What I'm assuming is an incredibly premature solicitation, Amazon has revealed that Vertical has licensed Nihei Tsutomu's Knights of Sidonia manga. "Huge" is a word that comes to mind when thinking about it.

Hell yeah. Day-1 purchase.

Hopefully this early solicitation doesn't cause any problems, as that is the last thing we need. Anyway, props to Ed Chavez and the team over at Vertical. Amazing job in picking up this manga.

Online retailer Amazon lists the first US$12.95 volume of Tsutomu Nihei's Knights of Sidonia manga for release on February 5, 2013 from North American publisher Vertical. Vertical has since confirmed its license.

The story takes place after humans flee Earth due to the devastating invasion of alien creatures called Gauna. Humans travel through space in giant ships while the Gauna continue to pursue them. As a new human culture develops, people fight the Gauna with Morito (Guardian) robotic mecha. A young man named Nagate Tanikaze trains as a Morito pilot aboard the spaceship Sidonia and defends its people from Gauna attacks.

Nihei launched the manga in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine in 2009. Kodansha will publish the eighth volume in Japan next month.

Nihei's other manga include Blame!, Biomega, and Abara. The creator launched a new Gundam manga series in Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Gundam Ace magazine on February 25. Tokyopop published Blame! in North America, while Viz Media released the Biomega manga. Blame! also inspired an original net anime series, which Media Blasters released in North America.

sounds like plenty to share this summer at AX and Otakon. We might even announce a Summer 2013 license by Otakon (seinen fantasy)

So that leaves 3 new, unannounced manga acquisitions for Vertical to fire off this year! A classic science-fiction manga, a josei and an alternative manga title. Then they also may announce some fantasy/seinen manga at Otakon? Excited? I sure am.

gonna start sampling many of the license suggestions this week. remember the window is open through June 28.

With Vertical missing out on the SDCC action, they'll be in full-force at Otakon next weekend.

With 3 new manga license announcements (possibly 4) and a new prose, this should be an eventful weekend for manga fans.
