6-episode sci-fi show from Captain Harlock/Yamato/Galaxy Express 999 creator

Viki, a website that streams authorized videos with crowd-sourced translations, will release Leiji Matsumoto's Ozma television anime series worldwide as it airs in Japan. The six-episode science-fiction series is the first major new anime from creator Leiji Matsumoto (Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Space Battleship Yamato, Galaxy Express 999) in five years. The anime will premiere on Japan's premium WOWOW channel this Friday, March 16 at midnight, and Viki will stream the series 24 hours later outside Japan...

I read the title interested in a new site simulcasting anime, but crowd-sourced translations do not sound appealing. I'm sure I'll end up checking it out and seeing how they are at some point. I've been interested in this new Leiji Matsumoto anime anyway. I'd rather it be left to the professionals, but I guess this is better than nothing if that's not an option.

For getting multiple language versions out, a substantial amount of crowdsourcing of subtitles is probably the only viable alternative.

However, one thing about crowd sourced subtitles, even if the quality of the better versions is OK, is the uncertainty of when the better versions of the subtitles will be available.

The ideal middle ground may well be a professional translation into English for a time-certain simulcast, and a mechanism for members to contribute crowd-sourced subtitles to the site, with each submission having its own reaction page, complete with thumbs up, thumbs down, comments, blah blah blah ~ the whole community blog shtick.

Fate/Zero and Black Rock Shooter have been simulcast in a large number of multiple languages professionally, as well as some others like Time of Eve a while ago. It's probably not viable in this case, but it's not like it's never an option.

AFAIR, Fate/Zero was eight languages. Viki's approach could handle more than eight languages in each of Southeast Asia and Europe. Viki could stream to Africa in not only English, French, and Portuguese but also in kiSwahili, Lingala, and Xhosa. So "large number" there means "dozens".

Many simulcasts are already professional translated into English and French ~ if the distribution can afford two to eight professional translations, great. But to include Polish, Romanian, Greek, Thai, Malay, Tagalog, Tamil, Swahili, Lingala, Mongolian, and etc. and etc. ... the Viki system would make a great complement to professional translations for the most commercially lucrative markets.

And there's also this from the Black Rock Shooter thread:
Quote:
English: United States, Canada
French: France, Belgium, Monaco, Switzerland, Andorra
Italian: Italy
German: Germany
Spanish: Spain, Mexico, Chile, Argentina
Korean: South Korea
Traditional Chinese: Taiwan
Simplified Chinese: Mainland China, Singapore
Which is a "worldwide" consisting of 17 countries plus whoever else can get a video streaming capable VPN to pretend to be from one of those 17 countries ... as opposed to 200 countries for this.

Crunchyroll has also announced that it is streaming Ozma, with distribution outside of Asia.

And now that Crunchyroll has announced that they'll be simulcasting it as well, I know that I'll have a source for a proper English translation, so at least I know that this won't affect that, and that makes this all fine by me.
