v2 adds 439 BDs, just barely making it in at 50th, total 4,240. Puts it 7% ahead of v1, but v1 didn't have a second week.

Summer update:
UtaPri v5 adds 631/954 DVDs, total 13,157.

Roukyuubu v5 gets a second week, adds 514, total 6,506

Past seasons:
AoEx v8 adds 455/679 DVDs, total 9,125.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Onegai Teacher BD Box adds 512, total 3,788. That puts it over the ¥100m mark, in 26th of 26 that have made that milestone, right behind Ookami to Koushinryou:

25) ¥*111.6m (*3,322 * ¥33,600) - Ookami to Koushinryou
26) ¥*111.4m (*3,788 * ¥29,400) - Onegai Teacher

Default Newtype Jan 2012 rankings

http://jbbs.livedoor.jp/bbs/read.cgi...1293278942/293

All of the following are third and fourth week additions.

Persona 4 v2 +1159 DVDs, total 31,354.

Steins v7 +663 BDs, total 14,374.

Working'!! v3 +268 BDs, total 11,051.

There's an Anime Power Ranking too, but it reports on nothing of interest.

Nice. I hope the sales stay at least consistent throughout the rest of the volumes.

Looks like it has been a full week at #1.

Which disappoints me personally. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised to see fanservice sell big even when it's (unlike Bake) not accompanied by a stellar story. I am happy that after episode 5 it looks like Miniskirt Pirates got a slight push in sales. If it can continue getting those pushes then hopefully it'll at least reach a break even point.

This tracks well with how hard a time Amazon.jp apparently had keeping the Horizon novels in stock.
Yaraon has a post up that you'd be interested in. Last August, the total amount of Horizon novels printed was 550,000 (or about 68,000 per novel). In January it was up to 1,000,000 printed (111,000 per novel), and now it's up over 1,200,000 printed (120,000 per novel). These numbers are from the publisher, so they're the amount that they've printed, but haven't sold yet.

Well of course Nisemonogatari is going to sell. It's more than what it's showing right now. I don't know what happens past what we've seen, but I do know bigger things are to come and this is just a risqué part of the series (well, more than usual). When Nisemonogatari is being sexy it does it well and people like sexy done well and you don't really get enough shows what do sexy or fetishism well.

Plus it shouldn't disappoint you as it's the sequel to the biggest selling anime in years and the adaptation of a hugely loved novel series. Of course it would sell. The story is going to do much more than it's letting on right now I feel. That and people adore the monogatari series.

Sex may be a part of why this series sells well, but it's got a great story and great characters too.

Nise's dialogue is every bit as well-written and fun as Bake's, and better in parts. That there's sexy fanservice going on during the talking is just a bonus. Also chalking the sales up to fanservice when it's a sequel to the show that sold 78k... really? Nise could lose half of Bake's sales and still basically double the sales of anything else this season. Anything other than huge sales was never possible.

But yes, about Mouretsu, it has been holding in the 80-110 range most of the time after coming down from its peak of 45, a damn sight better than every past episode that saw a brief spike to around ~120 at best before quickly dropping back to 200-400. It's climbed back to 75 right now, right before ep 6 airs. I'd love to see it peak higher than 45 this time, and stay just as strong.

From what I heard if they can animated Nisemonogatari they can animate the rest of the series no problem. Also Shinobu becoming part of the cast is a pretty big thing... I don't need to know the story to see that. And some stuff I do know.. well lets just say some "fluff" people are overlooking right now is stuff that will have some importance down the line. Having read a short point by point summary of the last novel released and than seeing something in an earlier episode.. I was like god damn Nisio you genius lol.
