I hope to God it's cheap, or at least a reasonable price. I have a suspicion that they're going to be including subtitles and trying to release it in the US, similar to Ufotable's Kara no Kyoukai BD-Box.
But hey, that's one more slot for another show to buy this season. Guilty Crown looks rad, maybe that can take Fate/Zero's place. |

I'd go farther than saying it seems risky. It seem to me to be a guarantee of them making less money. Every bit of evidence I've seen seems to indicate that boxsets sell less than singles, even if the boxset is cheaper than the total cost of the singles. It's great for me, if it's a lower price than singles, because all I care about is the total cost. I'd much rather spend $300 once than $400 spread out over 6 months. It seems like they're shooting themselves in the foot a bit. I'm sure it'll still sell very well, but I'm rather certain it'll be less than it could be.

There are some that went DVD singles with BD boxes (Mazinger Z-hen, Suite Precure will be doing it too) at roughly the same time but that's not a straight comparison either. Now yes, re-release boxsets almost always sell less than singles but any release done a year or more after the initial run ends can be expected to sell less. So we're in pretty uncharted territory here. I cannot think of another example where a guaranteed hit was released straight to boxset. In the past that's always been something you did for shows you knew nobody would buy (e.g. the Marvel anime, or Togainu no Chi, or Kaiji Hakairoku-hen). I'd be frickin' fascinated to find out their thought process here. It can't be purely the international aspect, because I can't think of any way in which the numbers work in their favor... I should also revise my cost comments a bit, in that although it's split cour they could be pricing it like a 2-cour anime i.e. 8-9 discs instead of 6*2. So if each box costs less than, ohhh let's say, ¥32,130 (¥7140 * 9 / 2), I don't see any way for them to come out ahead even if exactly the same number of people would buy a box as would buy the singles (on average).

What about Garden of Sinners? Are you convinced they would have made even more money on those BD if they were sold separately? This is clearly simplifying things, but do people really realize how much money was made on that show? I think ANN said they sold 25000 copies in the first week. 25k boxes times $400 = $10,000,000 sales! |

Though that was part of what I was saying, we really don't have anything remotely comparable to this. No guaranteed hit on this level or even close has ever been released straight to boxset before to my knowledge. Straight to boxset has been exclusively the release model you take for shows you know nobody will buy.

If Fate/zero does indeed get English subtitles and it sells well it might convince FUNimation to put out UBW. |
