I'm not convinced she's actually dead though. We've already seen that Swan Songs aren't always fatal. And she fell from a great height without showing us her corpse. That automatically cuts the odds of her actually being dead to less than 50%.

But if she actually did die, damn, she picked a pretty awesome way to go.

So Fine is an ancestor of Ryouko and essentially killed her and took over her body 12 years ago after Tsubasa awoke the thingy.

Oh, and she's awoken within many people over the ages. She also built the tower of Babel. And she's angry about the confusion God caused by making a bunch of language. Now I almost wonder if this show having the worst "English" in the history of anime is another joke.

My first thought was Ayashi no Ceres (Ceres: Celestial Legend). For some reason, Xenogears didn’t occur to me, and I’m ashamed of that. But Xenogears is much closer to what is actually going on. And since they already flat out admitted they stole the name of the tower-cannon from Wild Arms, another PS1 game, I think its safe to say that Xenogears is *exactly* where they got this from. Did I mention that I love this show?


However, when the soldier got stabbed and turned to soot in the beginning, I realized they probably got the idea for the Noise and what they do to people on contact from Xenosaga.

I think the "and all of mine are actually real!" one is actually funnier now that the its been confirmed in the show it was referencing.

And I'm glad to see I wasn't the only person that thought Kurisu was "heavily inspired" by Heavy Arms.

Hmmmm, you know how you said this show feels like a 90s OVA? Well, it occurs to me thats also where many of this show's "sources of inspiration" come from. Wild Arms, Xenogears, Heavy Arms.... all from the 90s. Though the whole thing with songs being used as a power source feel either older (Macross) or more modern (Ar Tonelico). Unless there's a 90s OVA that did something closer to what Symphogear does. Maybe that's why you mentioned Iczer-1? I never saw it, so I have no idea if it did something like this.

Andohbytheway, I just remembered something I forgot to include in my initial commentary. Remember that whole black berserker Hibiki thing, was kind of a big deal in the first 5 episodes and then we never really saw it after the Durandal incident? Yeah, I'm expecting that to make a comeback next time.

If you ever feel the need to watch a pretty decent 90s OVA, you can't go wrong with Iczer-1. Lesbians, tits, violence and robots. Its basically got everything. And unlike almost every other 90s OVA, its actually a complete story.

No songs though.

Macross 7 is the only show I can think of that really used songs as a form of combat. Unless there was some music battle OVA that was never licensed. But selling songs played over battles was big at the time. Bubblegum Crisis and all that. It is a wonderful extrapolation to have the characters in the fights singing the song and would be nice if this show came up with that on it's own.

Holy hell that was good. That ranks up there with some of the best super robot fight episodes ever. Big O vs Big Duo. Gundam ZZ vs Qubeley. Shin Getter vs Neo Getter. Nanoha vs Fate. Gurren Lagann vs Spiral King. Nanoha vs Vita. Master Gundam vs God Gundam. Gaiking the GREAT vs anyone.
