FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 11, 2011

Aniplex of America adds the Garden of sinners to PlayStation®Network via the PlayStation®Store

SANTA MONICA, CA (June 11, 2011) – Aniplex of America Inc. announced today that the Garden of sinners—a critically-lauded seven-chapter animated epic and Japan theatrical box office smash—is now available for rent on the PlayStation®Network’s video-on-demand service via the PlayStation®Store for download onto PlayStation®3 (PS3™) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems in both the United States and Canada.

Presented in its original 16:9 widescreen format in Japanese language with English subtitles, the Garden of sinners is the newest addition to a diverse stable of Aniplex-produced titles readily available through the PlayStation®Store, which also includes: Durarara!!, Gurren Lagann the Movie 1 & 2, R.O.D –THE TV-, Ghost Slayers Ayashi, and Toward the Terra.

Previously, the Garden of sinners had been imported and released by Aniplex of America as an 8-disc Blu-ray box set in North America, which immediately sold out. Subsequently, following strong demand and numerous requests from enthusiastic fans, Aniplex has made the following seven movie chapters available as VOD rentals in standard definition format through the PlayStation®Store’s video-on-demand section at $2.99 per title:

  • Chapter 1: Thanatos (Overlooking View)
  • Chapter 2: …and nothing heart (Murder Speculation, Part A)
  • Chapter 3: ever cry, never life (Remaining Sense of Pain)
  • Chapter 4: garan-no-dou (The Hollow Shrine)
  • Chapter 5: Paradox Paradigm
  • Chapter 6: Fairy Tale (Oblivion Recording)
  • Chapter 7: …not nothing heart (Murder Speculation, Part B)

That's interesting, but I'd still like an affordable home media release. I wonder if this move is any indication of the possibility of another release later (on DVD, for example).

Well at least now there's one way you can watch it legally. But I would still prefer a DVD/Blu-ray release.

Also $2.99 seems a little pricy for just a rental, considering that most of them are just 50 minutes long.

While I'm still hoping for a cheaper DVD/BD release somewhere down the line, at least I can actually watch them now for only about $21, a reasonable price considering how expensive the boxset was.

EDIT:
I just checked and it appears that only movies 1-4 and 6 are there right now. I guess movies 5 and 7 will be added later?

But I had quite alot of trouble looking them up. They're not the easiest things to find.

The distributor is listed as "ufotable" so they don't appear in the list of Aniplex stuff in the Anime section. Actually, I didn't see them anywhere in the Anime Movie section. I could only find them by searching for them directly or looking through the G's of the "Movies for Rent" or "View All Movies" sections. They weren't even listed in the "New Release Movies for Rent" section even though they were just added.

Well I'm not a fan of buying digital copies of media made available physically, renting, or paying for something in SD when it could have been bought in HD, but $21 looks a little more attractive than $600 (and I missed my chance for that anyway, not that I ever would have). I've never actually bought anything from PSN. Do these just download to the PS3 hard drive for a limited time then get deleted, or are they actually streamed? If it's the latter, my internet may not be able to handle it smoothly, even in SD. Also, is PSN all back to normal?

I've never watched a movie from the PSN either, but I highly doubt they're streamed. They most likely go to the hard drive.

And yes, the PSN is back to normal. Online play was restored 2 weeks ago, and the PSN store was brought back 1 week ago. Everything works fine now.

You download them to your hard drive. Once you download it you have a week to start watching it. From the time you start watching it you have 48 hours to finish it/watch it as many times as you like. Once those 48 hours expire (or the week, if you somehow forget to watch it) then the rental expires.

My biggest wonder is why it's 2.99 to rent. That's the normal price for an HD rental on the PSN, not an SD rental (which normally go for 1.99).

...in the US and Canada.

France has had them for ages (although only four episodes?) and Germany has had it for a while (both streaming and DTO, but only up to ep 5 thus far) and both countries are also releasing DVDs but no love at all in the UK other than imports of the BDs (which I had nothing like enough money for).

Has Garden of Sinners been removed from PSN? I tried renting it, but I can't seem to find it in the PSN store or Video Unlimited now.
